Genesis 16

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;

Saraï, l’épouse d’Abram, ne lui avait pas donné d’enfant. Mais elle avait une esclave égyptienne nommée Agar.

so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”

Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

Elle dit à Abram : Tu vois que l’Eternel m’a empêchée d’avoir des enfants^[a]. Va donc vers ma servante : peut-être aurai-je un fils par son intermédiaire.

Abram suivit le conseil de sa femme.

So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

Saraï, femme d’Abram, prit donc sa servante Agar et la donna pour femme à Abram, son mari. Il y avait alors dix ans qu’Abram séjournait au pays de Canaan.

He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

Il s’unit à Agar et elle devint enceinte.

Quand elle vit qu’elle attendait un enfant, elle se mit à mépriser sa maîtresse.

Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”

Alors Saraï dit à Abram : C’est toi qui es responsable de l’injure qui m’est faite. J’ai poussé ma servante dans tes bras et depuis qu’elle s’est vue enceinte, elle me méprise. Que l’Eternel soit juge entre nous.

“Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

Abram lui répondit : Ta servante est en ton pouvoir. Agis envers elle comme bon te semblera.

Alors Saraï la traita si durement que celle-ci s’enfuit.

The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

L’ange de l’Eternel la rencontra près d’une source d’eau dans le désert, celle qui se trouve sur le chemin de Shour.

And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

Il lui demanda : Agar, servante de Saraï, d’où viens-tu et où vas-tu ?

Elle répondit : Je m’enfuis de chez Saraï, ma maîtresse.

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”

L’ange de l’Eternel lui dit : Retourne auprès de ta maîtresse et humilie-toi devant elle.

The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

Et il ajouta : Je te donnerai de très nombreux descendants ; ils seront si nombreux qu’on ne pourra pas les compter^[b].

The angel of the Lord also said to her:

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen^[c] the One who sees me.”

Agar se demanda : Ai-je réellement vu ici même celui qui me voit ?

Et elle appela l’Eternel qui lui avait parlé du nom de Atta-El-Roï (C’est toi le Dieu qui me voit).

That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi^[d]; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

C’est pourquoi on appelle ce puits : Beer-Lachaï-Roï (le Puits du Vivant-qui-me-voit). Il se trouve entre Qadesh et Béred.

So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.

Agar donna le jour à un fils que son père appela Ismaël.

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

Abram avait quatre-vingt-six ans quand Agar lui donna ce fils.
