Genesis 40

Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.

După toate acestea, paharnicul şi brutarul monarhului Egiptului au păcătuit împotriva stăpânului lor, monarhul Egiptului.

Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,

Faraon s-a mâniat pe cei doi demnitari ai săi, pe căpetenia paharnicilor şi pe căpetenia brutarilor,

and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.

şi i-a pus sub pază în palatul conducătorului gărzii^[a], în aceeaşi temniţă în care era închis şi Iosif.

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

After they had been in custody for some time,

Conducătorul gărzii i-a dat în grija lui Iosif şi el i-a slujit, iar aceştia au rămas sub pază pentru o vreme.

each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.

Într-o noapte, amândoi, atât paharnicul, cât şi brutarul monarhului Egiptului, care erau întemniţaţi, au avut câte un vis, fiecare vis cu semnificaţia lui.

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.

Dimineaţa, când a venit la ei, Iosif a observat că erau tulburaţi.

So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”

El i-a întrebat pe demnitarii lui Faraon, care erau sub pază împreună cu el în palatul stăpânului său:

– De ce sunteţi atât de abătuţi astăzi?

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

– Am avut nişte vise, dar nu este nimeni care să ni le poată interpreta, au răspuns ei.

Atunci Iosif le-a zis:

– Oare nu lui Dumnezeu Îi aparţin interpretările viselor? Istorisiţi-mi mie visele.

So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me,

Căpetenia paharnicilor i-a istorisit visul său lui Iosif:

– În visul meu am văzut o viţă

and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes.

care avea trei ramuri. Imediat după ce a înmugurit, i s-a deschis floarea, iar ciorchinii s-au făcut struguri copţi.

Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”

Eu aveam cupa lui Faraon în mână, am luat strugurii, apoi i-am stors în cupă şi am pus cupa în mâna lui Faraon.

“This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days.

Iosif i-a zis:

– Aceasta este interpretarea visului: cele trei ramuri reprezintă trei zile;

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

peste trei zile, Faraon îţi va înălţa capul şi te va repune în slujbă, iar tu vei pune cupa în mâna sa, aşa cum făceai înainte, când erai paharnicul lui.

But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.

Dar când îţi va merge bine, adu-ţi aminte de mine, arată-ţi îndurarea faţă de mine, vorbindu-i lui Faraon despre mine şi scoate-mă din această temniţă,

I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

pentru că am fost luat cu forţa din ţara evreilor şi nici chiar aici n-am făcut nimic pentru care să merit să fiu aruncat în temniţă^[b].

When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.^[a]

Când căpetenia brutarilor a văzut că Iosif a dat o interpretare îmbucurătoare, i-a zis:

– Şi eu am avut un vis! Se făcea că pe capul meu se aflau trei coşuri de pâine^[c];

In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

în coşul de deasupra erau tot felul de aluaturi coapte pentru Faraon, dar păsările le mâncau din coşul de pe capul meu.

“This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days.

Iosif i-a răspuns:

– Aceasta este interpretarea visului: cele trei coşuri reprezintă trei zile;

Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”

peste trei zile, Faraon îţi va tăia capul^[d] şi te va spânzura de un copac^[e], iar carnea ţi-o vor mânca păsările.

Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:

A treia zi, Faraon şi-a sărbătorit ziua de naştere şi le-a dat un ospăţ tuturor slujitorilor săi. Dintre demnitarii săi, Faraon a înălţat capul căpeteniei paharnicilor şi pe al căpeteniei brutarilor.

He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand—

El a repus în slujbă pe căpetenia paharnicilor, care a pus din nou cupa în mâna lui Faraon,

but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

însă pe căpetenia brutarilor a spânzurat-o, întocmai cum le interpretase Iosif.

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Dar căpetenia paharnicilor nu şi-a mai adus aminte de Iosif, ci l-a uitat.
