Genesis 37

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

Iacov s-a aşezat în ţara în care a locuit tatăl său, în Canaan.

This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

Aceasta este istoria^[a] lui Iacov.

La vârsta de şaptesprezece ani, Iosif păştea turma împreună cu fraţii săi, fiii Bilhei şi ai Zilpei, soţiile tatălui său; el îi spunea tatălui lor lucrurile rele pe care aceştia le făceau.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate^[a] robe for him.

Israel îl îndrăgea pe Iosif mai mult decât pe toţi ceilalţi fii ai săi, pentru că era un fiu născut la bătrâneţe şi i-a făcut o tunică decorată^[b].

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Când fraţii săi au văzut că tatăl lor îl îndrăgea mai mult decât pe ei, l-au urât pe Iosif şi n-au putut să-i vorbească prieteneşte.

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

Iosif a avut un vis pe care l-a istorisit fraţilor săi, dar aceştia l-au urât şi mai mult.

He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had:

El le-a zis:

– Ascultaţi visul pe care l-am avut!

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

Se făcea că eram la legatul snopilor pe câmp. Deodată, snopul meu s-a ridicat în picioare, iar snopii voştri s-au adunat în jurul lui şi s-au plecat înaintea snopului meu.

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Fraţii săi i-au răspuns:

– Doar nu vei domni tu peste noi?! Doar nu ne vei stăpâni tu?!

Şi l-au urât şi mai mult din cauza viselor şi a cuvintelor sale.

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

Iosif a mai avut un vis şi l-a istorisit şi pe acesta fraţilor săi:

– Am mai avut un vis, a spus el. Se făcea că soarele, luna şi unsprezece stele se plecau înaintea mea.

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”

Dar când le-a istorisit acest vis tatălui şi fraţilor săi, tatăl său l-a mustrat zicându-i:

– Ce fel de vis este acesta pe care l-ai avut? Oare vom veni eu, mama ta şi fraţii tăi ca să ne prosternăm înaintea ta?

His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

Fraţii săi l-au invidiat, dar tatăl său a ţinut minte acest vis.

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,

Fraţii săi s-au dus să pască turma tatălui lor lângă Şehem.

and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

Israel i-a zis lui Iosif:

– Ştii că fraţii tăi pasc oile lângă Şehem. Vino, căci vreau să te trimit la ei.

– Sunt gata, a răspuns el.

So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

– Du-te, vezi dacă fraţii tăi şi turma sunt bine şi adu-mi veşti! i-a zis Israel.

Apoi l-a trimis din valea Hebron. Când a ajuns la Şehem,

a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

un om l-a găsit rătăcind pe câmp şi l-a întrebat:

– Ce cauţi?

He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

– Îi caut pe fraţii mei, a răspuns el; spune-mi, te rog, unde pasc ei turma?

“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

Omul acela i-a răspuns:

– Au plecat de aici. I-am auzit sfătuindu-se să meargă la Dotan.

Iosif s-a dus pe urma fraţilor săi şi i-a găsit la Dotan.

But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

Ei l-au văzut de departe şi, înainte ca el să ajungă la ei, au pus la cale să-l omoare.

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.

Ei s-au sfătuit astfel:

– Vine „visătorul“!

“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

Haideţi să-l omorâm şi să-l aruncăm într-una dintre aceste gropi. Vom spune că l-a mâncat un animal sălbatic şi vom vedea ce se va alege de visele lui.

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.

Dar când Ruben a auzit lucrul acesta, a încercat să-l scape din mâinile lor, zicând:

– Să nu-i luăm viaţa!

“Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

Fără vărsare de sânge! a continuat el. Aruncaţi-l în această fântână din pustie, fără să vă întindeţi mâna asupra lui.

Spunea aceasta pentru ca să-l scape din mâinile lor şi să-l aducă înapoi la tatăl său.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—

Când Iosif a ajuns la fraţii săi, aceştia l-au dezbrăcat de tunica sa, de tunica decorată pe care o purta,

and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

l-au luat şi l-au aruncat într-o fântână; fântâna era goală, fără pic de apă în ea.

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

Apoi s-au aşezat să mănânce. Dintr-odată au observat apropiindu-se o caravană de-a ismaeliţilor venind din Ghilad şi ducând în Egipt, pe cămilele lor, condimente, balsam şi smirnă.

Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

Iuda le-a zis fraţilor săi: „Ce câştigăm dacă ne omorâm fratele şi-i ascundem sângele?

Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

Haideţi să-l vindem ismaeliţilor şi să nu ne întindem mâna asupra lui, căci totuşi este fratele nostru, carne din carnea noastră.“ Fraţii săi au fost de acord.

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels^[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

Când s-au apropiat negustorii midianiţi, fraţii săi l-au scos pe Iosif afară din fântână şi l-au vândut ismaeliţilor cu douăzeci de şecheli^[c] de argint. Aceştia l-au dus pe Iosif în Egipt.

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

Când Ruben s-a întors la fântână şi a văzut că Iosif nu mai era acolo, şi-a sfâşiat hainele.

He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

Apoi s-a dus la fraţii săi şi le-a zis: „Copilul a dispărut; ce mă fac?“

Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

Dar ei au luat tunica lui Iosif, au înjunghiat un ţap şi au înmuiat tunica în sânge.

They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

I-au trimis tunica decorată tatălui lor, zicând: „Am găsit asta; vezi dacă nu este tunica fiului tău.“

He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

El a recunoscut-o şi a zis: „Este tunica fiului meu! L-a mâncat un animal sălbatic; fără îndoială, Iosif a fost sfâşiat în bucăţi.“

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

Atunci Iacov şi-a sfâşiat hainele, şi-a pus un sac pe coapse şi l-a jelit pe fiul său multe zile.

All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

Toţi fiii şi fiicele sale au venit să-l mângâie, dar el n-a vrut să fie mângâiat, ci l-a bocit zicând: „Jelind voi coborî la fiul meu în Locuinţa Morţilor^[d].“

Meanwhile, the Midianites^[c] sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

Midianiţii^[e] l-au vândut pe Iosif în Egipt lui Potifar, unul dintre demnitarii lui Faraon şi conducător al gărzii^[f].
