Genesis 42

When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”

Când Iacov a aflat că în Egipt se găsesc grâne, le-a zis fiilor săi: „De ce staţi şi vă uitaţi unii la alţii?

He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

Am auzit că în Egipt se găsesc grâne; duceţi-vă şi cumpăraţi-ne de acolo grâne, pentru ca să trăim şi să nu murim.“

Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

Zece dintre fraţii lui Iosif s-au dus să cumpere grâne din Egipt.

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.

Dar Iacov nu l-a trimis şi pe Beniamin, fratele lui Iosif, împreună cu fraţii săi, pentru că se gândea să nu i se întâmple vreo nenorocire.

So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.

Astfel, pentru că şi în Canaan era foamete, fiii lui Israel s-au dus să cumpere grâne din Egipt împreună cu alţi oameni care mergeau într-acolo.

Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the person who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

Iosif era stăpânul ţării, cel care vindea hrană întregului popor al ţării. Când fraţii lui Iosif au ajuns la el, s-au plecat cu faţa până la pământ înaintea lui.

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

De îndată ce şi-a văzut fraţii, Iosif i-a recunoscut, dar s-a prefăcut că nu-i cunoaşte şi le-a vorbit cu asprime.

– De unde veniţi? i-a întrebat el.

– Venim din Canaan, ca să cumpărăm hrană, au răspuns ei.

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

Iosif i-a recunoscut pe fraţii săi, dar ei nu l-au recunoscut pe el.

Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

El şi-a amintit visele pe care le-a avut despre ei şi le-a zis:

– Voi sunteţi iscoade şi aţi venit să vedeţi unde este ţara neprotejată!

“No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.

– Nu, stăpâne, au răspuns ei, slujitorii tăi au venit să cumpere hrană.

We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”

Toţi suntem fiii aceluiaşi om. Suntem oameni cinstiţi; slujitorii tăi nu sunt iscoade.

“No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

Dar el le-a zis:

– Nu e adevărat, ci voi aţi venit să vedeţi unde este ţara neprotejată!

But they replied, “Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

Ei au răspuns:

– Noi, slujitorii tăi, suntem doisprezece fraţi, fiii aceluiaşi om din Canaan; cel mai mic este acum cu tatăl nostru, iar unul nu mai este.

Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!

Dar Iosif le-a zis:

– Sunteţi iscoade, aşa cum v-am spus!

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.

Iată cum veţi fi testaţi: pe viaţa lui Faraon că nu veţi pleca din acest loc decât dacă vine aici fratele vostru mai mic!

Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”

Trimiteţi-l pe unul dintre voi să-l aducă pe fratele vostru, iar ceilalţi să rămână în temniţă, pentru ca vorbele voastre să fie puse la încercare şi să se vadă dacă spuneţi adevărul; dacă nu, pe viaţa lui Faraon, cu siguranţă că sunteţi iscoade!

And he put them all in custody for three days.

Şi i-a aruncat pe toţi în temniţă pentru trei zile.

On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

A treia zi, Iosif le-a zis:

– Faceţi acest lucru şi veţi trăi; eu mă tem de Dumnezeu.

If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.

Dacă sunteţi oameni cinstiţi, unul dintre voi să rămână aici în temniţă, iar ceilalţi mergeţi, duceţi grâne familiilor voastre înfometate

But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

şi aduceţi-mi-l pe fratele vostru mai mic. Aşa vor fi verificate cuvintele voastre şi nu veţi muri.

Ei au făcut întocmai.

They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”

Şi-au zis unul altuia:

– Cu siguranţă plătim pedeapsa pentru ceea ce i-am făcut fratelui nostru, pentru că i-am văzut durerea sufletului când ne ruga pentru viaţa lui, dar nu l-am ascultat. De aceea a venit peste noi necazul acesta.

Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”

Ruben le-a răspuns:

– Nu v-am spus eu să nu păcătuiţi împotriva băiatului? Dar nu m-aţi ascultat. Acum trebuie să dăm socoteală de sângele lui.

They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.

Ei nu ştiau că Iosif îi înţelege, pentru că vorbea cu ei printr-un traducător.

He turned away from them and began to weep, but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

Iosif a plecat de lângă ei şi a început să plângă. Apoi s-a întors şi le-a vorbit din nou. L-a luat pe Simeon şi l-a legat în prezenţa lor.

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,

Apoi a dat poruncă să li se umple sacii cu grâne, să se pună fiecăruia argintul înapoi în sac şi să li se dea provizii pentru drum. După ce li s-au făcut aceste lucruri,

they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

ei au încărcat grânele pe măgari şi au plecat.

At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.

Când unul dintre ei şi-a deschis sacul ca să dea măgarului său nutreţ, în locul în care au înnoptat, şi-a văzut argintul la gura sacului.

“My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

El le-a zis fraţilor săi: „Argintul mi-a fost dat înapoi; este aici în sacul meu!“ Atunci li s-au înmuiat inimile şi şi-au zis unul altuia tremurând: „Ce ne-a făcut Dumnezeu?“

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said,

Când au ajuns la tatăl lor, Iacov, în Canaan, i-au povestit tot ce li se întâmplase. Ei au zis:

“The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.

– Acel om, stăpânul ţării, ne-a vorbit aspru şi ne-a luat drept iscoade ale ţării.

But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.

Dar noi i-am spus: „Suntem oameni cinstiţi, nu suntem iscoade.

We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’

Suntem doisprezece fraţi, fiii aceluiaşi tată; unul dintre noi nu mai este, iar cel mai mic este acum cu tatăl nostru în Canaan.“

“Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.

Atunci, omul acela, stăpânul ţării, ne-a spus: „Iată cum voi şti dacă sunteţi oameni cinstiţi: lăsaţi-l pe unul dintre voi cu mine, luaţi grâne pentru familiile voastre înfometate şi plecaţi.

But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade^[a] in the land.’”

Dar aduceţi-mi-l pe fratele vostru mai mic şi voi şti că nu sunteţi iscoade, ci oameni cinstiţi. Apoi vi-l voi da înapoi pe fratele vostru şi veţi putea face negoţ în ţară^[a].“

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.

Când şi-au golit sacii, fiecare a găsit în sacul său punga cu argint. Văzând pungile cu argint, ei şi tatăl lor s-au temut.

Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

Tatăl lor, Iacov, le-a zis:

– Voi m-aţi lăsat fără copii. Iosif nu mai este, Simeon nu mai este şi acum vreţi să-l luaţi şi pe Beniamin. Toate acestea sunt împotriva mea!^[b]

Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

Atunci Ruben i-a zis tatălui său:

– Să-i omori pe cei doi fii ai mei, dacă nu ţi-l voi aduce înapoi pe Beniamin. Lasă-l în grija mea şi ţi-l voi aduce înapoi.

But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

Dar el a răspuns:

– Fiul meu nu va merge cu voi, pentru că fratele său este mort şi doar el a mai rămas. Dacă i se va întâmpla vreo nenorocire în călătoria pe care o faceţi, cu durere îmi veţi coborî capul încărunţit în Locuinţa Morţilor.
