Genesis 11

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

Tot pământul vorbea o singură limbă şi folosea aceleaşi cuvinte.

As people moved eastward,^[a] they found a plain in Shinar^[b] and settled there.

Venind dinspre răsărit^[a], oamenii au găsit o câmpie în ţara Şinar^[b] şi s-au aşezat acolo.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

Ei şi-au spus unul altuia: „Haideţi să facem cărămizi şi să le ardem bine.“ Ei foloseau cărămizi în loc de pietre şi smoală în loc de mortar.

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

Apoi au zis: „Haidem să ne construim o cetate şi un turn cu vârful până la cer şi să ne facem un nume, altfel vom fi împrăştiaţi pe tot pământul.“

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.

Domnul S-a coborât să vadă cetatea şi turnul pe care oamenii le construiau.

The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

Domnul a zis: „Ei sunt un singur popor, toţi au aceeaşi limbă, iar acesta este doar începutul a ceea ce vor să facă; nimic din ceea ce şi-au propus să facă nu va fi imposibil pentru ei.

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

Haidem să Ne coborâm şi să le încurcăm acolo limba, pentru ca ei să nu-şi mai înţeleagă limba unul altuia.“

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

Astfel, Domnul i-a împrăştiat de acolo pe tot pământul, iar ei au încetat să mai construiască cetatea.

That is why it was called Babel^[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

From Shem to Abram

De aceea cetatea a fost numită Babel^[c], pentru că acolo Domnul a încurcat limba întregului pământ şi apoi i-a împrăştiat pe tot pământul.

Urmaşii lui Sem până la Avram

This is the account of Shem’s family line.

Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father^[d] of Arphaxad.

Aceasta este genealogia^[d] lui Sem.

This is the account of Terah’s family line.

Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.

Aceasta este genealogia^[f] lui Terah: Terah a fost tatăl lui Avram, Nahor şi Haran. Haran a fost tatăl lui Lot.

While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.

Haran a murit înaintea tatălui său, Terah, în ţara în care s-a născut, în Ur din Caldeea.

Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah.

Avram şi Nahor şi-au luat soţii. Numele soţiei lui Avram era Sarai, iar numele soţiei lui Nahor era Milca. Ea era fiica lui Haran, tatăl Milcăi şi al Iscăi.

Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.

Sarai era stearpă; ea nu avea copii.

Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there.

Terah i-a luat pe fiul său Avram şi pe nepotul său Lot, fiul lui Haran, precum şi pe Sarai, nora sa şi soţia fiului său Avram, şi au ieşit împreună din Ur, din Caldeea, ca să meargă în Canaan; dar când au ajuns în Haran, s-au aşezat acolo.

Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.

Terah a trăit două sute cinci ani, apoi a murit în Haran.
