Genesis 21

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.

Domnul a avut grijă de Sara, după cum a spus şi a făcut pentru ea ceea ce a promis.

Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

Sara a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Avraam un fiu la bătrâneţe, la vremea la care Dumnezeu îi spusese.

Abraham gave the name Isaac^[a] to the son Sarah bore him.

Avraam i-a pus fiului său, pe care i-l născuse Sara, numele Isaac^[a].

When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.

Avraam l-a circumcis pe fiul său Isaac la vârsta de opt zile, aşa cum i-a poruncit Dumnezeu.

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

Avraam avea o sută de ani când s-a născut fiul său Isaac.

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”

Sara a zis: „Dumnezeu m-a făcut să râd şi oricine va auzi despre acest lucru va râde împreună cu mine.

And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

Cine i-ar fi spus lui Avraam că Sara va alăpta copii? a continuat ea. Totuşi i-am născut un fiu la bătrâneţe.“

Alungarea lui Agar şi a lui Ismael

The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.

Copilul a crescut şi a fost înţărcat. În ziua în care Isaac a fost înţărcat, Avraam a dat un ospăţ mare.

But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,

Dar Sara l-a văzut pe fiul egiptencei Agar, pe care aceasta i-l născuse lui Avraam, bătându-şi joc^[b]

and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”

şi i-a spus lui Avraam: „Alung-o pe această sclavă şi pe fiul ei, pentru că fiul acestei sclave nu va moşteni împreună cu fiul meu Isaac!“

The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.

Acest lucru l-a tulburat mult pe Avraam, pentru că-l avea în vedere pe fiul său.

But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[b] will be reckoned.

Dar Dumnezeu i-a spus lui Avraam: „Nu fi tulburat din cauza băiatului şi a sclavei tale; ascult-o pe Sara în tot ce îţi spune, pentru că prin Isaac îşi va primi numele sămânţa^[c] ta.

I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”

Cât despre fiul sclavei tale, îl voi face şi pe el un neam, pentru că şi el este urmaşul tău.“

Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.

Avraam s-a sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, a luat nişte pâine şi un burduf cu apă şi i le-a dat lui Agar, punându-i-le pe umăr; i-a dat şi copilul şi a izgonit-o. Ea a plecat şi a rătăcit în pustia Beer-Şeba.

When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.

Când apa din burduf s-a terminat, Agar a pus copilul sub unul dintre tufişuri,

Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she^[c] began to sob.

apoi s-a dus şi a şezut singură mai departe, ca la o aruncătură de arc, pentru că se gândea: „Să nu văd moartea copilului.“ Şezând acolo, ea^[d] a început să plângă.

God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

Dumnezeu a auzit glasul copilului, iar Îngerul lui Dumnezeu a strigat-o pe Agar din cer şi i-a zis: „Ce se întâmplă, Agar? Nu te teme, pentru că Dumnezeu a auzit glasul băiatului din locul în care este.

Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

Scoală-te, ridică băiatul şi ţine-l de mână, pentru că voi face din el un neam mare.“

Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

Apoi Dumnezeu i-a deschis ochii, iar ea a văzut o fântână cu apă. S-a dus, a umplut burduful cu apă şi i-a dat băiatului să bea.

God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.

Dumnezeu a fost cu băiatul, iar el a crescut, a locuit în pustie şi a ajuns arcaş.

While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

The Treaty at Beersheba

A locuit în pustia Paran, iar mama lui i-a luat o soţie din ţara Egiptului.

Legământul dintre Avraam şi Abimelek

At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.

În vremea aceea, Abimelek, împreună cu Pihol, conducătorul oştirii sale, i-a spus lui Avraam:

– Dumnezeu este cu tine în tot ceea ce faci;

Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”

jură-mi acum pe Dumnezeul tău că nu mă vei înşela nici pe mine, nici pe copiii mei, nici pe urmaşii mei, ci că, aşa cum eu am arătat bunăvoinţă faţă de tine, tot aşa vei arăta şi tu faţă de mine şi faţă de ţara în care locuieşti ca străin.

Abraham said, “I swear it.”

– Jur, i-a răspuns Avraam.

Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.

Dar Avraam i s-a plâns lui Abimelek cu privire la o fântână cu apă, pe care slujitorii acestuia o luaseră în stăpânire.

But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”

Abimelek i-a răspuns: „Nu ştiu cine a făcut acest lucru. Tu nu mi-ai spus, iar eu nu am auzit despre aceasta până acum.“

So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.

Atunci Avraam a luat oi şi boi şi i le-a dat lui Abimelek; apoi cei doi au încheiat un legământ.

Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,

Avraam a pus deoparte şapte mieluşele din turmă,

and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”

iar Abimelek l-a întrebat:

– Ce ai de gând să faci cu aceste şapte mieluşele pe care le-ai pus deoparte?

He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well.”

– Primeşte-le ca o mărturie pentru mine că eu am săpat această fântână, i-a răspuns Avraam.

So that place was called Beersheba,^[d] because the two men swore an oath there.

De aceea acel loc a fost numit Beer-Şeba^[e], pentru că amândoi au depus acolo un jurământ.

After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.

După ce au încheiat legământul la Beer-Şeba, Abimelek şi Pihol, conducătorul oştiri sale, s-au sculat şi s-au întors în ţara filistenilor.

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.

Avraam a plantat un tamarisc în Beer-Şeba şi a chemat acolo Numele Domnului, Dumnezeul cel Veşnic^[f].

And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.

El a locuit ca străin în ţara filistenilor multă vreme.
