Genesis 33

Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.

La un moment dat, Iacov şi-a ridicat privirea şi l-a văzut pe Esau venind cu patru sute de bărbaţi. Atunci el şi-a împărţit copiii între Lea, Rahela şi cele două sclave.

He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.

Le-a pus pe cele două sclave împreună cu copiii lor în faţă, apoi pe Lea împreună cu copiii ei, iar la urmă de tot pe Rahela cu Iosif.

He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.

El însuşi s-a aşezat înaintea lor şi s-a plecat până la pământ de şapte ori în timp ce se apropia de fratele său.

But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.

Dar Esau a alergat să-l întâmpine şi l-a îmbrăţişat; şi-a pus mâinile în jurul gâtului său, l-a sărutat, apoi au plâns împreună.

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.

Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”

Când Esau şi-a ridicat privirea şi a văzut femeile şi copiii, a întrebat:

– Cine sunt aceştia care vin în urma ta?

– Sunt copiii cu care Dumnezeu l-a binecuvântat pe slujitorul tău, a răspuns Iacov.

Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down.

Apoi sclavele şi copiii lor s-au apropiat şi s-au plecat înaintea lui Esau;

Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.

de asemenea, Lea şi copiii ei s-au apropiat şi s-au plecat înaintea lui; iar în cele din urmă, Iosif şi Rahela s-au apropiat şi s-au plecat şi ei înaintea lui.

Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”

“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,” he said.

Esau a întrebat:

– Ce ai de gând să faci cu toată tabăra aceea pe care am întâlnit-o?

– Să găsesc bunăvoinţă la stăpânul meu, a răspuns Iacov.

But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”

– Eu am destul, frate, i-a spus Esau; păstrează ce ai pentru tine.

“No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.

Dar Iacov i-a răspuns:

– Nu, te rog! Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine, primeşte darul meu, căci, cu adevărat, atunci când ţi-am văzut faţa, parcă aş fi văzut faţa lui Dumnezeu, iar tu ai fost binevoitor cu mine.

Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.

Te rog, primeşte binecuvântarea mea, care ţi-a fost adusă, pentru că Dumnezeu a fost bun cu mine şi am de toate. Astfel, Iacov a insistat, iar Esau a primit.

Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”

Apoi Esau a zis:

– Hai să pornim şi să ne continuăm călătoria; eu voi merge înaintea ta.

But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.

Însă Iacov i-a răspuns:

– Stăpânul meu ştie că pruncii sunt plăpânzi şi că trebuie să am grijă de oile şi vitele care alăptează; dacă sunt silite la drum o singură zi, toate vor muri.

So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”

Să meargă stăpânul meu înaintea slujitorului său, iar eu voi veni încet, la pas cu turma care este înaintea mea şi cu copiii, până voi ajunge la stăpânul meu, în Seir.

Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”

“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

Esau i-a zis:

– Atunci, dă-mi voie să las câţiva dintre oamenii mei cu tine.

– Pentru ce asta? a răspuns Iacov. Mi-ajunge să găsesc bunăvoinţă la stăpânul meu.

So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.

În aceeaşi zi, Esau s-a întors în Seir.

Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.^[a]

Însă Iacov a călătorit spre Sucot unde şi-a zidit o casă şi a făcut adăposturi pentru turmele sale; de aceea acel loc se numeşte Sucot^[a].

After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,^[b] he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.

Întorcându-se din Padan-Aram, Iacov a ajuns în siguranţă în cetatea Şehem^[b], care se află în Canaan, şi şi-a aşezat tabăra în faţa cetăţii.

For a hundred pieces of silver,^[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.

Cu o sută de chesita^[c], el a cumpărat de la fiii lui Hamor, tatăl lui Şehem, partea de teren pe care şi-a întins cortul.

There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.^[d]

Acolo a ridicat un altar şi l-a numit El-Elohe-Israel^[d].
