Genesis 32

^[a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

ส่วนยาโคบก็ออกเดินทางต่อไปตามทางของตนด้วย แล้วเหล่าทูตของพระเจ้าก็มาพบเขา

When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim.^[b]

เมื่อยาโคบเห็นทูตเหล่านั้นจึงกล่าวว่า “นี่คือค่ายของพระเจ้า!” ดังนั้นเขาจึงเรียกสถานที่นั้นว่ามาหะนาอิม^[a]

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

ยาโคบส่งคนกลุ่มหนึ่งล่วงหน้าไปหาเอซาวพี่ชายของเขาที่เสอีร์ในดินแดนเอโดม

He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.

เขากำชับคนเหล่านั้นว่า “พวกท่านจงพูดกับเอซาวนายของข้าพเจ้าว่า ‘ยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่านกล่าวดังนี้ ข้าพเจ้าได้ไปหาลาบันและอยู่ที่นั่นจนถึงบัดนี้

I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’”

ข้าพเจ้ามีวัว ลา แกะ แพะ และคนรับใช้ชายหญิง บัดนี้ข้าพเจ้าส่งข่าวมายังนายของข้าพเจ้าเพื่อท่านจะกรุณาข้าพเจ้า’ ”

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

เมื่อคนเหล่านั้นกลับมาหายาโคบ พวกเขากล่าวว่า “เราได้ไปหาเอซาวพี่ชายของท่าน บัดนี้เขากำลังมาหาท่านพร้อมกับชายสี่ร้อยคน”

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,^[c] and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

ยาโคบหวาดวิตกยิ่งนัก เขาจึงแบ่งคนที่อยู่กับเขาออกเป็นสองกลุ่ม^[b] รวมทั้งฝูงแพะแกะ ฝูงวัว และอูฐด้วย

He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,^[d] the group^[e] that is left may escape.”

เขาคิดว่า “ถ้าเอซาวเข้ามาโจมตีกลุ่มหนึ่ง กลุ่มที่เหลือจะได้หนีไป”

Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’

แล้วยาโคบอธิษฐานว่า “ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของอับราฮัมและพระเจ้าของอิสอัคบิดาของข้าพระองค์ ข้าแต่พระยาห์เวห์องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้ได้ตรัสกับข้าพระองค์ว่า ‘จงกลับไปยังประเทศของเจ้าและญาติพี่น้องของเจ้า และเราจะทำให้เจ้าเจริญรุ่งเรือง’

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.

ข้าพระองค์ไม่คู่ควรเลยกับความกรุณาและความซื่อสัตย์ซึ่งทรงสำแดงแก่ผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ เมื่อข้าพระองค์ข้ามแม่น้ำจอร์แดนนี้ไป ข้าพระองค์มีเพียงไม้เท้าอันเดียวเท่านั้น แต่เดี๋ยวนี้ข้าพระองค์มั่งคั่งจนแบ่งทรัพย์สินผู้คนได้เป็นสองค่าย

Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.

โปรดช่วยข้าพระองค์ด้วย ข้าพระองค์อธิษฐานขอให้ข้าพระองค์รอดพ้นจากเงื้อมมือของเอซาวพี่ชายของข้าพระองค์ เพราะข้าพระองค์กลัวว่าเขาจะมาโจมตีข้าพระองค์และลูกๆ รวมทั้งบรรดาแม่ของเด็กเหล่านั้น

But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

แต่พระองค์ได้ตรัสว่า ‘เราจะทำให้เจ้าเจริญรุ่งเรืองอย่างแน่นอน และจะทำให้ลูกหลานของเจ้ามากมายเหมือนเม็ดทรายที่ชายทะเลซึ่งไม่อาจนับได้’ ”

He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:

เขาพักแรมที่นั่นและเลือกของกำนัลให้เอซาวพี่ชายของเขาจากสิ่งที่เขามีอยู่คือ

two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

แพะตัวเมียสองร้อยตัว แพะตัวผู้ยี่สิบตัว แกะตัวเมียสองร้อยตัว แกะตัวผู้ยี่สิบตัว

thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

แม่อูฐสามสิบตัวกับลูกของมัน วัวตัวเมียสี่สิบตัว วัวตัวผู้สิบตัว ลาตัวเมียยี่สิบตัว ลาตัวผู้สิบตัว

He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”

เขามอบสัตว์เหล่านี้ให้บรรดาคนรับใช้ดูแลโดยแยกแต่ละฝูงออกจากกัน และกล่าวกับคนรับใช้ว่า “จงล่วงหน้าเราไปและรักษาระยะห่างระหว่างฝูงสัตว์ไว้”

