Genesis 31

Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”

Iacov a auzit că fiii lui Laban ziceau: „Iacov a luat tot ce era al tatălui nostru; el a câştigat toată această bogăţie din averea tatălui nostru.“

And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.

Iacov a observat, de asemenea, că Laban nu-l mai privea cu bunăvoinţă, aşa cum o făcuse înainte.

Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

Atunci Domnul i-a zis lui Iacov: „Intoarce-te în ţara strămoşilor tăi, la rudele tale, iar Eu voi fi cu tine.“

So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were.

He said to them, “I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.

şi le-a zis:

– Văd că tatăl vostru nu mă mai priveşte cu bunăvoinţă, aşa cum a făcut-o înainte, dar Dumnezeul tatălui meu a fost cu mine.

You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,

Voi ştiţi că i-am slujit tatălui vostru cu toată puterea mea;

yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me.

totuşi tatăl vostru m-a înşelat şi mi-a schimbat plata de zece ori, dar Dumnezeu nu i-a permis să-mi facă rău.

If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked young.

Dacă el spunea: „Mieii pestriţi vor fi plata ta“, atunci toate oile fătau miei pestriţi; dacă el spunea: „Mieii vărgaţi vor fi plata ta“, atunci toate oile fătau miei vărgaţi.

So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me.

Astfel, Dumnezeu a luat turmele tatălui vostru şi mi le-a dat mie.

“In breeding season I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted.

Pe vremea când oile erau în călduri, am avut un vis în care am văzut că berbecii care săreau pe oi erau vărgaţi, pestriţi şi cu pete.

The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’

Apoi Îngerul lui Dumnezeu m-a chemat pe nume în vis. „Iată-mă!“ i-am răspuns eu.

And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.

El mi-a spus: „Ridică-ţi ochii şi priveşte că toţi berbecii care sar pe oi sunt vărgaţi, pestriţi şi cu pete, pentru că am văzut tot ceea ce ţi-a făcut Laban.

I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’”

Eu sunt Dumnezeul Betelului, unde ai uns un stâlp şi Mi-ai făcut un jurământ. Acum scoală-te, ieşi din această ţară şi întoarce-te în ţara ta natală.“

Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father’s estate?

Atunci Rahela şi Lea i-au răspuns:

– Mai este vreo parte de moştenire pentru noi în familia tatălui nostru?

Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.

Din moment ce ne-a vândut şi a şi folosit argintul luat pe noi, nu suntem văzute de către el ca nişte străine?

Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you.”

De fapt, toate bogăţiile pe care Dumnezeu le-a luat de la tatăl nostru ne aparţin nouă şi copiilor noştri; prin urmare fă tot ceea ce ţi-a spus Dumnezeu.

Then Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,

Iacov s-a sculat, şi-a pus copiii şi soţiile pe cămile

and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated in Paddan Aram,^[a] to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

şi şi-a luat toate turmele şi toate lucrurile pe care le-a acumulat în Padan-Aram, ca să meargă la tatăl său, Isaac, în Canaan.

When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods.

În timp ce Laban s-a dus să-şi tundă oile, Rahela a furat terafimii^[a] care-i aparţineau tatălui ei.

Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away.

Iacov l-a înşelat pe arameul Laban, pentru că nu i-a spus că pleacă.

So he fled with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

Astfel, el a fugit cu tot ce avea; s-a sculat, a trecut râul^[b] şi s-a îndreptat spre regiunea muntoasă a Ghiladului.

Laban îl urmăreşte pe Iacov

On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled.

După trei zile, lui Laban i s-a spus că Iacov a fugit.

Taking his relatives with him, he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

Atunci, Laban, însoţit de rudele sale, l-a urmărit pe Iacov timp de şapte zile şi l-a ajuns în regiunea muntoasă a Ghiladului.

Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”

Dar Dumnezeu i S-a arătat arameului Laban noaptea într-un vis şi i-a zis: „Ai grijă să nu-l ameninţi cu nimic pe Iacov^[c]!“

Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too.

Iacov îşi aşezase cortul în regiunea muntoasă a Ghiladului când l-a ajuns Laban, iar acesta şi-a aşezat tabăra împreună cu rudele sale tot acolo.

Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You’ve deceived me, and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.

Laban i-a zis lui Iacov:

– Ce-ai făcut? M-ai înşelat şi mi-ai luat fiicele ca pe nişte captive de război.

Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels and harps?

De ce ai fugit pe ascuns, de ce m-ai înşelat şi nu mi-ai spus nimic? Te-aş fi lăsat să pleci cu bucurie şi cu cântece de tamburină şi liră.

You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing.

Nu m-ai lăsat nici măcar să-mi sărut nepoţii şi fiicele?! Te-ai purtat nechibzuit.

I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Am putere să-ţi fac rău, dar Dumnezeul tatălui tău mi-a vorbit azi noapte, zicând: „Ai grijă să nu-l ameninţi cu nimic pe Iacov!“

Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household. But why did you steal my gods?”

Dar acum că ai plecat, pentru că ţi-era tare dor de familia tatălui tău, de ce mi-ai furat terafimii?

Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.

Iacov i-a răspuns lui Laban:

– Eu am plecat pentru că m-am temut gândindu-mă că îţi vei lua fiicele de la mine cu forţa.

But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

Dar cel la care-ţi vei găsi terafimii nu va rămâne în viaţă. Caută, înaintea rudelor noastre, ce ai la mine şi ia.

Iacov nu ştia însă că Rahela furase terafimii.

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent.

Laban a intrat în cortul lui Iacov, în cortul Leei şi în cortul celor două sclave, dar n-a găsit nimic. După ce a ieşit din cortul Leei, a intrat în cortul Rahelei.

Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel’s saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing.

Rahela luase terafimii, îi pusese sub şaua cămilei şi se aşezase deasupra lor. Laban a căutat peste tot în cort, dar nu i-a găsit.

Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I’m having my period.” So he searched but could not find the household gods.

Rahela i-a zis tatălui său: „Să nu se mânie stăpânul meu pe mine din cauză că nu mă pot ridica înaintea ta, pentru că mi-a venit rânduiala femeilor.“ El a căutat, dar nu a găsit terafimii.

Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged you that you hunt me down?

Atunci Iacov s-a mâniat şi l-a mustrat pe Laban, spunându-i:

– Care este greşeala mea? Care este păcatul meu, de m-ai urmărit cu atâta înverşunare?

Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.

Deşi ai căutat prin toate bunurile mele, ai găsit ceva care să aparţină gospodăriei tale? Pune-l aici, înaintea rudelor mele şi înaintea rudelor tale, pentru ca ele să judece între noi doi!

“I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.

Am stat la tine timp de douăzeci de ani; oile şi caprele tale au fătat la vreme, iar eu n-am mâncat berbeci din turma ta.

I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.

Nu ţi-am adus animale sfâşiate de fiare sălbatice, ci eu însumi sufeream pierderea; o cereai din mâna mea, fie că era furată ziua, fie noaptea.

This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

Ziua mă topeam de căldură, iar noaptea îngheţam de frig, astfel încât îmi pierea somnul.

It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.

Aşa am petrecut douăzeci de ani în gospodăria ta; ţi-am slujit paisprezece ani pentru cele două fiice ale tale şi şase ani pentru turma ta, dar tu mi-ai schimbat plata de zece ori.

If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you.”

Dacă Dumnezeul tatălui meu, Dumnezeul lui Avraam şi Cel de Care se teme Isaac, n-ar fi fost cu mine, cu siguranţă m-ai fi lăsat acum să plec cu mâinile goale. Dar Dumnezeu a văzut suferinţa mea şi truda mâinilor mele şi te-a mustrat azi noapte.

Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne?

Laban i-a răspuns lui Iacov:

– Fetele sunt fetele mele, copiii sunt copiii mei, turmele sunt turmele mele: tot ce vezi îmi aparţine. Dar ce pot face eu astăzi pentru aceste fete ale mele sau pentru copiii pe care ele i-au născut?

Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”

Haide să încheiem un legământ care să fie mărturie între mine şi tine.

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.

Astfel, Iacov a luat o piatră şi a aşezat-o în picioare.

He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.

Laban le-a zis rudelor sale: „Adunaţi nişte pietre“; ei au adunat nişte pietre, au făcut din ele o movilă şi au mâncat pe ea.

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.^[b]

Laban a numit-o Iegar-Sahaduta^[d], iar Iacov a numit-o Galed^[e].

Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” That is why it was called Galeed.

Laban a zis:

– Această movilă este astăzi martoră între mine şi tine.

De aceea a fost numită Galed.

It was also called Mizpah,^[c] because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.

Ea a mai fost numită şi Miţpa^[f], pentru că el a zis:

– Domnul să vegheze între mine şi tine chiar şi atunci când suntem departe unul de celălalt.

If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.”

Dacă te vei purta rău cu fiicele mele sau dacă îţi vei mai lua şi alte soţii pe lângă fiicele mele, deşi nimeni altcineva nu va fi cu noi, adu-ţi aminte că Dumnezeu este martor între mine şi tine.

Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me.

Laban i-a mai zis lui Iacov:

– Iată această movilă şi stâlpul pe care l-am aşezat între mine şi tine!

This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me.

Această movilă şi stâlpul sunt martori că nu voi trece de această movilă la tine, pentru ca să-ţi fac rău şi că nici tu nu vei trece de această movilă şi de acest stâlp la mine, pentru ca să-mi faci rău.

May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.”

So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.

Fie ca Dumnezeul lui Avraam şi Dumnezeul lui Nahor, Dumnezeul tatălui lor, să judece între noi.

Iacov a jurat pe Cel de Care se temea tatăl său, Isaac;

He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

apoi a adus o jertfă pe munte şi şi-a invitat rudele să mănânce; după ce au mâncat, au petrecut noaptea pe munte.

Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.^[d]

A doua zi, dimineaţa, Laban s-a sculat devreme, şi-a sărutat nepoţii şi fiicele şi i-a binecuvântat; apoi a plecat şi s-a întors acasă.
