Genesis 43

Now the famine was still severe in the land.

Foametea era grea în ţară.

So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”

Când au terminat de mâncat grânele pe care le aduseseră din Egipt, tatăl lor le-a zis:

– Duceţi-vă din nou şi cumpăraţi-ne puţină mâncare.

But Judah said to him, “The man warned us solemnly, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’

Dar Iuda i-a răspuns:

– Omul acela ne-a avertizat clar, spunându-ne: „Nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa decât dacă fratele vostru va fi cu voi”.

If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

Dacă-l vei trimite pe fratele nostru cu noi, ne vom duce şi-ţi vom cumpăra mâncare.

But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”

Dar dacă nu-l vei trimite, nu ne vom duce, pentru că acel om ne-a zis: „Nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa decât dacă fratele vostru va fi cu voi.”

Israel asked, “Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?”

Atunci Israel le-a zis:

– De ce v-aţi purtat aşa de rău cu mine şi i-aţi spus acelui om că mai aveţi un frate?

They replied, “The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. ‘Is your father still living?’ he asked us. ‘Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

Ei i-au răspuns:

– Omul acela ne-a pus întrebări amănunţite în legătură cu noi şi cu familia noastră, zicând: „Mai trăieşte tatăl vostru? Mai aveţi vreun frate?” Noi i-am răspuns la aceste întrebări. De unde era să ştim că ne va cere să-l aducem pe fratele nostru?

Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.

Atunci Iuda i-a zis tatălui său, Israel:

– Trimite băiatul cu mine; vom pleca imediat, pentru ca noi, tu şi copiii noştri să trăim şi să nu murim.

I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.

Eu însumi voi răspunde pentru el; din mâna mea îl vei cere. Dacă nu ţi-l voi aduce înapoi şi dacă nu-l voi pune înaintea ta, voi fi vinovat înaintea ta toată viaţa.

As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.”

Dacă n-am fi întârziat, cu siguranţă că ne-am fi întors de două ori până acum.

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds.

Atunci, tatăl lor, Israel, le-a zis:

– Dacă aşa trebuie, atunci aşa să faceţi. Luaţi cu voi câteva dintre cele mai alese produse ale ţării şi duceţi-le ca dar acelui om: puţin balsam, puţină miere, condimente, smirnă, fistic şi migdale.

Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.

Luaţi de două ori mai mult argint, pentru că trebuie să daţi înapoi argintul care a fost pus la gura sacilor voştri. Poate a fost o greşeală.

Take your brother also and go back to the man at once.

Luaţi-l şi pe fratele vostru şi mergeţi din nou la omul acela.

And may God Almighty^[a] grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

Dumnezeul cel Atotputernic^[a] să vă dea milă înaintea acelui om, pentru ca el să-i trimită înapoi pe celălalt frate al vostru şi pe Beniamin. Cât despre mine, dacă trebuie să fiu lipsit de copii, atunci lipsit să fiu.

So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.

Oamenii au luat cu ei darul, argintul – de două ori mai mult – şi pe Beniamin, s-au dus în Egipt şi s-au prezentat înaintea lui Iosif.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare a meal; they are to eat with me at noon.”

Când l-a văzut pe Beniamin cu ei, Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Condu-i pe aceşti oameni înăuntru, taie un animal şi pregăteşte-l, pentru că vor prânzi împreună cu mine.“

The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house.

Administratorul a făcut aşa cum i-a poruncit Iosif şi i-a condus pe oameni în palatul lui Iosif.

Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, “We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.”

Lor le-a fost frică, pentru că au fost duşi în palatul lui Iosif şi şi-au zis: „Am fost aduşi înăuntru din cauza argintului care a fost pus în sacii noştri prima dată, pentru ca să ne atace, să ne biruiască, să ne înrobească şi să ne ia măgarii.“

So they went up to Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.

Ei s-au apropiat de administratorul gospodăriei lui Iosif şi au vorbit cu el la intrarea în palat.

“We beg your pardon, our lord,” they said, “we came down here the first time to buy food.

Ei i-au zis:

– Iartă-ne, domnul nostru … noi am mai venit o dată aici să cumpărăm mâncare,

But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver—the exact weight—in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us.

dar când am ajuns la locul unde am înnoptat şi ne-am deschis sacii, am găsit la gura sacilor fiecăruia tot argintul nostru. Aşa că l-am adus înapoi.

We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.”

Am mai adus cu noi şi alt argint ca să cumpărăm mâncare. Nu ştim cine ne-a pus argintul înapoi în saci.

“It’s all right,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

El le-a răspuns:

– Totul este în ordine, nu vă temeţi. Dumnezeul vostru, Dumnezeul tatălui vostru, v-a pus o comoară în saci; eu am primit argintul vostru.

Apoi l-a adus la ei şi pe Simeon.

The steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys.

Administratorul i-a condus pe oameni în palatul lui Iosif şi le-a dat apă ca să-şi spele picioarele şi nutreţ pentru măgari.

They prepared their gifts for Joseph’s arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there.

Ei au pregătit darul pentru Iosif care urma să vină la prânz, pentru că au auzit că vor mânca acolo.

When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground.

Când Iosif a venit acasă, ei i-au oferit darul pe care-l aduseseră în palat şi s-au prosternat înaintea lui.

He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?”

El i-a întrebat de sănătate şi le-a zis:

– Este sănătos bătrânul vostru tată despre care mi-aţi vorbit? Mai trăieşte?

They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him.

Ei i-au răspuns:

– Da, slujitorul tău, tatăl nostru, este sănătos! Mai trăieşte!

Apoi s-au plecat şi i s-au închinat.

As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.”

El l-a observat pe fratele său Beniamin, fiul mamei sale, şi a întrebat: „Acesta este fratele vostru mai mic despre care mi-aţi vorbit?“ Apoi a adăugat: „Dumnezeu să-ţi dea har, fiule!“

Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

Fiind foarte emoţionat la vederea fratelui său, Iosif a ieşit în grabă şi a căutat un loc unde să plângă. A intrat într-o cameră şi a plâns acolo.

After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, “Serve the food.”

Apoi şi-a spălat faţa, a revenit şi, stăpânindu-se, a poruncit: „Aduceţi de mâncare!“

They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians.

Pe el l-au servit separat, pe fraţii săi, separat, iar pe egiptenii care mâncau împreună cu el, separat, pentru că egiptenii nu puteau mânca cu evreii, aceasta fiind pentru ei o urâciune.

The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment.

Fraţii săi s-au aşezat înaintea lui, în ordinea vârstei, de la întâiul născut până la cel mai tânăr şi se uitau unii la alţii cu mirare.

When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

Li s-a servit câte o porţie de la masa lui Iosif, dar porţia lui Beniamin era de cinci ori mai mare decât a celorlalţi. Ei au băut şi s-au bucurat împreună cu el.