He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’

เขาสั่งคนที่นำฝูงสัตว์ไปเป็นกลุ่มแรกสุดว่า “เมื่อเอซาวพี่ชายของเรามาพบเจ้าและถามว่า ‘พวกเจ้าเป็นคนของใคร กำลังจะไปที่ไหน และใครเป็นเจ้าของสัตว์ทั้งหมดที่อยู่ข้างหน้าเจ้า?’

then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”

ก็ให้เจ้าตอบว่า ‘สัตว์เหล่านี้เป็นของยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่าน ส่งมาเป็นของกำนัลแก่เอซาวนายของข้าพเจ้า และยาโคบกำลังตามมาข้างหลัง’ ”

He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

ยาโคบสั่งคนต้อนฝูงสัตว์คนที่สอง ที่สาม และคนอื่นๆ ทุกกลุ่มว่า “พวกเจ้าต้องพูดอย่างเดียวกันนี้กับเอซาวเมื่อพบเขา

And be sure to say, ‘Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”

และพวกเจ้าอย่าลืมพูดว่า ‘ยาโคบผู้รับใช้ของท่านกำลังตามมาข้างหลังเรา’ ” เพราะยาโคบคิดว่า “เราจะทำให้เขาหายโกรธด้วยของกำนัลเหล่านี้ที่ส่งไปล่วงหน้า ภายหลังเมื่อเราพบหน้าเขา บางทีเขาอาจจะยอมรับเรา”

So Jacob’s gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

ดังนั้นยาโคบจึงส่งของกำนัลไปล่วงหน้า ส่วนตัวเขาเองค้างแรมอยู่ในค่าย

ยาโคบปล้ำสู้กับพระเจ้า

That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

คืนนั้นยาโคบลุกขึ้นพาภรรยาทั้งสอง เมียทาสทั้งสอง และลูกชายสิบเอ็ดคน ข้ามลำน้ำยับบอกตรงบริเวณสันดอน

After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.

หลังจากส่งพวกเขาข้ามลำน้ำไปแล้ว ก็ส่งทรัพย์สมบัติทั้งหมดข้ามตามไป

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

ดังนั้นจึงเหลือยาโคบอยู่แต่ลำพัง และมีบุรุษผู้หนึ่งมาปล้ำสู้กับเขาจนรุ่งสาง

When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

เมื่อบุรุษนั้นเห็นว่าไม่สามารถเอาชนะเขาได้ จึงแตะ^[c]ที่เบ้าข้อต่อสะโพกของยาโคบขณะที่ปล้ำสู้กัน ทำให้สะโพกเคล็ด

Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

แล้วบุรุษนั้นก็พูดว่า “ปล่อยเราไปเถิด ฟ้าสางแล้ว”

แต่ยาโคบตอบว่า “ข้าพเจ้าจะไม่ปล่อยจนกว่าท่านจะอวยพรข้าพเจ้า”

The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

บุรุษนั้นถามเขาว่า “เจ้าชื่ออะไร?”

เขาตอบว่า “ยาโคบ”

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[f] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

แล้วบุรุษนั้นจึงกล่าวว่า “เจ้าจะไม่ชื่อว่ายาโคบอีก แต่จะชื่อว่าอิสราเอล^[d] เพราะเจ้าสู้กับพระเจ้าและสู้กับมนุษย์แล้วเจ้าก็ชนะ”

Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

ยาโคบพูดว่า “โปรดบอกชื่อของท่านให้ข้าพเจ้าทราบ”

แต่บุรุษนั้นตอบว่า “เจ้าถามชื่อเราทำไม? เจ้าไม่รู้หรือว่าเราคือใคร?” แล้วอวยพรเขาที่นั่น

So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

ดังนั้นยาโคบจึงเรียกที่แห่งนั้นว่าเปนีเอล^[e] โดยกล่าวว่า “เราได้เห็นพระเจ้าต่อหน้าต่อตา กระนั้นพระองค์ยังทรงไว้ชีวิตเรา”

The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,^[h] and he was limping because of his hip.

ขณะที่ยาโคบเดินทางผ่านเปนีเอล^[f] ดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นแล้ว เขาเดินโขยกเขยกเพราะยังเจ็บสะโพกอยู่

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

ฉะนั้นชาวอิสราเอลจึงไม่กินเอ็นที่ติดกับเบ้าข้อต่อสะโพกจนกระทั่งทุกวันนี้ เพราะพระเจ้าได้ทรงแตะต้องเบ้าข้อต่อสะโพกบริเวณใกล้เส้นเอ็นของยาโคบ
