Genesis 44

Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.

După aceea, Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Umple sacii acestor oameni cu mâncare, atât cât pot duce şi pune argintul fiecăruia la gura sacului său.

Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.

Pune cupa mea de argint la gura sacului celui mai mic, împreună cu argintul pentru grâne.“ Administratorul a făcut aşa cum i-a poruncit Iosif.

As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.

Cum s-a făcut dimineaţă, oamenii au fost trimişi cu măgarii lor.

They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?

Ei au ieşit din cetate, dar n-au ajuns prea departe, când Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Scoală-te, urmăreşte-i pe acei oameni, iar când îi vei ajunge, întreabă-i: «De ce aţi răsplătit binele cu rău?

Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’”

Nu este aceasta cupa din care bea stăpânul meu şi pe care o foloseşte el pentru ghicire^[a]? Rău lucru aţi făcut.»“

When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them.

Când i-a ajuns, administratorul le-a spus aceste cuvinte.

But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!

– De ce spune stăpânul nostru aceste cuvinte? i-au răspuns ei. Nici gând ca slujitorii tăi să fi făcut acest lucru!

We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?

Noi ţi-am adus înapoi din Canaan argintul pe care-l găsisem la gura sacilor noştri; cum să fi furat argint sau aur din palatul stăpânului tău?

If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”

Fie ca acela dintre slujitorii tăi, la care va fi găsită cupa, să moară, iar noi ceilalţi să devenim sclavii stăpânului nostru.

“Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.”

– Fie aşa cum aţi spus, le-a zis el; cel la care va fi găsită cupa va fi sclavul meu, dar voi ceilalţi veţi fi consideraţi nevinovaţi.

Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.

Fiecare şi-a dat repede jos sacul şi l-a deschis.

Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

El a căutat cupa începând cu cel mai mare şi terminând cu cel mai mic, iar aceasta a fost găsită în sacul lui Beniamin.

At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.

Atunci ei şi-au sfâşiat hainele, fiecare şi-a încărcat măgarul şi s-au întors în cetate.

Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.

Iuda şi fraţii săi au intrat în palatul lui Iosif, pe când el era încă acolo şi s-au plecat la pământ înaintea lui.

Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”

Iosif i-a întrebat:

– Ce înseamnă lucrul acesta pe care l-aţi făcut? Nu ştiţi că un om ca mine poate ghici?

“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.”

Iuda i-a răspuns:

– Ce putem să-i spunem stăpânului nostru? Ce putem spune? Cum să ne dezvinovăţim? Dumnezeu a descoperit vina slujitorilor tăi; suntem sclavii stăpânului nostru, noi şi cel la care a fost găsită cupa.

But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”

Dar el a zis:

– Nici gând să fac acest lucru! Doar cel la care a fost găsită cupa va fi sclavul meu, iar voi ceilalţi mergeţi în pace la tatăl vostru.

Then Judah went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.

Atunci Iuda s-a apropiat de el şi i-a zis:

– Stăpânul meu, te rog, dă-i voie slujitorului tău să-i spună ceva stăpânului meu şi să nu te mânii pe slujitorul tău, pentru că tu eşti ca Faraon.

My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’

Stăpânul meu i-a întrebat pe slujitorii săi, dacă avem tată şi dacă mai avem vreun alt frate.

And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’

Noi i-am răspuns stăpânului nostru că avem un tată în vârstă, care mai are un fiu mai tânăr ce i s-a născut la bătrâneţe. Fratele său este mort, doar el a mai rămas dintre copiii mamei sale, iar tatăl său îl iubeşte.

“Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’

Atunci tu le-ai cerut slujitorilor tăi să-l aducă la tine ca să-l vezi cu ochii tăi.

And we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’

Noi i-am spus stăpânului nostru că băiatul nu poate pleca de lângă tatăl său, pentru că, dacă ar pleca, tatăl său ar muri.

But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’

Dar tu le-ai spus slujitorilor tăi: „Dacă fratele nostru mai mic nu vine cu voi, nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa“.

When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

Când ne-am întors la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, i-am făcut cunoscute cuvintele stăpânului nostru.

“Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’

Când tatăl nostru ne-a cerut să ne întoarcem şi să mai cumpărăm nişte mâncare,

But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’

noi i-am răspuns: „Nu putem merge decât dacă va veni cu noi şi fratele nostru mai mic, pentru că nu putem să vedem faţa acelui om decât dacă fratele nostru mai mic este cu noi“.

“Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.

Atunci slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, ne-a amintit ceea ce ştiam, şi anume că soţia sa i-a născut doi fii,

One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.

dintre care unul a plecat şi se crede că a fost sfâşiat de fiare, pentru că nu a mai fost văzut de atunci

If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’

şi că, dacă i l-am lua şi pe acesta şi i se va întâmpla vreo nenorocire, cu durere îi vom coborî capul încărunţit în Locuinţa Morţilor.

“So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,

De aceea, dacă mă voi întoarce la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, şi băiatul nu va fi cu noi, pentru că el este ataşat de băiat,

sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.

va muri când va vedea că băiatul nu este cu noi; iar slujitorii tăi vor coborî cu durere capul încărunţit al slujitorului tău, tatăl nostru, în Locuinţa Morţilor.

Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’

Slujitorul tău s-a pus garant la tatăl meu pentru băiat, promiţând că dacă nu i-l voi aduce înapoi, voi fi vinovat înaintea tatălui meu toată viaţa.

“Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.

Astfel dar dă-i voie, te rog, slujitorului tău să rămână ca sclav al stăpânului meu în locul băiatului şi dă-i voie băiatului să se întoarcă cu fraţii săi.

How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.”

Cum să mă întorc la tatăl meu dacă băiatul nu este cu mine? Să nu văd durerea care va veni asupra tatălui meu!
