The territory of the sons of Dan [b]went beyond these; so the sons of Dan went up to fight against Leshem (Laish) and captured it. Then they struck it with the edge of the sword and took possession of it and settled there [between the tribes of Naphtali and Manasseh]; they [c]renamed Leshem, Dan, after the name of their father (ancestor) Dan.

And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

But the people of Dan failed to get rid of the Westerners (Amorites), who pushed them back into the hills. The Westerners kept them out of the plain and they didn’t have enough room. So the people of Dan marched up and attacked Leshem. They took it, killed the inhabitants, and settled in. They renamed it Leshem Dan after the name of Dan their ancestor.

Însă daniţii n-au reuşit să intre în posesia teritoriului lor, astfel că au pornit să lupte împotriva Leşemului: au atacat cetatea, au capturat-o, au trecut-o prin ascuţişul sabiei şi au ocupat-o. S-au stabilit în cetate şi au numit-o Dan, după numele strămoşului lor, Dan.
