Genesis 38

At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

A la même époque, Juda se sépara de ses frères et alla vivre près d’un habitant d’Adoullam^[a] nommé Hira.

There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her;

Il vit là la fille d’un Cananéen nommé Shoua, il l’épousa et s’unit à elle.

she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.

Elle devint enceinte et lui donna un fils : il l’appela Er.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.

Elle devint encore enceinte et mit au monde un fils qu’elle appela Onân.

She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

Elle eut encore un fils qu’elle appela Shéla. Quand sa femme accoucha du troisième, Juda se trouvait à Kezib.

Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

Juda prit pour Er, son premier-né, une femme nommée Tamar.

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

Jugeant Er mauvais, l’Eternel le fit mourir.

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”

Alors Juda dit à Onân : Accomplis ton devoir de proche parent du défunt : unis-toi à ta belle-sœur pour donner une descendance à ton frère^[b].

But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.

Onân savait que les enfants qui naîtraient ne seraient pas pour lui. Chaque fois qu’il avait des rapports avec sa belle-sœur, il laissait tomber sa semence à terre pour éviter de donner une descendance à son frère.

What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

Son comportement déplut à l’Eternel qui le fit aussi mourir.

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.

Alors Juda dit à Tamar, sa belle-fille : Reste veuve dans la maison de ton père jusqu’à ce que mon fils Shéla soit devenu adulte.

Car il se disait : Il ne faut pas que celui-ci aussi meure comme ses frères.

Tamar retourna donc dans la maison de son père et y resta.

After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

Bien longtemps après cela, la fille de Shoua, femme de Juda, mourut. Quand il fut consolé, Juda monta avec son ami Hira l’Adoullamite à Timna, pour la tonte de ses moutons.

When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”

Quelqu’un en informa Tamar en lui disant : Voici, ton beau-père monte à Timna pour la tonte de ses moutons.

she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

Alors elle ôta ses habits de veuve, se couvrit le visage d’un voile et, ainsi déguisée, s’assit au carrefour d’Enaïm, sur la route de Timna ; car elle voyait bien que Shéla était devenu adulte sans qu’on le lui ait donné pour mari.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

Juda aperçut cette femme et la prit pour une prostituée, car elle avait le visage voilé.

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”

“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.

Il s’approcha d’elle au bord du chemin et lui dit : Permets-moi d’aller avec toi !

Car il n’avait pas reconnu sa belle-fille. Elle répondit : Que me donneras-tu pour venir avec moi ?

“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.

– Je te ferai apporter un chevreau du troupeau, lui dit-il.

– D’accord, répondit-elle, à condition que tu me donnes un gage jusqu’à ce que tu l’envoies.

He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

– Quel gage veux-tu que je te donne ?

– Ton cachet, le cordon qui le tient et le bâton que tu as en main.

Il les lui remit et s’unit à elle, et elle devint enceinte.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.

Elle se leva et partit ; elle ôta son voile et remit ses habits de veuve.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

Juda chargea son ami l’Adoullamite d’apporter le chevreau à cette femme et de retirer les gages qu’il lui avait donnés. Mais celle-ci resta introuvable.

He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”

“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.

Hira interrogea les hommes de l’endroit : Où est cette prostituée sacrée qui se tenait sur le chemin à Enaïm ?

Ils lui répondirent : Il n’y a jamais eu de prostituée sacrée à cet endroit.

So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”

Il revint dire à Juda : Je ne l’ai pas trouvée, et les gens de là-bas ont même affirmé qu’il n’y a jamais eu de prostituée sacrée à cet endroit.

Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”

Alors Juda s’écria : Qu’elle garde ce qu’elle a ! Ne nous rendons pas ridicules. Quoi qu’il arrive, moi j’ai envoyé ce chevreau, et toi, tu n’as pas retrouvé cette femme.

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

Environ trois mois après cela, on vint dire à Juda : Tamar, ta belle-fille, s’est prostituée, et même : la voilà enceinte suite à cela.

– Qu’on la fasse sortir, dit-il, et qu’elle soit brûlée vive !

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”

Comme on la jetait dehors, elle envoya un message à son beau-père : C’est de l’homme à qui appartiennent ces objets que je suis enceinte. Reconnais, je te prie, à qui sont ce cachet, ces cordons et ce bâton.

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.

Juda les reconnut et s’écria : Elle est plus juste que moi ; elle a fait cela parce que je ne l’ai pas donnée pour femme à mon fils Shéla.

Il ne s’unit plus jamais à elle.

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.

Quand vint le moment de la naissance, il s’avéra qu’elle portait des jumeaux.

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.”

Pendant l’accouchement l’un d’eux présenta une main ; la sage-femme la saisit et y noua un fil rouge en disant : C’est celui-ci qui sort le premier.

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.^[a]

Mais il retira sa main, et c’est son frère qui vint au monde. La sage-femme s’écria : Quelle brèche ne t’es-tu pas ouverte ! Et on le nomma Pérets^[c] (Brèche).

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.^[b]

Ensuite son frère naquit, celui dont la main portait le fil rouge, et il fut appelé Zérah (Lever de soleil).
