Genesis 48

Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.

When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Când lui Iacov i s-a spus: „Fiul tău Iosif a venit la tine“, el şi-a adunat puterile şi a şezut pe pat.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me

Iacov i-a zis lui Iosif:

– Dumnezeul cel Atotputernic^[a] mi S-a arătat la Luz, în Canaan, m-a binecuvântat

and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’

şi mi-a zis: „Te voi face roditor şi te voi înmulţi; te voi face o adunare de popoare şi voi da această ţară urmaşilor tăi după tine ca pe o proprietate veşnică.“

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

De aceea cei doi fii ai tăi, care ţi s-au născut în ţara Egiptului, vor fi ai mei; Efraim şi Manase vor fi ai mei aşa cum sunt Ruben şi Simeon.

Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.

Urmaşii care ţi s-au născut după ei vor fi ai tăi. În teritoriul pe care îl vor moşteni, ei vor fi numiţi după numele fraţilor lor.

As I was returning from Paddan,^[b] to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).

După ce m-am întors din Padan^[b], Rahela a murit pe drum, în Canaan, înainte de a ajunge la Efrata; am îngropat-o acolo, pe drumul spre Efrata, adică Betleem.

When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, “Who are these?”

Când Israel i-a văzut pe fiii lui Iosif, a întrebat:

– Cine sunt aceştia?

“They are the sons God has given me here,” Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.”

– Sunt fiii pe care Dumnezeu mi i-a dat aici, a răspuns Iosif.

– Adu-i la mine să-i binecuvântez, a zis el.

Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.

Vederea lui Israel slăbise din cauza bătrâneţii, astfel că nu mai vedea bine. Iosif i-a apropiat pe cei doi fii ai săi de el, iar Israel i-a sărutat şi i-a îmbrăţişat.

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”

Apoi i-a zis lui Iosif:

– Nu mi-am închipuit c-o să te mai văd, dar Dumnezeu m-a ajutat să-ţi văd şi copiii.

Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Iosif i-a îndepărtat de lângă genunchii tatălui său^[c] şi s-a plecat cu faţa până la pământ.

And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him.

Apoi i-a luat pe amândoi, pe Efraim la dreapta sa şi la stânga lui Israel, iar pe Manase la stânga sa şi la dreapta lui Israel şi i-a apropiat de el.

But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

Dar Israel, încrucişându-şi mâinile, şi-a întins mâna dreaptă şi a pus-o pe capul lui Efraim, care era mai mic, iar mâna stângă a pus-o pe capul lui Manase, deşi el era întâiul născut.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,

When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.

Când Iosif a văzut că tatăl său şi-a pus mâna dreaptă pe capul lui Efraim, nu i-a plăcut şi a luat mâna tatălui său ca să o mute de pe capul lui Efraim pe capul lui Manase.

Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

El i-a zis tatălui său:

– Nu aşa, tată! Acesta este întâiul născut; pe capul lui pune-ţi mâna dreaptă.

But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.”

Dar tatăl său a refuzat şi a răspuns:

– Ştiu, fiule, ştiu; şi el va ajunge un popor, şi el va fi mare. Totuşi fratele său mai mic va fi mai mare decât el, iar urmaşii lui vor ajunge o mulţime de neamuri.

He blessed them that day and said,

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

Israel i-a binecuvântat în ziua aceea, zicând:

Astfel, el l-a pus pe Efraim înaintea lui Manase.

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you^[d] and take you^[e] back to the land of your^[f] fathers.

Apoi Israel i-a zis lui Iosif:

– Eu voi muri, dar Dumnezeu va fi cu voi şi vă va întoarce în ţara strămoşilor voştri.

And to you I give one more ridge of land^[g] than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.”

Ţie, care eşti deasupra fraţilor tăi, îţi dau Şehemul^[d] pe care l-am luat cu sabia şi cu arcul meu din mâna amoriţilor.
