Genesis 24

Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.

Abraham estaba ya entrado en años, y el Señor lo había bendecido en todo.

He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh.

Un día, Abraham le dijo al criado más antiguo de su casa, que era quien le administraba todos sus bienes:

—Pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo,

I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,

y júrame por el Señor, el Dios del cielo y de la tierra, que no tomarás de esta tierra de Canaán, donde yo habito, una mujer para mi hijo

but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”

Isaac, sino que irás a mi tierra, donde vive mi familia, y de allí le escogerás una esposa.

The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?”

—¿Qué pasa si la mujer no está dispuesta a venir conmigo a esta tierra? —respondió el criado—. ¿Debo entonces llevar a su hijo hasta la tierra de donde usted vino?

“Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said.

—¡De ninguna manera debes llevar a mi hijo hasta allá! —le replicó Abraham—.

“The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring^[a] I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.

El Señor, el Dios del cielo, que me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mis familiares, y que bajo juramento me prometió dar esta tierra a mis descendientes, enviará su ángel delante de ti para que puedas traer de allá una mujer para mi hijo.

If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”

Si la mujer no está dispuesta a venir contigo, quedarás libre de este juramento; pero ¡en ningún caso llevarás a mi hijo hasta allá!

So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

El criado puso la mano debajo del muslo de Abraham, su amo, y le juró que cumpliría con su encargo.

Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim^[b] and made his way to the town of Nahor.

Luego tomó diez camellos de su amo, y toda clase de regalos, y partió hacia la ciudad de Najor en Aram Najarayin.^[a]

He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

Allí hizo que los camellos se arrodillaran junto al pozo de agua que estaba en las afueras de la ciudad. Caía la tarde, que es cuando las mujeres salen a buscar agua.

Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

Entonces comenzó a orar: «Señor, Dios de mi amo Abraham, te ruego que hoy me vaya bien, y que demuestres el amor que le tienes a mi amo.

See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.

Aquí me tienes, a la espera junto a la fuente, mientras las jóvenes de esta ciudad vienen a sacar agua.

May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

Permite que la joven a quien le diga: “Por favor, baje usted su cántaro para que tome yo un poco de agua”, y que me conteste: “Tome usted, y además les daré agua a sus camellos”, sea la que tú has elegido para tu siervo Isaac. Así estaré seguro de que tú has demostrado el amor que le tienes a mi amo».

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.

Aún no había terminado de orar cuando vio que se acercaba Rebeca, con su cántaro al hombro. Rebeca era hija de Betuel, que a su vez era hijo de Milca y Najor, el hermano de Abraham.

The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

La joven era muy hermosa, y además virgen, pues no había tenido relaciones sexuales con ningún hombre. Bajó hacia la fuente y llenó su cántaro. Ya se preparaba para subir

The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”

cuando el criado corrió a su encuentro y le dijo:

—¿Podría usted darme un poco de agua de su cántaro?

“Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

—Sírvase, mi señor —le respondió.

Y en seguida bajó el cántaro y, sosteniéndolo entre sus manos, le dio de beber.

After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.”

Cuando ya el criado había bebido, ella le dijo:

—Voy también a sacar agua para que sus camellos beban todo lo que quieran.

So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.

De inmediato vació su cántaro en el bebedero, y volvió corriendo al pozo para buscar más agua, repitiendo la acción hasta que hubo suficiente agua para todos los camellos.

Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.

Mientras tanto, el criado de Abraham la observaba en silencio, para ver si el Señor había coronado su viaje con éxito.

When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka^[c] and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.^[d]

Cuando los camellos terminaron de beber, el criado tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba seis gramos, y se lo puso a la joven en la nariz;^[b] también le colocó en los brazos dos pulseras de oro que pesaban más de cien gramos,^[c] y le preguntó:

Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”

—¿Podría usted decirme de quién es hija, y si habrá lugar en la casa de su padre para hospedarnos?

She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.”

—Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Milca y Najor —respondió ella,

And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.”

a lo que agregó—: No solo tenemos lugar para ustedes, sino que también tenemos paja y forraje en abundancia para los camellos.

Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,

Entonces el criado de Abraham se arrodilló y adoró al Señor

saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”

con estas palabras: «Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abraham, que no ha dejado de manifestarle su amor y fidelidad, y que a mí me ha guiado a la casa de sus parientes».

The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.

La joven corrió hasta la casa de su madre, y allí contó lo que le había sucedido.

Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring.

Tenía Rebeca un hermano llamado Labán, que salió corriendo al encuentro del criado, quien seguía junto a la fuente.

As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring.

Labán se había fijado en el anillo y las pulseras en los brazos de su hermana, y también la había escuchado contar lo que el criado le había dicho. Por eso salió en busca del criado, y lo encontró junto a la fuente, con sus camellos.

“Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,” he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”

—¡Ven, bendito del Señor! —le dijo—. ¿Por qué te quedas afuera? ¡Ya he preparado la casa y un lugar para los camellos!

So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.

El criado entró en la casa. En seguida Labán desaparejó los camellos, les dio paja y forraje, y llevó agua para que el criado y sus acompañantes se lavaran los pies.

Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”

“Then tell us,” Laban said.

Cuando le sirvieron de comer, el criado dijo:

—No comeré hasta haberles dicho lo que tengo que decir.

—Habla con toda confianza —respondió Labán.

So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

—Yo soy criado de Abraham —comenzó él—.

The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

El Señor ha bendecido mucho a mi amo y lo ha prosperado. Le ha dado ovejas y ganado, oro y plata, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos.

My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns.

Sara, la esposa de mi amo, le dio en su vejez un hijo, al que mi amo le ha dejado todo lo que tiene.

And my master made me swear an oath, and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,

Mi amo me hizo jurar, y me dijo: “No tomarás para mi hijo una mujer de entre las hijas de los cananeos, en cuyo país habito.

but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’

Al contrario, irás a la familia de mi padre, y le buscarás una esposa entre las mujeres de mis parientes”.

“Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’

Yo le pregunté a mi amo: “¿Y si la mujer no acepta venir conmigo?”

“He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.

Él me respondió: “El Señor, en cuya presencia he caminado, enviará su ángel contigo, y él hará prosperar tu viaje para que consigas para mi hijo una esposa que pertenezca a la familia de mi padre.

You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’

Solo quedarás libre del juramento si vas a ver a mi familia y ellos no te conceden a la joven”.

“When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come.

»Cuando hoy llegué a la fuente, dije: “Señor, Dios de mi amo Abraham, si es tu voluntad, te ruego que hagas prosperar mi viaje.

See, I am standing beside this spring. If a young woman comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”

Aquí me tienes, a la espera junto a la fuente. Si una joven sale a buscar agua, y yo le digo: ‘Por favor, déjeme usted beber un poco de agua de su cántaro’,

and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’

y ella me contesta: ‘Beba usted, y también les daré agua a sus camellos’, que sea ella la mujer que tú, Señor, has escogido para el hijo de mi amo”.

“Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’

»Todavía no había terminado yo de orar cuando vi que Rebeca se acercaba con un cántaro sobre el hombro. Bajó a la fuente para sacar agua, y yo le dije: “Por favor, deme usted de beber”.

“She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels also.

En seguida bajó ella su cántaro y me dijo: “Beba usted, y también les daré de beber a sus camellos”. Mientras yo bebía, ella les dio agua a los camellos.

“I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’

“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’

“Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms,

Luego le pregunté: “¿Hija de quién es usted?” Y, cuando ella me respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Najor y de Milca”, yo le puse un anillo en la nariz y pulseras en los brazos,

and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.

y me incliné para adorar al Señor. Bendije al Señor, el Dios de Abraham, que me guió por el camino correcto para llevarle al hijo de mi amo una parienta cercana suya.

Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

Y ahora, si desean mostrarle lealtad y fidelidad a mi amo, díganmelo; y, si no, díganmelo también. Así yo sabré qué hacer».

Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.

Labán y Betuel respondieron:

—Sin duda todo esto proviene del Señor, y nosotros no podemos decir ni que sí ni que no.

Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.”

Aquí está Rebeca; tómela usted y llévesela para que sea la esposa del hijo de su amo, tal como el Señor lo ha dispuesto.

When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.

Al escuchar esto, el criado de Abraham se postró en tierra delante del Señor.

Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother.

Luego sacó joyas de oro y de plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También entregó regalos a su hermano y a su madre.

Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.

When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”

Más tarde, él y sus acompañantes comieron y bebieron, y pasaron allí la noche.

A la mañana siguiente, cuando se levantaron, el criado de Abraham dijo:

—Déjenme ir a la casa de mi amo.

But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you^[e] may go.”

Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca le respondieron:

—Que se quede la joven con nosotros unos diez días, y luego podrás irte.

But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.”

—No me detengan —repuso el criado—. El Señor ha prosperado mi viaje, así que déjenme ir a la casa de mi amo.

Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”

—Llamemos a la joven, a ver qué piensa ella —respondieron.

So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,” she said.

Así que llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron:

—¿Quieres irte con este hombre?

—Sí —respondió ella.

So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.

Entonces dejaron ir a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza con el criado de Abraham y sus acompañantes.

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,

Y bendijeron a Rebeca con estas palabras:

Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

Luego Rebeca y sus criadas se prepararon, montaron en los camellos y siguieron al criado de Abraham. Así fue como él tomó a Rebeca y se marchó de allí.

Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.

Ahora bien, Isaac había vuelto del pozo de Lajay Roí, porque vivía en la región del Néguev.

He went out to the field one evening to meditate,^[f] and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.

Una tarde, salió a dar un paseo^[d] por el campo. De pronto, al levantar la vista, vio que se acercaban unos camellos.

Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel

También Rebeca levantó la vista y, al ver a Isaac, se bajó del camello

and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.

y le preguntó al criado:

—¿Quién es ese hombre que viene por el campo a nuestro encuentro?

—Es mi amo —contestó el criado.

Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió.

Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.

El criado le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho.

Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Luego Isaac llevó a Rebeca a la carpa de Sara, su madre, y la tomó por esposa. Isaac amó a Rebeca, y así se consoló de la muerte de su madre.
