Genesis 4

Adam^[a] made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.^[b] She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth^[c] a man.”

Adam a cunoscut-o^[a] pe soţia sa, Eva, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi l-a născut pe Cain^[b]. Ea a zis: „Am căpătat^[c] un om cu ajutorul Domnului.“

Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.

Apoi l-a născut pe Abel, fratele lui Cain. Abel era păstor, iar Cain – plugar.

In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.

După o vreme, Cain I-a adus Domnului o jertfă din rodul pământului,

And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,

iar Abel I-a adus o jertfă din întâii născuţi ai turmei sale şi din grăsimea lor. Domnul a privit cu plăcere spre Abel şi jertfa lui,

but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

însă spre Cain şi jertfa lui nu a privit cu plăcere. Cain s-a mâniat foarte tare şi i s-a posomorât faţa.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?

Domnul i-a zis lui Cain: „De ce te-ai mâniat şi de ce ţi s-a posomorât faţa?

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Dacă faci ce este bine, oare nu vei fi primit? Dar dacă nu faci ce este bine, păcatul pândeşte la uşă, dorinţa lui este să te domine, dar tu trebuie să-l stăpâneşti.“

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”^[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Cain i-a zis fratelui său, Abel: „Haidem să ieşim la câmp!^[d]“ Pe când se aflau acolo, Cain l-a lovit pe fratele său, Abel, şi l-a omorât.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Atunci Domnul l-a întrebat pe Cain:

– Unde este fratele tău, Abel?

– Nu ştiu, a răspuns el. Sunt eu păzitorul fratelui meu?

The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.

Domnul i-a zis:

– Ce ai făcut? Ascultă: glasul sângelui fratelui tău strigă din pământ către Mine!

Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

Acum eşti blestemat de pământul care şi-a deschis gura să primească sângele fratelui tău din mâna ta.

When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

Când vei ara pământul, el nu-ţi va mai da recolta^[e]; pe pământ vei fi un pribeag, un rătăcitor.

Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.

Cain I-a spus Domnului:

– Pedeapsa mea este prea mare ca s-o pot purta.

Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

Din moment ce m-ai izgonit astăzi de pe faţa pământului şi trebuie să mă ascund de faţa Ta şi să devin un pribeag, un rătăcitor pe pământ, atunci oricine mă va întâlni mă va ucide.

But the Lord said to him, “Not so^[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

Domnul i-a răspuns:

– Nu va fi aşa; dacă cineva îl va ucide pe Cain, Cain va fi răzbunat de şapte ori.

Domnul a hotărât un semn pentru Cain, pentru ca oricine îl va găsi să nu-l omoare.

So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,^[f] east of Eden.

Cain a plecat din prezenţa Domnului şi s-a aşezat în ţara Nod^[f], la răsărit de Eden.

Începuturile civilizaţiei

Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

Cain a cunoscut-o pe soţia sa, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi l-a născut pe Enoh. Cain a construit o cetate şi a numit-o Enoh, după numele fiului său.

To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

Lui Enoh i s-a născut Irad, iar Irad a fost tatăl^[g] lui Mehuiael. Mehuiael a fost tatăl lui Metuşael, iar Metuşael a fost tatăl lui Lameh.

Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

Lameh şi-a luat două soţii: pe una o chema Ada, iar pe cealaltă – Ţila.

Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

Ada l-a născut pe Iabal; el a fost tatăl celor care locuiesc în corturi şi au turme.

His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.

Numele fratelui său era Iubal; el a fost tatăl tuturor celor care cântă cu lira şi cu fluierul.

Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of^[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

Ţila l-a născut pe Tubal-Cain, care a făcut tot felul de unelte^[h] din bronz şi fier. Sora lui Tubal-Cain a fost Naama.

Lamech said to his wives,

Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,^[h] saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”

Adam a cunoscut-o din nou pe soţia sa. Aceasta a născut un fiu pe care l-a numit Set^[j], zicând: „Dumnezeu mi-a dăruit un alt urmaş^[k] în locul lui Abel, întrucât el a fost omorât de Cain.“

Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.

At that time people began to call on^[i] the name of the Lord.

Lui Set i s-a născut un fiu căruia i-a pus numele Enoş^[l]. Atunci au început oamenii să cheme Numele Domnului.
