After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”

После смерти Иешуа исраильтяне спросили Вечного^[a]:

– Кому из нас первым идти воевать с хананеями?

The Lord answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”

Вечный ответил:

– Первым пусть идёт Иуда. Я отдаю землю в его руки.

The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them.

Тогда воины Иуды сказали своим братьям шимонитам:

– Идите с нами в землю, которая нам досталась, воевать с хананеями. А потом мы, в свой черёд, пойдём с вами в вашу землю.

И шимониты пошли с ними.

When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.

Когда Иуда со своими людьми вышел на бой, Вечный отдал хананеев и перизеев в их руки, и они сразили в Везеке десять тысяч человек.

It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.

Там они и нашли царя Адони-Везека, сразились с ним и разбили хананеев и перизеев.

Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

Адони-Везек бежал, но они погнались за ним, схватили его и отрубили ему большие пальцы на руках и на ногах.

Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Адони-Везек сказал:

– Семьдесят царей с отрубленными большими пальцами на руках и на ногах собирали крохи под моим столом. Теперь Всевышний воздал мне за то, что я сделал.

Его отвели в Иерусалим, где он и умер.

The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.

Воины Иуды напали на Иерусалим и взяли город. Они предали город мечу и огню.

After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills.

После этого воины Иуды отправились на битву с хананеями, которые жили в нагорьях, в Негеве и в западных предгорьях.

They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.

Они выступили против хананеев Хеврона (прежде он назывался Кириат-Арба) и разбили Шешая, Ахимана и Талмая^[b].

From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).

Оттуда они пошли на жителей Девира (который прежде назывался Кириат-Сефер).

And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.”

Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

Отниил, сын Кеназа, младшего брата Халева, взял город, и Халев отдал ему в жёны свою дочь Ахсу.

One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him^[a] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”

Однажды, по дороге к отцу, она получила разрешение Отниила попросить у её отца поле. Когда она слезла со своего осла, Халев спросил её:

– Чего ты хочешь?

She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

Она ответила:

– Окажи мне особую милость. Ты дал мне землю в Негеве – так дай мне и источники воды.

И Халев дал ей верхние и нижние источники.

The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms^[b] with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

Потомки тестя Мусы, кенея, пошли с народом Иуды из города Иерихона^[c] в Иудейскую пустыню, что в Негеве, рядом с городом Арадом, и поселились среди народа.

Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed^[c] the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.^[d]

Воины Иуды пошли со своими братьями шимонитами, напали на хананеев, которые жили в Цефате, и полностью уничтожили город. Поэтому он получил название Хорма («уничтожение»).

Judah also took^[e] Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory.

Ещё воины Иуды взяли города Газу, Ашкелон и Экрон с их окрестностями.

The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.

Вечный был с воинами Иуды. Они овладели нагорьями, но не смогли прогнать жителей равнин, потому что у тех были железные колесницы.

As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.

Как и обещал Муса, Хеврон был отдан Халеву, который прогнал оттуда троих анакитов.

The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.

Вениамитяне не смогли выселить иевусеев, которые жили в Иерусалиме. Иевусеи живут там с вениамитянами до сегодняшнего дня.

Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

Потомки Юсуфа напали на Вефиль, и Вечный был с ними.

When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),

the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.”

лазутчики увидели мужчину, выходящего из города, и сказали ему:

– Покажи нам, как попасть в город, и мы не причиним тебе вреда.

So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.

Он показал им, и они предали город мечу, но пощадили того человека и всю его семью.

He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.

Этот человек пошёл в землю хеттов, где построил город, который назвал Луз. Так он называется и до сегодняшнего дня.

But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.

Но Манасса не прогнал жителей Бет-Шеана, Таанаха, Дора, Ивлеама и Мегиддо, а также их окрестных поселений; и хананеи продолжали жить на этой земле.

When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.

Когда Исраил окреп, они сделали хананеев подневольными, но не изгнали их полностью.

Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.

И Ефраим не прогнал хананеев, которые жили в Гезере, и хананеи продолжали жить там среди них.

Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.

И Завулон не прогнал хананеев, живших в Китроне и в Нахалоле, которые остались среди них, но сделались подневольными.

Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.

И Ашир не изгнал жителей Акко, Сидона, Ахлава, Ахзива, Хелбы, Афека и Рехова,

The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.

и поэтому народ Ашира жил среди хананеев, обитателей той земли.

Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.

И Неффалим не прогнал жителей Бет-Шемеша и Бет-Аната: неффалимиты жили среди хананеев, обитателей той земли, а жителей Бет-Шемеша и Бет-Аната сделали подневольными.

The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.

Данитянам аморреи отрезали путь с нагорий на равнину.

And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.

Аморреи продолжали жить на горе Херес, в Аялоне и в Шаалбиме, но когда сила потомков Юсуфа возросла, они тоже стали подневольными.

The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.

Граница аморреев шла от Скорпионовой возвышенности^[d], от Селы и далее.
