Genesis 37

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

Jacob s’établit au pays de Canaan où son père avait séjourné.

This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

Voici l’histoire de la famille de Jacob. Joseph, âgé de dix-sept ans, gardait les moutons et les chèvres avec ses frères. Il avait passé son enfance avec les fils de Bilha et de Zilpa, femmes de son père. Il rapportait à leur père leurs mauvais propos.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate^[a] robe for him.

Israël aimait Joseph beaucoup plus que tous ses autres fils, car il l’avait eu dans sa vieillesse. Il lui fit une tunique splendide^[a].

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Ses frères virent que leur père le préférait à eux tous ; alors ils le prirent en haine, et ils ne pouvaient plus lui parler aimablement.

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

Joseph fit un rêve et le raconta à ses frères, qui ne l’en détestèrent que davantage.

He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had:

Il leur dit, en effet : Ecoutez, je vous prie, ce songe que j’ai eu.

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

Nous étions en train de lier des gerbes dans les champs. Soudain, ma gerbe s’est dressée et s’est tenue debout ; les vôtres se sont placées autour d’elle et se sont prosternées devant elle^[b].

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Ses frères lui dirent : Prétendrais-tu devenir notre roi et nous gouverner ? Et ils le détestèrent de plus belle à cause de ses songes et de ses propos.

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

Il eut encore un autre rêve qu’il raconta également à ses frères : Voici, leur dit-il, j’ai encore fait un rêve. J’ai vu le soleil, la lune et onze étoiles se prosterner devant moi.

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”

Quand il raconta ce rêve à son père et à ses frères, son père le réprimanda et lui dit : Qu’as-tu rêvé là ? T’imagines-tu que moi, ta mère et tes frères, nous allons nous prosterner en terre devant toi ?

His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

Ses frères étaient jaloux de lui : mais son père garda la chose en mémoire^[c].

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,

Les frères de Joseph allèrent faire paître les troupeaux de leur père dans la région de Sichem.

and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

Israël dit à Joseph : Tes frères font paître les troupeaux à Sichem^[d] ; va, je veux t’envoyer vers eux.

Joseph répondit : J’y vais.

So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

Son père lui dit : Va voir comment se portent tes frères et comment vont les troupeaux. Tu m’en rapporteras des nouvelles.

Il l’envoya donc depuis la vallée d’Hébron et Joseph se rendit à Sichem.

a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

Un homme l’y rencontra, alors qu’il errait dans la campagne. Il lui demanda : Que cherches-tu ?

He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

– Je cherche mes frères, lui dit-il, peux-tu me dire où ils font paître leurs troupeaux ?

“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

– Ils sont partis d’ici, lui répondit l’homme, et je les ai entendus dire : « Allons vers Dotân^[e]. »

Joseph partit donc à la recherche de ses frères et les trouva à Dotân.

But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

Ceux-ci l’aperçurent de loin. Avant qu’il ne soit près d’eux, ils complotèrent de le faire mourir.

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.

– Voilà le maître-rêveur qui arrive, se dirent-ils les uns aux autres.

“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

C’est le moment ! Allez, tuons-le et jetons-le dans une citerne^[f], nous dirons qu’une bête féroce l’a dévoré. On verra bien alors ce qu’il advient de ses rêves !

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.

Lorsqu’il entendit cela, Ruben chercha à sauver Joseph. Il dit : Ne portons pas atteinte à sa vie !

“Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

Il ajouta : Ne répandez pas le sang ! Jetez-le dans cette citerne qui se trouve dans le désert, mais ne portez pas la main sur lui !

Il avait l’intention de le sauver pour le renvoyer à son père.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—

Dès que Joseph eut rejoint ses frères, ils le dépouillèrent de sa tunique, cette tunique splendide qu’il portait.

and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

Ils se saisirent de lui et le jetèrent au fond de la citerne. Elle était vide ; il n’y avait pas d’eau dedans^[g].

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

Puis ils s’assirent pour manger. En regardant au loin, ils aperçurent une caravane d’Ismaélites venant de la région de Galaad et dont les chameaux étaient chargés de gomme, de baume et de myrrhe, qu’ils transportaient en Egypte.

Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

Alors Juda dit à ses frères : Quel intérêt avons-nous à tuer notre frère et à cacher sa mort ?

Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

Vendons-le plutôt aux Ismaélites. Ne portons pas la main sur lui, car c’est notre frère, il est de même sang que nous.

Ses frères furent d’accord

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels^[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

et, lorsque les marchands madianites passèrent, ils hissèrent Joseph hors de la citerne et le vendirent aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent. Ceux-ci l’emmenèrent en Egypte.

Jacob pleure Joseph

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

Quand Ruben retourna à la citerne, il n’y trouva plus Joseph. Alors il déchira ses vêtements en signe de désespoir,

He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

il alla trouver ses frères et leur dit : Le garçon n’y est plus ! Que vais-je faire maintenant ?

Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

Alors ils égorgèrent un bouc, prirent la tunique de Joseph et la trempèrent dans le sang du bouc.

They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

Ils envoyèrent la tunique splendide à leur père en disant : Voici ce que nous avons trouvé. Reconnais-tu ou non la tunique de ton fils ?

He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

Jacob la reconnut et s’écria : La tunique de mon fils ! Une bête féroce l’a dévoré ! Joseph a été mis en pièces !

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

Alors il déchira ses vêtements et mit un tissu de sac sur ses reins. Il porta longtemps le deuil de son fils.

All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

Tous ses fils et toutes ses filles vinrent pour le consoler ; mais il refusa toute consolation et dit : Non ! c’est dans le deuil que je rejoindrai mon fils au séjour des morts !

Et il continua à pleurer Joseph.

Meanwhile, the Midianites^[c] sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

Les Madianites vendirent^[h] Joseph en Egypte à Potiphar, un haut fonctionnaire du pharaon, chef de la garde royale.
