Genesis 47

Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.”

Iosif s-a dus şi i-a spus lui Faraon că tatăl său şi fraţii săi au venit din Canaan cu turmele, cirezile şi cu tot ceea ce au şi că se află în Goşen^[a].

He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.

Iosif i-a luat pe cinci dintre fraţii săi şi i-a dus la Faraon.

Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”

“Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.”

Faraon i-a întrebat:

– Cu ce vă ocupaţi?

– Slujitorii tăi sunt păstori, aşa cum au fost şi strămoşii noştri, au răspuns ei.

They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”

Am venit să locuim ca străini în ţară, pentru că foametea este grea în Canaan şi nu mai este păşune pentru turmele slujitorilor tăi. Permite-le deci slujitorilor tăi să locuiască în Goşen.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you,

Atunci Faraon i-a zis lui Iosif:

– Tatăl tău şi fraţii tăi au venit la tine.

and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.”

Ţara Egiptului este înaintea ta. Aşază-i pe tatăl tău şi pe fraţii tăi în cea mai bună parte a ţării. Să locuiască în Goşen. Iar dacă tu ştii că între ei sunt oameni pricepuţi, pune-i responsabili peste turmele mele.

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed^[a] Pharaoh,

Iosif l-a adus pe tatăl său, Iacov, l-a prezentat lui Faraon, iar Iacov l-a binecuvântat^[b] pe Faraon.

Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”

Faraon l-a întrebat pe Iacov:

– Câţi ani ai?

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.”

– Anii călătoriei mele sunt o sută treizeci, a răspuns Iacov. Anii vieţii mele au fost puţini şi grei. Ei n-au ajuns anii vieţii strămoşilor mei în timpul călătoriei lor.

Then Jacob blessed^[b] Pharaoh and went out from his presence.

Apoi Iacov l-a binecuvântat pe Faraon şi a plecat de la el.

So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.

Iosif i-a aşezat pe tatăl său şi pe fraţii săi în ţara Egiptului şi le-a dat o moşie în cea mai bună parte a ţării, în ţinutul Ramses^[c], aşa cum poruncise Faraon.

Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.

Joseph and the Famine

Iosif s-a îngrijit de hrana tatălui său, a fraţilor săi şi a întregii familii a tatălui său, după numărul copiilor lor.

Iosif şi foametea din Egipt

There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.

În toată ţara nu mai era hrană, pentru că foametea era foarte grea. Ţara Egiptului şi ţara Canaanului lâncezeau din cauza foametei.

Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.

Iosif a adunat tot argintul care se găsea în ţara Egiptului şi în ţara Canaanului, ca plată pentru grânele cumpărate de oameni, şi l-a adus în vistieria lui Faraon.

When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.”

Când s-a terminat argintul din ţara Egiptului şi din Canaan, toţi egiptenii au venit la Iosif şi i-au zis:

– Dă-ne pâine! De ce să murim înaintea ta din cauză că nu mai avem argint?

“Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.”

Iosif a răspuns:

– Dacă nu mai aveţi argint, daţi-mi turmele voastre şi vă voi da pâine în schimbul lor.

So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

Ei şi-au adus turmele la Iosif, iar Iosif le-a dat pâine în schimbul cailor, turmelor de oi, cirezilor de vite şi măgarilor. În acel an i-a hrănit cu pâine în schimbul tuturor turmelor lor.

When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.

Când s-a terminat acel an, ei au venit la el în anul următor şi i-au zis: „Nu putem ascunde de stăpânul nostru că nu mai avem argint şi că cirezile de vite sunt ale stăpânului nostru. Nu ne-a mai rămas nimic pentru stăpânul nostru decât trupurile şi pământurile noastre.

Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”

De ce să murim noi şi pământurile noastre înaintea ta? Cumpără-ne pe noi şi pământurile noastre în schimbul hranei, iar noi şi pământurile noastre vom deveni slujitorii lui Faraon. Dă-ne sămânţă ca să trăim şi să nu murim, iar ţara să nu rămână pustie.“

So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s,

Astfel, Iosif a cumpărat toate pământurile din Egipt pentru Faraon. Toţi egiptenii şi-au vândut pământurile, deoarece foametea era prea grea pentru ei; şi ţara a ajuns a lui Faraon.

and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,^[c] from one end of Egypt to the other.

După aceea, a mutat în cetăţi poporul^[d] de la o margine a Egiptului până la cealaltă.

However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

Totuşi el n-a cumpărat pământurile preoţilor, pentru că preoţii aveau venit dat de Faraon şi trăiau din venitul pe care li-l dădea Faraon; de aceea ei nu şi-au vândut pământurile.

Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground.

Apoi Iosif a zis poporului:

– Pentru că astăzi v-am cumpărat împreună cu pământurile voastre pentru Faraon, vă dau sămânţă să semănaţi pământul,

But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”

dar la seceriş va trebui să-i daţi a cincea parte lui Faraon. Celelalte patru părţi vor fi ale voastre ca sămânţă pentru ogor şi ca hrană pentru voi, pentru familiile voastre şi pentru copiii voştri.

“You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”

Ei au răspuns:

– Tu ne-ai salvat vieţile; să găsim bunăvoinţă la stăpânul nostru şi vom fi slujitorii lui Faraon.

So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.

Astfel, Iosif a făcut o lege pentru Egipt, care a rămas valabilă până în ziua de azi, potrivit căreia a cincea parte este a lui Faraon. Doar pământurile preoţilor nu au ajuns ale lui Faraon.

Ultimele zile ale lui Iacov

Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.

Israeliţii s-au aşezat în ţara Egiptului, în ţinutul Goşen; ei au dobândit proprietăţi acolo, au fost roditori şi s-au înmulţit foarte mult.

Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.

Iacov a trăit în ţara Egiptului şaptesprezece ani; anii vieţii sale au fost o sută patruzeci şi şapte.

When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,

Cu puţin înainte să moară, Iacov l-a chemat pe fiul său Iosif şi i-a zis:

– Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine, pune-ţi mâna sub coapsa mea şi poartă-te cu mine cu bunătate şi credincioşie. Nu mă îngropa în Egipt,

but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”

“I will do as you say,” he said.

ci, atunci când voi muri, du-mă din Egipt şi îngroapă-mă în mormântul strămoşilor mei.

– Voi face aşa cum ai zis, a răspuns el.

“Swear to me,” he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.^[d]

– Jură-mi, i-a cerut Iacov.

Iosif i-a jurat. Apoi Israel s-a închinat pe căpătâiul patului său^[e].
