Genesis 38

At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

În vremea aceea, Iuda a plecat de la fraţii săi şi s-a aşezat în vecinătatea unui adulamit pe care îl chema Hira.

There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her;

Iuda a întâlnit-o acolo pe fiica unui canaanit pe care-l chema Şua, s-a căsătorit cu ea şi a intrat la ea.

she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.

Ea a rămas însărcinată şi a născut un fiu căruia Iuda i-a pus numele Er.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.

Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată şi a născut un fiu căruia i-a pus numele Onan.

She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

A născut un alt fiu şi i-a pus numele Şela. Ea l-a născut în Chezib.

Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

Iuda i-a luat o soţie lui Er, întâiul său născut; numele ei era Tamar.

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

Dar Er, întâiul născut al lui Iuda, era rău înaintea Domnului, astfel că Domnul l-a omorât.

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”

Atunci Iuda i-a zis lui Onan: „Căsătoreşte-te cu soţia fratelui tău şi împlineşte-ţi faţă de ea datoria de cumnat^[a]: ridică-i un urmaş fratelui tău.“

But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.

Dar pentru că ştia că urmaşul nu va fi al său, Onan vărsa sămânţa pe pământ ori de câte ori intra la soţia fratelui său, pentru a nu-i da un urmaş fratelui său.

What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

Ceea ce făcea Onan era o nelegiuire înaintea Domnului, aşa că Domnul l-a omorât şi pe el.

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.

Atunci Iuda i-a zis nurorii sale, Tamar: „Rămâi văduvă în casa tatălui tău până va creşte fiul meu Şela.“ El spunea însă aşa, de teamă ca nu cumva şi acesta să moară, ca şi fraţii săi. Astfel, Tamar s-a întors în casa tatălui ei.

After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

După mai multă vreme, soţia lui Iuda, fiica lui Şua, a murit. După ce a depăşit durerea pierderii ei, Iuda s-a dus împreună cu adulamitul Hira, prietenul său, la Timna, la cei care-i tundeau oile.

When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”

Tamarei i s-a spus: „Socrul tău se duce la Timna, ca să-şi tundă oile.“

she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

Atunci ea şi-a schimbat hainele de văduvă, s-a acoperit cu un văl şi s-a înfăşurat cu un şal, apoi s-a aşezat la intrarea în Enayim, care se află în drum spre Timna. Îşi dăduse seama că, deşi Şela crescuse, ea nu-i fusese dată de soţie.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

Când Iuda a văzut-o, a crezut că este o prostituată, pentru că avea faţa acoperită.

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”

“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.

El s-a îndreptat către ea pe marginea drumului şi, fără să ştie că era nora sa, i-a zis:

– Lasă-mă să intru la tine!

– Ce-mi vei da, dacă intri la mine? a întrebat ea.

“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.

– Îţi voi trimite un ied din turmă, a răspuns el.

– Doar dacă îmi dai o garanţie până îl vei trimite, a spus ea.

He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

– Ce garanţie să-ţi dau? a întrebat el.

– Sigiliul^[b] tău, şnurul tău şi toiagul din mâna ta, a răspuns ea.

El i le-a dat şi a intrat la ea, iar ea a rămas însărcinată de la el.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.

După aceea ea a plecat îndată, şi-a dat jos vălul şi s-a schimbat în hainele de văduvă.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

Când Iuda a trimis iedul prin prietenul său adulamit, ca să recupereze garanţia de la femeie, acesta n-a mai găsit-o.

He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”

“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.

El i-a întrebat pe localnici:

– Unde este prostituata^[c] care stătea lângă drum, la Enayim?

– N-a fost aici nici o prostituată, au răspuns ei.

So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”

El s-a întors la Iuda şi i-a zis:

– N-am găsit-o; mai mult, localnicii au zis că n-a fost nici o prostituată acolo.

Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”

Iuda a răspuns:

– Să ţină ce a luat, numai să nu ne facem de râs; am trimis acest ied, dar n-ai mai găsit-o.

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

După trei luni, lui Iuda i s-a spus:

– Nora ta, Tamar, s-a prostituat şi chiar a rămas însărcinată în urma desfrânării ei.

– Scoateţi-o afară ca să fie arsă! a spus Iuda.

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”

Pe când era scoasă afară, ea i-a trimis vorbă socrului ei: „Proprietarul acestor lucruri m-a lăsat însărcinată; vezi dacă recunoşti ale cui sunt acest sigiliu, şnur şi toiag.“

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.

Iuda le-a recunoscut şi a zis: „Ea este mai puţin vinovată decât mine, pentru că nu i-am dat-o de soţie fiului meu Şela.“ De atunci nu s-a mai apropiat de ea.

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.

Când i-a venit vremea să nască, în pântecele ei se aflau gemeni.

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.”

În timpul naşterii, unul dintre ei a scos mâna; moaşa i-a apucat-o şi a legat-o cu un fir roşu, zicând: „Acesta a ieşit primul!“

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.^[a]

Dar el şi-a tras mâna înapoi şi a ieşit fratele său; atunci ea a zis: „Ce spărtură ai făcut!“ De aceea i s-a pus numele Pereţ^[d].

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.^[b]

După aceea a ieşit fratele său, cel cu firul roşu legat la mână şi i s-a pus numele Zerah^[e].
