Job 28

There is a mine for silver
    and a place where gold is refined.

– Есть рудник для серебра,
    и для золота есть горн плавильный.

Iron is taken from the earth,
    and copper is smelted from ore.

Из земли добывают железо,
    и плавят медь из руды.

Mortals put an end to the darkness;
    they search out the farthest recesses
    for ore in the blackest darkness.

Рудокоп освещает тьму,
    ищет он в отдалённых пределах
    руду в непроглядной мгле.

Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,
    in places untouched by human feet;
    far from other people they dangle and sway.

Далеко от жилья он роет колодец,
    в местах, позабытых человеком;
    вдали от всех висит он, покачиваясь.

The earth, from which food comes,
    is transformed below as by fire;

Земля, которая произращает хлеб,
    изнутри изрыта, будто огнём.

lapis lazuli comes from its rocks,
    and its dust contains nuggets of gold.

Сапфиров россыпь в её камнях,
    и в ней – золотой песок.

No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
    no falcon’s eye has seen it.

Пути к ним не знает хищная птица,
    соколиный глаз их не видел.

Proud beasts do not set foot on it,
    and no lion prowls there.

Дикие звери их не топтали,
    и лев по ним не ходил.

People assault the flinty rock with their hands
    and lay bare the roots of the mountains.

Человек на гранит поднимает руку
    и с корнем вырывает горы.

They tunnel through the rock;
    their eyes see all its treasures.

Он прорубает проходы в скалах,
    и глаза его видят все их сокровища.

They search^[a] the sources of the rivers
    and bring hidden things to light.

Он ищет^[a] истоки рек
    и сокровенное выносит на свет.

But where can wisdom be found?
    Where does understanding dwell?

Но где можно найти мудрость?
    Где обитает разум?

No mortal comprehends its worth;
    it cannot be found in the land of the living.

Не знает смертный её дома^[b];
    на земле живых её не найти.

The deep says, “It is not in me”;
    the sea says, “It is not with me.”

Пучина скажет: «Во мне её нет»,
    и молвит море: «Не у меня она».

It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
    nor can its price be weighed out in silver.

Её не купить за червонное золото,
    не отвесить цену её серебром.

It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,
    with precious onyx or lapis lazuli.

Не купить её ни за золото из Офира,
    ни за драгоценный оникс или сапфир.

Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,
    nor can it be had for jewels of gold.

Не сравнить её с золотом и кристаллом,
    на утварь из чистого золота не обменять.

Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention;
    the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

А о кораллах и яшме нечего и говорить;
    стоит мудрость дороже рубинов.

The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it;
    it cannot be bought with pure gold.

Не сравнить с ней топазы из Эфиопии,
    не купить её за отменное золото.

Where then does wisdom come from?
    Where does understanding dwell?

Откуда приходит мудрость?
    Где обитает разум?

It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
    concealed even from the birds in the sky.

Скрыта она от глаз всех живущих
    и от птиц небесных утаена.

Destruction^[b] and Death say,
    “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”

Мир мёртвых и царство смерти говорят:
    «Мы слышали только слух о ней».

God understands the way to it
    and he alone knows where it dwells,

Только Всевышнему ведом к ней путь,
    Он знает её жилище,

for he views the ends of the earth
    and sees everything under the heavens.

ведь Он озирает края земли
    и видит всё, что под небесами.

When he established the force of the wind
    and measured out the waters,

Когда Он давал ветру силу
    и водам ставил пределы,

when he made a decree for the rain
    and a path for the thunderstorm,

когда Он дождю предписал устав
    и путь проложил для молний,

then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
    he confirmed it and tested it.

Он увидел мудрость и восхвалил её,
    утвердил её, испытал

And he said to the human race,
    “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
    and to shun evil is understanding.”
