Genesis 29

Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.

Apoi Iacov şi-a continuat călătoria şi a ajuns în ţara popoarelor din răsărit.

There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large.

A văzut o fântână pe câmp şi trei turme de oi stând lângă ea, pentru că din acea fântână erau adăpate turmele; piatra de pe gura fântânii era mare.

When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

Atunci când toate turmele erau adunate acolo, păstorii dădeau la o parte piatra de la gura fântânii şi adăpau oile; apoi puneau piatra înapoi, la locul ei, pe gura fântânii.

Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”

“We’re from Harran,” they replied.

Iacov i-a întrebat pe păstori:

– Fraţilor, de unde sunteţi?

– Din Haran, au răspuns ei.

He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”

“Yes, we know him,” they answered.

– Îl cunoaşteţi pe Laban, nepotul lui Nahor? i-a întrebat Iacov.

– Îl cunoaştem.

Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”

“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep.”

El i-a mai întrebat:

– Este sănătos?

– Este sănătos, au răspuns ei; uite, Rahela, fiica lui, vine cu oile.

“Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”

Atunci Iacov a zis:

– Este încă devreme; nu este timpul să fie adunate turmele. Adăpaţi oile, apoi duceţi-vă şi paşteţi-le din nou.

“We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”

– Nu putem, au răspuns ei, până când nu se adună toate turmele ca astfel piatra să se dea la o parte de pe gura fântânii; abia după aceea adăpăm oile.

While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd.

În timp ce vorbea cu ei, a sosit Rahela cu oile tatălui ei, pentru că ea le păstorea.

When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep.

Când a văzut-o pe Rahela, fiica lui Laban, fratele mamei sale, şi oile lui Laban, Iacov s-a apropiat de fântână, a dat la o parte piatra de pe gura fântânii şi a adăpat turma lui Laban, fratele mamei sale.

Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud.

El a sărutat-o pe Rahela şi a plâns în hohote.

He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father.

Iacov i-a spus Rahelei că el este rudă cu tatăl ei, deoarece este fiul Rebecăi; ea a alergat şi i-a spus tatălui ei despre aceasta.

As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things.

Când a auzit veştile despre Iacov, fiul surorii sale, Laban a alergat să-l întâmpine. L-a îmbrăţişat, l-a sărutat şi l-a dus în casa sa. Iacov i-a spus lui Laban toate aceste lucruri.

Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month,

Apoi Laban i-a zis: „Cu siguranţă, tu eşti os din oasele mele şi carne din carnea mea!“ Şi Iacov a locuit timp de o lună în casa lui Laban.

Căsătoria lui Iacov cu fiicele lui Laban

Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”

După aceea, Laban i-a zis lui Iacov:

– Să-mi slujeşti degeaba doar pentru că eşti rudă cu mine? Spune-mi: care să-ţi fie plata?

Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

Laban avea două fete; pe cea mai mare o chema Lea, iar pe cea mai mică, Rahela.

Leah had weak^[a] eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful.

Ochii Leei erau delicaţi^[a], însă Rahela era întru totul atrăgătoare şi frumoasă.

Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”

Iacov o iubea pe Rahela, aşa că i-a răspuns lui Laban:

– Îţi voi sluji şapte ani pentru fiica ta cea mică, Rahela.

Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.”

– Mai bine să ţi-o dau ţie, decât să i-o dau unui alt bărbat, a spus Laban; rămâi la mine.

So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

Astfel, Iacov i-a slujit lui Laban şapte ani pentru Rahela, dar aceşti ani i s-au părut ca şi cum ar fi fost doar câteva zile, datorită dragostei sale pentru ea.

Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.”

La sfârşitul celor şapte ani, Iacov i-a zis lui Laban: „Dă-mi soţia, pentru că s-a împlinit vremea să intru la ea.“

So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.

Laban i-a adunat pe toţi oamenii din acel loc şi le-a dat un ospăţ.

But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her.

Seara, a luat-o pe fiica sa Lea şi a adus-o la Iacov, iar el a intrat la ea.

And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant.

Laban i-a dat-o ca sclavă fiicei sale Lea, pe Zilpa.

When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?”

A doua zi, dimineaţa, Iacov a descoperit că era Lea. Atunci l-a întrebat pe Laban:

– Ce mi-ai făcut? Nu pentru Rahela ţi-am slujit? Atunci de ce m-ai înşelat?

Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.

Laban i-a răspuns:

– Aici, la noi, nu se obişnuieşte să se dea în căsătorie fata mai mică înaintea celei mai mari.

Finish this daughter’s bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.”

Împlineşte săptămâna nupţială cu aceasta; apoi ţi-o vom da şi pe cealaltă pentru încă şapte ani de slujire.

And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

Iacov a făcut astfel şi a împlinit săptămâna cu Lea; apoi Laban i-a dat-o de soţie pe fiica sa Rahela.

Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.

Laban i-a dat-o ca sclavă fiicei sale Rahela, pe Bilha.

Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

Jacob’s Children

Iacov a intrat la Rahela şi a iubit-o mai mult decât pe Lea. Apoi i-a slujit lui Laban încă şapte ani.

Copiii lui Iacov

When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.

Când Domnul a văzut că Lea nu era iubită, i-a deschis pântecele, pe când Rahela a rămas stearpă.

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,^[b] for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.”

Lea a rămas însărcinată şi a născut un fiu căruia i-a pus numele Ruben^[b], deoarece a zis: „Domnul a văzut suferinţa mea; acum, cu siguranţă, soţul meu mă va iubi.“

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.^[c]

Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „Pentru că Domnul a auzit că nu sunt iubită, mi l-a dat şi pe acesta!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Simeon^[c].

Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.^[d]

Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „De data aceasta soţul meu se va ataşa de mine, pentru că i-am născut trei fii.“ De aceea i-a pus numele Levi^[d].

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.^[e] Then she stopped having children.

Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „De data aceasta Îl voi lăuda pe Domnul!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Iuda^[e]. Apoi a încetat să mai aibă copii.
