Jeremiah 18

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:

Esta é a palavra que veio a Jeremias da parte do Senhor:

“Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.”

“Vá à casa do oleiro, e ali você ouvirá a minha mensagem”.

So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel.

Então fui à casa do oleiro, e o vi trabalhando com a roda.

But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Mas o vaso de barro que ele estava formando estragou-se em suas mãos; e ele o refez, moldando outro vaso de acordo com a sua vontade.

Then the word of the Lord came to me.

Então o Senhor dirigiu-me a palavra:

He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.

“Ó comunidade de Israel, será que eu não posso agir com vocês como fez o oleiro?”, pergunta o Senhor. “Como barro nas mãos do oleiro, assim são vocês nas minhas mãos, ó comunidade de Israel.

If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed,

Se em algum momento eu decretar que uma nação ou um reino seja arrancado, despedaçado e arruinado,

and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned.

e se essa nação que eu adverti converter-se da sua perversidade, então eu me arrependerei e não trarei sobre ela a desgraça que eu tinha planejado.

And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted,

E, se noutra ocasião eu decretar que uma nação ou um reino seja edificado e plantado,

and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.

e se ele fizer o que eu reprovo e não me obedecer, então me arrependerei do bem que eu pretendia fazer em favor dele.

“Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’

“Agora, portanto, diga ao povo de Judá e aos habitantes de Jerusalém: Assim diz o Senhor: Estou preparando uma desgraça e fazendo um plano contra vocês. Por isso, converta-se cada um de seu mau procedimento e corrija a sua conduta e as suas ações.

But they will reply, ‘It’s no use. We will continue with our own plans; we will all follow the stubbornness of our evil hearts.’”

Mas eles responderão: ‘Não adianta. Continuaremos com os nossos próprios planos; cada um de nós seguirá a rebeldia do seu coração mau’.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says:

They said, “Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”
