Genesis 34

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.

Dina, fiica pe care Lea i-o născuse lui Iacov, a ieşit să vadă fetele ţării.

When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.

Când a văzut-o, Şehem, fiul hivitului Hamor, prinţul ţării, a luat-o, s-a culcat cu ea şi astfel a necinstit-o.

His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.

El s-a îndrăgostit de Dina, fiica lui Iacov, a îndrăgit-o şi i-a vorbit frumos.

And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”

Apoi i-a zis tatălui său, Hamor: „Ia-mi pe această fată de soţie!“

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

Iacov a aflat că Şehem a necinstit-o pe fiica sa, Dina, însă pentru că fiii săi erau cu animalele la câmp, a tăcut până când s-au întors ei.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.

Hamor, tatăl lui Şehem, a venit la Iacov să-i vorbească.

Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in^[a] Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.

Imediat ce-au auzit cele întâmplate, fiii lui Iacov s-au întors de la câmp. Ei s-au supărat şi s-au mâniat foarte tare, pentru că Şehem a făcut un lucru ruşinos în^[a] Israel, culcându-se cu fiica lui Iacov; un astfel de lucru nu trebuia făcut.

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.

Însă Hamor le-a vorbit astfel:

– Fiul meu, Şehem, s-a îndrăgostit de fiica voastră; vă rog, daţi-i-o de soţie.

Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.

Încuscriţi-vă cu noi: daţi-ne fiicele voastre şi luaţi fiicele noastre pentru voi.

You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade^[b] in it, and acquire property in it.”

Locuiţi împreună cu noi; întrucât ţara este înaintea voastră, locuiţi în ea, faceţi negoţ^[b] şi dobândiţi proprietăţi în ea.

Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.

Şehem le-a mai spus tatălui şi fraţilor Dinei:

– Să găsesc bunăvoinţă la voi şi vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere.

Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”

Cereţi-mi o zestre şi un dar cât de mari vreţi, iar eu vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere; doar daţi-mi fata de soţie.

Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.

Fiii lui Iacov le-au răspuns cu viclenie lui Şehem şi tatălui său, Hamor, pentru că Şehem a necinstit-o pe sora lor, Dina,

They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.

zicând:

– Nu putem face acest lucru; nu putem s-o dăm pe sora noastră unui bărbat necircumcis, pentru că aceasta ar fi o ocară pentru noi.

We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.

Vom fi de acord doar dacă voi vă veţi face ca noi, adică doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre voi va fi circumcis.

Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.

Apoi vă vom da fiicele noastre şi le vom lua pentru noi pe fiicele voastre; vom locui împreună cu voi şi vom alcătui un singur popor.

But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”

Dar dacă nu ne veţi asculta ca să vă circumcideţi, ne vom lua fata şi vom pleca.

Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.

Lui Hamor şi lui Şehem, fiul acestuia, le-a plăcut cererea.

The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.

Tânărul, care era cel mai respectat în familia tatălui său, n-a întârziat să facă lucrul cerut, pentru că îi plăcea de fiica lui Iacov.

So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city.

Astfel, Hamor şi fiul său, Şehem, au venit la poarta cetăţii lor şi le-au vorbit bărbaţilor din cetate astfel:

“These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.

„Aceşti bărbaţi sunt paşnici cu noi; să locuiască în ţară şi să facă negoţ în ea, pentru că ţara este suficient de mare pentru ei; să ne luăm soţii dintre fiicele lor, iar noi să le dăm pe fiicele noastre, lor.

But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.

Ei vor să locuiască împreună cu noi şi să alcătuim un singur popor doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre noi va fi circumcis, aşa cum sunt şi ei.

Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.”

Nu vor fi atunci vitele, bogăţiile şi toate animalele lor ale noastre? Deci să fim de acord şi să-i lăsăm să locuiască împreună cu noi.“

All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

Toţi cei care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au ascultat de Hamor şi de fiul său, Şehem, astfel că toţi bărbaţii care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au fost circumcişi.

Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.

A treia zi, pe când sufereau ei încă, doi dintre fiii lui Iacov, Simeon şi Levi, fraţii Dinei, şi-au luat săbiile, au atacat cetatea care se credea în siguranţă şi i-au ucis pe toţi bărbaţii.

They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left.

Ei i-au ucis cu sabia pe Hamor şi pe fiul său, Şehem, au luat-o pe Dina din casa lui Şehem şi au plecat.

The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where^[c] their sister had been defiled.

Fiii lui Iacov s-au năpustit asupra celor înjunghiaţi şi au jefuit cetatea, pentru că^[c] o necinstiseră pe sora lor.

They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.

Le-au luat oile, vitele, măgarii şi tot ce era în cetate şi pe câmp.

They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.

Le-au luat ca pradă toată bogăţia, toţi copiii şi soţiile şi au jefuit tot ce era în case.

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

Atunci Iacov le-a zis lui Simeon şi lui Levi:

– M-aţi nenorocit făcându-mă urât canaaniţilor şi periziţilor, locuitorii ţării; eu am puţini oameni în subordine, iar ei se vor strânge împotriva mea şi mă vor omorî, astfel încât voi fi nimicit eu şi familia mea.

But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”

Dar ei i-au răspuns:

– Se cuvenea ca el să se poarte cu sora noastră ca şi cu o prostituată?
