Psalm 49

Hear this, all you peoples;
    listen, all who live in this world,

Ouçam isto vocês, todos os povos;
escutem, todos os que vivem neste mundo,

both low and high,
    rich and poor alike:

gente do povo, homens importantes,
ricos e pobres igualmente:

My mouth will speak words of wisdom;
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.

A minha boca falará com sabedoria;
a meditação do meu coração
    trará entendimento.

I will turn my ear to a proverb;
    with the harp I will expound my riddle:

Inclinarei os meus ouvidos a um provérbio;
com a harpa exporei o meu enigma:

Why should I fear when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—

Por que deverei temer,
    quando vierem dias maus,
quando inimigos traiçoeiros me cercarem,

those who trust in their wealth
    and boast of their great riches?

aqueles que confiam em seus bens
e se gabam de suas muitas riquezas?

No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—

Homem algum pode redimir seu irmão
ou pagar a Deus o preço de sua vida,

the ransom for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—

pois o resgate de uma vida não tem preço.
Não há pagamento que o livre

so that they should live on forever
    and not see decay.

para que viva para sempre
e não sofra decomposição.

For all can see that the wise die,
    that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
    leaving their wealth to others.

Pois todos podem ver que os sábios morrem,
como perecem o tolo e o insensato
e para outros deixam os seus bens.

Their tombs will remain their houses^[b] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,
    though they had^[c] named lands after themselves.

Seus túmulos serão suas moradas
    para sempre,^[a]
suas habitações de geração em geração,
ainda que tenham^[b] dado seus nomes a terras.

People, despite their wealth, do not endure;
    they are like the beasts that perish.

O homem, mesmo que muito importante,
    não vive para sempre^[c];
é como os animais, que perecem.

This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.^[d]

Este é o destino
    dos que confiam em si mesmos,
e dos seus seguidores,
    que aprovam o que eles dizem.Pausa

They are like sheep and are destined to die;
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.

Como ovelhas,
    estão destinados à sepultura^[d],
e a morte lhes servirá de pastor.
Pela manhã os justos triunfarão sobre eles!
A aparência deles se desfará na sepultura,
longe das suas gloriosas mansões.

But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
    he will surely take me to himself.

Mas Deus redimirá a minha vida da sepultura
    e me levará para si.Pausa

Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;

Não se aborreça quando alguém se enriquece
e aumenta o luxo de sua casa;

for they will take nothing with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.

pois nada levará consigo quando morrer;
não descerá com ele o seu esplendor.

Though while they live they count themselves blessed—
    and people praise you when you prosper—

Embora em vida ele se parabenize:
“Todos o elogiam, pois você está prosperando”,

they will join those who have gone before them,
    who will never again see the light of life.

ele se juntará aos seus antepassados,
    que nunca mais verão a luz.

People who have wealth but lack understanding
    are like the beasts that perish.
