Genesis 30

When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Când Rahela a văzut că ea nu i-a născut nici un copil lui Iacov, a invidiat-o pe sora sa şi i-a zis lui Iacov:

– Dă-mi copii, altfel voi muri!

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”

Iacov s-a mâniat pe Rahela şi i-a răspuns:

– Sunt eu în locul lui Dumnezeu, Care te-a oprit să ai copii?

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”

Apoi ea i-a zis:

– Aici este sclava mea, Bilha! Intră la ea, pentru ca ea să nască pe genunchii mei^[a] şi pentru ca să-mi pot zidi şi eu o familie prin ea.

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her,

Astfel, Rahela i-a dat-o de soţie^[b] lui Iacov pe sclava ei, Bilha; Iacov a intrat la ea^[c],

and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un fiu.

Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.^[a]

Atunci Rahela a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a făcut dreptate, mi-a auzit glasul şi mi-a dat un fiu!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Dan^[d].

Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

Bilha, sclava Rahelei, a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.” So she named him Naphtali.^[b]

Atunci Rahela a zis: „Cu lupte mari m-am războit cu sora mea şi am biruit!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Neftali^[e].

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

Când Lea a văzut că ea a încetat să mai aibă copii, a luat-o pe sclava ei, Zilpa, şi i-a dat-o de soţie lui Iacov.

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

Zilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut un fiu lui Iacov.

Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”^[c] So she named him Gad.^[d]

Lea a zis: „Ce noroc!“ şi i-a pus numele Gad^[f].

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

Zilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me happy.” So she named him Asher.^[e]

Lea a zis: „Cât de fericită sunt, pentru că femeile mă vor numi fericită!“; şi i-a pus numele Aşer^[g].

During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

Pe vremea seceratului grâului, Ruben a plecat la câmp şi a găsit mandragore pe care le-a adus mamei lui, Lea. Rahela i-a zis Leei:

– Te rog, dă-mi şi mie din mandragorele fiului tău.

But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”

Dar ea a răspuns:

– Nu-ţi ajunge că mi-ai luat bărbatul, de vrei să iei şi mandragorele fiului meu?

– Bine, a spus Rahela, se poate culca cu tine la noapte în schimbul mandragorelor fiului tău.

So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.

God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.

Dumnezeu a ascultat-o pe Lea, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al cincilea fiu.

Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.^[f]

Lea a zis: „Dumnezeu m-a răsplătit, pentru că am dat-o pe sclava mea soţului meu.“ Şi i-a pus numele Isahar^[h].

Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.

Lea a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al şaselea fiu.

Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.^[g]

Ea a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a oferit un dar preţios! De data aceasta soţul meu mă va onora, pentru că i-am născut şase fii!“ Şi i-a pus celui din urmă numele Zabulon^[i].

Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

După aceea a născut o fiică pe care a numit-o Dina.

Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive.

Dumnezeu Şi-a adus aminte de Rahela, a ascultat-o şi i-a deschis pântecele.

She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”

Ea a rămas însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a luat ocara!“

She named him Joseph,^[h] and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

I-a pus numele Iosif^[j], zicând: „Domnul să-mi mai adauge un fiu!“

Îmbogăţirea lui Iacov

After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland.

După ce Rahela l-a născut pe Iosif, Iacov i-a zis lui Laban:

– Lasă-mă să plec, să mă întorc acasă, în ţara mea.

Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

Dă-mi soţiile şi copiii pentru care ţi-am slujit, ca astfel să pot pleca, căci ştii cât ţi-am slujit.

But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”

Dar Laban i-a răspuns:

– Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine, te rog să mai rămâi. Am aflat prin ghicire că^[k] Domnul m-a binecuvântat datorită ţie;

He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”

spune-mi plata şi ţi-o voi da.

Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care.

Atunci Iacov i-a zis:

– Ştii cum ţi-am slujit şi cum le-a mers animalelor cu mine,

The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?”

pentru că puţinul pe care-l aveai înainte să vin eu s-a înmulţit foarte mult; Domnul te-a binecuvântat oriunde m-am dus eu. Acum dar, când voi lucra şi pentru familia mea?

“What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them:

Laban a întrebat:

– Ce să-ţi dau?

– Nu trebuie să-mi dai nimic, a răspuns Iacov. Dacă vrei să continui să-ţi păstoresc şi să-ţi păzesc turma, fă următorul lucru pentru mine:

Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages.

lasă-mă să trec astăzi prin turma ta şi să pun deoparte toţi mieii pestriţi şi cu pete, toţi mieii negri şi toţi iezii cu pete şi pestriţi; aceasta să-mi fie plata.

And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.”

În viitor, dreptatea mea va vorbi pentru mine atunci când îmi vei vedea plata: tot ce nu va fi pătat sau pestriţ între capre şi negru între miei, dar care va fi găsit la mine, să fie socotit ca furat.

“Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”

That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons.

În acea zi, el a pus deoparte ţapii vărgaţi şi cu pete, toate caprele pestriţe şi cu pete, toate cele care aveau alb pe ele, şi toţi mieii negri şi le-a dat în grija fiilor săi.

Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.

Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink,

they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.

Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals.

Iacov a despărţit mieii, iar oile lui Laban le-a pus cu faţa spre oile negre şi pestriţe. El şi-a pus deoparte turmele lui şi nu le-a amestecat cu cele ale lui Laban.

Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,

Ori de câte ori oile mai puternice erau în călduri, Iacov punea nuiele înaintea lor, în jgheaburi, pentru ca ele să zămislească lângă acestea.

but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.

Dar când oile erau slabe, nu punea nuiele, astfel încât cele slabe erau pentru Laban, iar cele puternice, pentru Iacov.

In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

Acest om s-a îmbogăţit foarte mult şi avea multe turme, sclave şi sclavi, cămile şi măgari.
