Genesis 42

When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”

ฝ่ายยาโคบทราบมาว่ามีข้าวที่อียิปต์ จึงพูดกับลูกๆ ว่า “มานั่งมองหน้ากันอยู่ทำไม?

He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

พ่อได้ยินว่าที่อียิปต์มีข้าว พวกเจ้าจงลงไปที่นั่นและซื้อมาให้พวกเรา เพื่อเราจะไม่อดตาย”

Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

ดังนั้นพี่ชายทั้งสิบคนของโยเซฟจึงเดินทางลงไปอียิปต์เพื่อซื้อข้าว

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.

แต่ยาโคบไม่ยอมให้เบนยามินน้องชายของโยเซฟไปกับคนอื่นๆ ด้วย เพราะเกรงว่าอาจจะเกิดอันตรายแก่เขา

So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.

ดังนั้นบรรดาบุตรชายของอิสราเอลจึงร่วมเดินทางไปซื้อข้าวพร้อมกับคนอื่นๆ เพราะที่คานาอันก็กันดารอาหารเช่นกัน

Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the person who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

ขณะนั้นโยเซฟเป็นผู้ว่าราชการแผ่นดินมีหน้าที่ขายข้าวให้กับประชาชนทุกคน ดังนั้นเมื่อพวกพี่ชายของโยเซฟมาถึง พวกเขาจึงน้อมคำนับโยเซฟซบหน้าลงกับดิน

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

โยเซฟเห็นพวกพี่ๆ ก็จำได้ทันที แต่เขาแสร้งทำเป็นไม่รู้จักและพูดจาหาเรื่องพวกเขา เขาถามว่า “พวกเจ้ามาจากที่ไหน?”

พวกเขาตอบว่า “จากดินแดนคานาอันเพื่อซื้อข้าว”

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

แม้โยเซฟจะจำพวกพี่ชายของเขาได้ แต่พวกเขาจำโยเซฟไม่ได้

Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

แล้วโยเซฟก็หวนรำลึกถึงความฝันในอดีตและพูดกับพวกเขาว่า “พวกเจ้าเป็นสายลับ! พวกเจ้าเข้ามาดูว่าดินแดนของเรามีจุดอ่อนตรงไหน”

“No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.

พวกเขาตอบว่า “ไม่ใช่นายท่าน ผู้รับใช้ของท่านมาเพื่อซื้ออาหาร

We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”

เราทุกคนเป็นพี่น้องพ่อเดียวกัน ผู้รับใช้ของท่านเป็นคนสุจริต ไม่ใช่สายลับ”

“No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

โยเซฟยืนกรานว่า “ไม่จริง! พวกเจ้าเข้ามาดูว่าดินแดนของเรามีจุดอ่อนตรงไหน”

But they replied, “Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

แต่พวกเขาตอบว่า “ท่านขอรับ เรามีด้วยกันสิบสองคนพี่น้องพ่อเดียวกัน พ่อของเราอยู่ในดินแดนคานาอัน น้องคนสุดท้องก็อยู่กับท่าน ส่วนน้องอีกคนหนึ่งจากไปแล้ว”

Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!

โยเซฟกล่าวกับพวกเขาว่า “อย่างที่เราบอกเจ้านั่นแหละ พวกเจ้าเป็นสายลับ!

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.

นี่เป็นวิธีที่จะทดสอบคำพูดของพวกเจ้าคือ ฟาโรห์ทรงพระชนม์อยู่แน่ฉันใด พวกเจ้าจะกลับออกไปจากที่นี่ไม่ได้ฉันนั้น จนกว่าน้องชายคนสุดท้องของพวกเจ้าจะมาที่นี่

Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”

ให้คนหนึ่งในพวกเจ้ากลับไปพาน้องชายมา เราจะกักพวกที่เหลือไว้ในคุก เพื่อจะได้พิสูจน์ว่าเรื่องที่เจ้าเล่านั้นเป็นความจริงหรือไม่ ถ้าไม่จริง ฟาโรห์ทรงพระชนม์อยู่แน่ฉันใด พวกเจ้าก็เป็นสายลับฉันนั้น!”

And he put them all in custody for three days.

ฉะนั้นโยเซฟจึงจับพวกเขาทั้งหมดขังคุกไว้เป็นเวลาสามวัน

On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

ในวันที่สาม โยเซฟพูดกับพวกเขาว่า “เพราะเราเป็นคนยำเกรงพระเจ้า เจ้าจงทำตามนี้เพื่อเจ้าจะมีชีวิตรอด

If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.

หากพวกเจ้าเป็นคนสุจริตจริงก็จงให้พี่น้องของเจ้าคนหนึ่งจำคุกอยู่ที่นี่ ส่วนที่เหลือให้นำข้าวกลับไปให้ครอบครัวที่อดอยากของเจ้า

But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

แต่พวกเจ้าต้องพาน้องคนสุดท้องของเจ้ากลับมาหาเรา เพื่อว่าพวกเจ้าจะได้พิสูจน์คำพูดของพวกเจ้า และเพื่อพวกเจ้าจะได้ไม่ตาย” พวกเขาก็ยอมทำตามนั้น

They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”

พวกเขาพูดกันเองว่า “ที่พวกเราต้องถูกลงโทษเช่นนี้ต้องเป็นเพราะน้องชายของเราแน่ๆ เราเห็นตำตาว่าเขาเป็นทุกข์แค่ไหนเมื่อเขาร้องอ้อนวอนขอชีวิตจากเรา แต่เราก็ไม่ฟังเขาเลย นี่ต้องเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้ความทุกข์นี้ตกอยู่กับพวกเรา”

Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”

รูเบนตอบว่า “เราห้ามพวกเจ้าแล้วไม่ใช่หรือว่าอย่าทำบาปกับเด็กคนนั้น? แต่พวกเจ้าก็ไม่ฟัง! บัดนี้พวกเราจึงต้องชดใช้บาปที่ฆ่าน้องแล้ว”

They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.

