Genesis 22

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

こののち、神はアブラハムの信仰と従順を試しました。

「アブラハム。」

「はい、神様。」

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

「あなたのひとり息子を連れてモリヤへ行きなさい。そう、愛するイサクを連れて行くのだ。そして、わたしが指定する山の上で、完全に焼き尽くすいけにえとしてイサクをささげなさい。」

Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.

アブラハムは明くる朝早く起きると、祭壇で燃やすたきぎを作り、ろばに鞍をつけて出かけました。息子イサクと若い召使二人もいっしょです。

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

三日目、指定された場所が遠くに見える所まで来ました。

He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

「おまえたち二人は、ろばとここで待っていなさい。わしと息子はあそこへ行き、礼拝してすぐに戻って来るから」と、アブラハムは召使に言いました。

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,

アブラハムは、完全に焼き尽くすいけにえ用のたきぎをイサクに背負わせ、自分は刀と火打ち石を持ちました。二人はいっしょに歩いて行きました。

Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

「お父さん、たきぎもあるし、火打ち石もあるけれど、いけにえにする子羊はどこ？」

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

「わが子イサク、大丈夫だ。神様がちゃんと用意してくださるよ。」二人はどんどん先へ進みました。

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

やがて、命じられた場所に着きました。アブラハムはさっそく祭壇を築き、たきぎを並べました。あとは火をつけるばかりです。いよいよイサクをささげる時がきたのです。イサクを縛り上げ、祭壇のたきぎの上に横たえました。

Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

アブラハムは刀をしっかりと握りしめ、その手を頭上高く振りかざしました。その時です。息子の心臓めがけて刀を振り下ろそうとした、まさにその時、主の使いの声が天から響きました。

「アブラハム！　アブラハム！」

「はい、神様。」

But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

「刀を置きなさい。その子に手をかけてはならない。もうわかった。おまえが何よりも神を第一としていることが、よくわかった。最愛の息子でさえ、ささげようとしたのだから。」

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram^[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

こう言われてふと見ると、雄羊が一頭、木の枝に角を引っかけて、もがいているではありませんか。「これこそ神様が用意してくださったいけにえだ。」そう思ったアブラハムは羊を捕まえ、息子の代わりに、完全に焼き尽くすいけにえとしてささげました。

So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

このことがあってから、アブラハムはそこをアドナイ・イルエ〔「神は用意してくださる」の意〕と呼びました。現在でも、そう呼ばれています。

The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time

このあと、主の使いがもう一度アブラハムに、天から呼びかけました。

and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

「あなたはよくわたしの言うことを聞いた。愛する息子をさえ惜しまずに、わたしにささげようとしたのだ。神であるわたしは誓う。

I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,

想像もできないほどあなたを祝福し、子孫を増やそう。空の星、海辺の砂のように、数えきれないほど大ぜいに。あなたの子孫は敵を征服し、

and through your offspring^[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[c] because you have obeyed me.”

世界中の国々に祝福をもたらす。それはみな、あなたがわたしの言うことに従ったからだ。」

Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Nahor’s Sons

こうして二人は召使のところへ戻り、ベエル・シェバにある自分たちの家へ向かいました。

ナホルの息子たち

Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

このあと、兄弟ナホルの妻ミルカにも子どもが八人生まれたという便りが、アブラハムに届きました。子どもたちの名前は次のとおりです。長男ウツ、次男ブズ、アラムの父ケムエル、ケセデ、ハゾ、ピルダシュ、イデラフ、それに、リベカの父ベトエル。

Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”

Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.

His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

ナホルにはまた、レウマというそばめの子が四人いました。テバフ、ガハム、タハシュ、マアカです。
