Genesis 50

Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.

Atunci Iosif s-a aruncat pe faţa tatălui său, a plâns şi l-a sărutat.

Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,

Apoi le-a poruncit doctorilor aflaţi în slujba lui să-l îmbălsămeze pe tatăl său, Israel, iar aceştia au făcut întocmai.

taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

Îmbălsămarea a durat patruzeci de zile, căci acesta era timpul necesar pentru îmbălsămare. Egiptenii l-au jelit şaptezeci de zile.

When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him,

După ce au trecut zilele de jale, Iosif le-a zis celor de la curtea lui Faraon: „Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la voi, vorbiţi-i lui Faraon astfel:

‘My father made me swear an oath and said, “I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”

«Tatăl meu m-a pus să jur cerându-mi ca, atunci când va muri, să-l îngrop în mormântul pe care şi l-a săpat în Canaan. De aceea dă-mi voie să mă duc să-l îngrop acolo pe tatăl meu, după care mă voi întoarce.»“

Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”

Faraon a răspuns: „Du-te şi îngroapă-l pe tatăl tău, aşa cum te-a pus să juri.“

So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt—

Iosif s-a dus să-şi îngroape tatăl şi împreună cu el au mers toţi slujitorii lui Faraon, sfetnicii săi şi toţi bătrânii ţării Egiptului,

besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.

toată familia lui Iosif, fraţii săi şi familia tatălui său. Doar copiii, turmele şi cirezile lor au rămas în Goşen^[a].

Chariots and horsemen^[a] also went up with him. It was a very large company.

Împreună cu el au mers care şi călăreţi, formând o mulţime foarte mare.

When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

Când au ajuns la Aria lui Atad^[b], care se află dincolo de Iordan, au ţinut acolo un bocet mare şi solemn. Iosif a ţinut un bocet de şapte zile pentru tatăl său.

When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.^[b]

Când locuitorii din Canaan au văzut bocetul din Aria lui Atad, au zis: „Acesta este un mare bocet al egiptenilor.“ De aceea acel loc a fost numit Abel-Miţrayim^[c]; el se află dincolo de Iordan.

So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them:

Astfel, fiii lui Iacov au făcut pentru el aşa cum le-a poruncit acesta.

They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

Ei l-au dus în Canaan şi l-au îngropat în peştera din ogorul Mahpela, la răsărit de Mamre, pe care Avraam a cumpărat-o de la hititul Efron, împreună cu ogorul, ca teren pentru înmormântare.

After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

După ce l-a îngropat pe tatăl său, Iosif s-a întors în Egipt, împreună cu fraţii săi şi cu toţi cei care se duseseră cu el să-şi îngroape tatăl.

Bunătatea lui Iosif faţă de fraţii săi

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”

Când fraţii lui Iosif au văzut că tatăl lor murise, s-au gândit că poate Iosif îi va urî şi se va răzbuna pentru tot răul pe care i l-au făcut.

So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died:

De aceea ei au trimis să-i spună lui Iosif că, înainte să moară, tatăl lui i-ar fi dat următoarea poruncă:

‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

„Iosife, te rog, iartă nelegiuirea şi păcatul fraţilor tăi, pentru că ei ţi-au făcut rău. Iartă, te rog, nelegiuirea slujitorilor Dumnezeului tatălui tău.“ Iosif a plâns când i s-au spus aceste lucruri.

His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.

Fraţii lui au venit, s-au plecat înaintea lui şi i-au zis:

– Suntem sclavii tăi.

But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

– Nu vă temeţi! le-a răspuns Iosif. Sunt eu în locul lui Dumnezeu?

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Chiar dacă voi aţi intenţionat să-mi faceţi rău, Dumnezeu a schimbat răul în bine pentru a susţine viaţa unui popor numeros, aşa cum face astăzi.

So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

The Death of Joseph

Deci nu vă temeţi! Eu însumi mă voi îngriji de hrana voastră şi a copiilor voştri.

Apoi i-a mângâiat şi le-a vorbit cu bunătate.

Moartea lui Iosif

Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years

Iosif a locuit în Egipt împreună cu familia tatălui său; el a trăit o sută zece ani.

and saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.^[c]

Iosif i-a văzut pe copiii lui Efraim până la a treia generaţie, iar copiii lui Machir, fiul lui Manase, au fost născuţi pe genunchii săi^[d].

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Apoi Iosif le-a zis fraţilor săi: „Eu voi muri, dar Dumnezeu va veni în ajutorul vostru şi vă va duce din această ţară în ţara pe care le-a jurat-o lui Avraam, lui Isaac şi lui Iacov.“

And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

Iosif i-a pus pe fiii lui Israel să jure: „Când Dumnezeu va veni în ajutorul vostru, să luaţi oasele mele de aici.“

So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Iosif a murit la vârsta de o sută zece ani. După ce l-au îmbălsămat, l-au pus într-un sicriu, în Egipt.
