“How I long for the months gone by,
    for the days when God watched over me,

– Как я томлюсь по прошедшим месяцам,
    по тем дням, когда Всевышний хранил меня,

when his lamp shone on my head
    and by his light I walked through darkness!

и светильник Его сиял над моей головой,
    и при свете Его я шёл сквозь тьму!

Oh, for the days when I was in my prime,
    when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house,

О, это были мои лучшие годы,
    когда совет Всевышнего хранил мой шатёр,

when the Almighty was still with me
    and my children were around me,

когда Всемогущий ещё был со мной,
    а дети – вокруг меня,

when my path was drenched with cream
    and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil.

когда омывался мой путь молоком,
    и скала источала для меня оливковое масло.

“When I went to the gate of the city
    and took my seat in the public square,

Выходил ли я к городским воротам
    и садился ли на площади,

the young men saw me and stepped aside
    and the old men rose to their feet;

меня завидев, юноши отступали,
    и поднимались старцы;

the chief men refrained from speaking
    and covered their mouths with their hands;

властители удерживались от слов
    и прикрывали рты руками;

the voices of the nobles were hushed,
    and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

голоса знатных стихали,
    прилипали у них языки к нёбу.

Whoever heard me spoke well of me,
    and those who saw me commended me,

Кто меня слышал, превозносил меня,
    кто меня видел, меня хвалил,

because I rescued the poor who cried for help,
    and the fatherless who had none to assist them.

ведь я спасал плачущего бедняка
    и беспомощного сироту.

The one who was dying blessed me;
    I made the widow’s heart sing.

Умирающий благословлял меня,
    и сердце вдовы наполнял я радостной песней.

I put on righteousness as my clothing;
    justice was my robe and my turban.

Я надевал праведность, как одежду,
    справедливость – как мантию и тюрбан.

I was eyes to the blind
    and feet to the lame.

Слепому я был глазами
    и хромому – ногами.

I was a father to the needy;
    I took up the case of the stranger.

Я был отцом для бедняков;
    я разбирал дело странника.

I broke the fangs of the wicked
    and snatched the victims from their teeth.

Я сокрушал челюсти беззаконных
    и спасал жертвы из их зубов.

“I thought, ‘I will die in my own house,
    my days as numerous as the grains of sand.

Я думал: «Скончаюсь в своём гнезде,
    и дни мои будут многочисленны, как песок.

My roots will reach to the water,
    and the dew will lie all night on my branches.

Как дерево, чьи корни достигают воды,
    на чьи ветви ложится роса,

My glory will not fade;
    the bow will be ever new in my hand.’

не увядает слава моя,
    и крепко рука моя держит лук».

“People listened to me expectantly,
    waiting in silence for my counsel.

Внимали мне, ожидали меня,
    в молчании слушали мой совет.

After I had spoken, they spoke no more;
    my words fell gently on their ears.

Когда замолкал я, больше не говорили;
    ложились слова мои, как роса.

They waited for me as for showers
    and drank in my words as the spring rain.

Ждали меня, как дождя,
    и слова мои пили, как ливень весенний.

When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it;
    the light of my face was precious to them.^[a]

Не могли поверить, если я им улыбался,
    света лица моего они не помрачали.

I chose the way for them and sat as their chief;
    I dwelt as a king among his troops;
    I was like one who comforts mourners.