พวกเขาไม่รู้ว่าโยเซฟฟังออก เนื่องจากโยเซฟพูดกับพวกเขาโดยมีล่ามแปล

He turned away from them and began to weep, but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

โยเซฟจึงออกไปร้องไห้แล้วกลับเข้ามาอีก และสั่งให้มัดสิเมโอนต่อหน้าพวกพี่น้อง

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,

จากนั้นโยเซฟสั่งให้บริวารเอาข้าวบรรจุลงเต็มกระสอบของพวกพี่ชาย แล้วเอาเงินค่าข้าวใส่คืนไว้ในกระสอบของแต่ละคนด้วย ทั้งยังให้เสบียงไว้กินตามทาง เมื่อบริวารของโยเซฟทำตามคำสั่งเสร็จแล้ว

they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

พวกพี่ๆ จึงเอากระสอบข้าวบรรทุกบนหลังลาออกเดินทางกลับบ้าน

At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.

แต่เมื่อแวะพักแรมในคืนนั้น มีคนหนึ่งเปิดกระสอบจะเอาข้าวให้ลากิน ก็เห็นเงินของเขาอยู่ที่ปากกระสอบ

“My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

เขาบอกพวกพี่น้องว่า “มีคนคืนเงินของข้าใส่ไว้ในกระสอบ”

พวกเขาใจหายวาบ กลัวจนตัวสั่น หันไปพูดกันว่า “ทำไมพระเจ้าทำกับเราอย่างนี้?”

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said,

เมื่อพวกเขากลับมาหายาโคบผู้เป็นบิดาในคานาอัน ก็เล่าเรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นทั้งหมดให้ยาโคบฟังว่า

“The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.

“ชายผู้เป็นเจ้านายปกครองดินแดนพูดจาหาเรื่องเราและทำต่อเราราวกับว่าพวกเราไปสอดแนมในแผ่นดินนั้น

But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.

แต่พวกเราบอกกับเขาว่า ‘พวกเราเป็นคนสุจริตไม่ใช่สายลับ

We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’

เรามีกันสิบสองคนพี่น้องพ่อเดียวกัน คนหนึ่งจากไปแล้ว และคนสุดท้องยังอยู่กับพ่อในคานาอัน’

“Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.

“แล้วชายคนนั้นที่เป็นเจ้านายเหนือแผ่นดินพูดกับเราว่า ‘วิธีนี้จะทำให้เรารู้ว่าพวกเจ้าเป็นคนซื่อสัตย์หรือไม่ คือทิ้งพี่น้องคนหนึ่งของพวกเจ้าไว้กับเราที่นี่ นอกนั้นเอาข้าวกลับไปให้ครอบครัวที่อดอยาก

But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade^[a] in the land.’”

แล้วพาน้องชายคนสุดท้องมาหาเรา เราจะได้รู้ว่าเจ้าเป็นคนสุจริตไม่ใช่คนสอดแนม แล้วเราจะคืนพี่น้องของเจ้าที่ถูกขังไว้ให้พวกเจ้า และเจ้าสามารถติดต่อค้าขาย^[a]ในดินแดนนี้ด้วย’ ”

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.

ขณะที่พวกเขาต่างกำลังเทข้าวออกจากกระสอบ ก็พบถุงเงินอยู่ในกระสอบของแต่ละคน! เมื่อพวกเขาและบิดาของเขาเห็นถุงเงินเหล่านั้นก็ตกใจกลัว

Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

ยาโคบบิดาของพวกเขาพูดว่า “พวกเจ้าช่างพรากพ่อพรากลูกเสียจริงๆ โยเซฟก็จากไปแล้ว สิเมโอนก็จากไปแล้ว ตอนนี้พวกเจ้ายังจะเอาตัวเบนยามินไปอีก ข้าก็รับกรรมแต่เพียงคนเดียว!”

Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

รูเบนจึงพูดกับบิดาว่า “พ่อก็ฆ่าลูกชายทั้งสองคนของข้าได้เลย ถ้าข้าไม่พาเบนยามินกลับมาหาท่าน มอบเขาไว้ในความดูแลของข้าเถิด และข้าจะนำเขากลับมา”

But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

แต่ยาโคบตอบว่า “ลูกของเราจะไม่เดินทางลงไปกับพวกเจ้าเด็ดขาด พี่ชายของเขาก็ตายไปแล้ว เหลือเขาอยู่คนเดียว ถ้าเกิดอันตรายขึ้นกับเขาระหว่างทาง พวกเจ้าจะพาให้หัวหงอกของพ่อลงไปสู่แดนคนตายด้วยความโศกเศร้า”
