Genesis 48

Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.

Poco tiempo después le informaron a José que su padre estaba enfermo. Entonces fue a visitarlo y llevó consigo a sus dos hijos, Manasés y Efraín.

When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Cuando le avisaron a Jacob que su hijo venía a verlo, hizo un esfuerzo, se sentó en la cama

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me

y le dijo a José:

—El Dios Todopoderoso se me apareció en Luz, en la tierra de Canaán, y me bendijo

and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’

con esta promesa: “Te haré fecundo, te multiplicaré, y haré que tus descendientes formen una comunidad de naciones. Además, a tu descendencia le daré esta tierra como su posesión perpetua”.

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Ahora bien, los dos hijos que te nacieron aquí en Egipto, antes de que me reuniera contigo, serán considerados míos. Efraín y Manasés serán tan míos como lo son Rubén y Simeón.

Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.

Los hijos que tengas después de ellos serán tuyos, y a través de sus hermanos recibirán su herencia.

As I was returning from Paddan,^[b] to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).

Cuando yo regresaba de Padán Aram,^[a] tu madre murió cerca de Efrata, en tierra de Canaán, y allí la sepulté junto al camino de Efrata, es decir, Belén.

When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, “Who are these?”

Al ver a los hijos de José, Israel preguntó:

—Y estos chicos, ¿quiénes son?

“They are the sons God has given me here,” Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.”

—Son los hijos que Dios me ha concedido aquí —le respondió José a su padre.

Entonces Israel le dijo:

—Acércalos, por favor, para que les dé mi bendición.

Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.

Israel ya era muy anciano, y por su avanzada edad casi no podía ver; por eso José los acercó, y su padre los besó y abrazó.

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”

Luego le dijo a José:

—Ya había perdido la esperanza de volver a verte, ¡y ahora Dios me ha concedido ver también a tus hijos!

Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.

José los retiró de las rodillas de Israel y se postró rostro en tierra.

And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him.

Luego tomó a sus dos hijos, a Efraín con la derecha y a Manasés con la izquierda, y se los presentó a su padre. De esta manera Efraín quedó a la izquierda de Israel y Manasés a su derecha.

But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

Pero Israel, al extender las manos, las entrecruzó y puso su derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, aunque era el menor, y su izquierda sobre la cabeza de Manasés, aunque era el mayor.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,

When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.

A José no le agradó ver que su padre pusiera su mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, así que tomando la mano de su padre, la pasó de la cabeza de Efraín a la de Manasés,

Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

mientras le reclamaba:

—¡Así no, padre mío! ¡Pon tu mano derecha sobre la cabeza de este, que es el primogénito!

But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.”

Pero su padre se resistió, y le contestó:

—¡Ya lo sé, hijo, ya lo sé! También él gestará a un pueblo, y llegará a ser importante. Pero su hermano menor será aún más importante, y su descendencia dará origen a muchas naciones.

He blessed them that day and said,

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

Aquel día Jacob los bendijo así:

De este modo, Israel dio a Efraín la primacía sobre Manasés.

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you^[d] and take you^[e] back to the land of your^[f] fathers.

Finalmente, Israel le dijo a José:

—Yo estoy a punto de morir; pero Dios estará con ustedes y los hará volver a la tierra de sus antepasados.

And to you I give one more ridge of land^[g] than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.”

Y a ti, que estás por encima de tus hermanos, te doy Siquén,^[b] tierra que luchando a brazo partido^[c] arrebaté a los amorreos.
