Genesis 19

The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Cei doi îngeri^[a] au ajuns seara la Sodoma. Lot stătea la poarta Sodomei, iar când i-a văzut, s-a ridicat să-i întâmpine, li s-a închinat până la pământ

“My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

şi le-a zis:

– Stăpânii mei, vă rog, întoarceţi-vă la casa slujitorului vostru, rămâneţi peste noapte şi spălaţi-vă picioarele. Mâine dimineaţă vă veţi scula devreme şi vă veţi continua drumul.

– Nu, i-au răspuns ei, ci vom petrece noaptea în afara cetăţii.

But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate.

Dar Lot a insistat foarte mult, astfel încât ei s-au întors cu el şi au intrat în casa lui. Lot le-a pregătit masa, a copt azime, iar aceştia au mâncat.

Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house.

Dar înainte ca ei să se culce, toţi bărbaţii din toate colţurile cetăţii Sodoma, tineri şi bătrâni, au înconjurat casa,

They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

l-au strigat pe Lot şi l-au întrebat:

– Unde sunt bărbaţii care au venit la tine în această seară? Scoate-i afară la noi ca să-i cunoaştem.

Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him

Lot a ieşit afară la ei, a închis uşa după el

and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing.

şi a zis:

– Vă rog, fraţilor, nu fiţi atât de răi.

Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

Am două fiice care n-au cunoscut bărbat; lăsaţi-mă să vi le aduc şi faceţi cu ele ce vă place; dar să nu le faceţi nimic acestor bărbaţi, căci ei au venit să se adăpostească sub acoperişul meu.

“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

– Dă-te din calea noastră! i-au răspuns ei. Acesta a venit aici ca străin, au continuat ei, iar acum face pe judecătorul! Ne vom purta cu tine mai rău decât cu ei.

Ei l-au împins cu putere pe Lot şi s-au apropiat ca să spargă uşa.

But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door.

Dar bărbaţii dinăuntru şi-au întins mâinile, l-au tras pe Lot în casă şi au închis uşa;

Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

iar pe bărbaţii care erau la uşa casei, atât pe cei tineri, cât şi pe cei bătrâni, i-au lovit cu orbire, astfel încât aceştia n-au mai putut găsi uşa.

The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,

Atunci acei bărbaţi i-au zis lui Lot: „Mai ai şi pe altcineva în cetate: gineri, fii, fiice, sau pe altcineva? Scoate-i din acest loc,

because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”

pentru că urmează să-l distrugem, deoarece plângerea împotriva acestui popor a ajuns atât de mare înaintea Domnului, încât Domnul ne-a trimis să-l distrugem!“

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry^[a] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

Lot a ieşit şi le-a spus ginerilor săi, care erau căsătoriţi^[b] cu fiicele sale: „Sculaţi-vă şi ieşiţi din acest loc, pentru că Domnul urmează să distrugă cetatea.“ Dar ginerii săi au crezut că glumeşte.

With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

Când s-a crăpat de ziuă, îngerii l-au grăbit pe Lot, zicând: „Scoală-te, ia-ţi soţia şi pe cele două fiice ale tale, care sunt aici, ca să nu fii distrus odată cu pedeapsa adusă asupra cetăţii.“

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.

Dar pentru că el întârzia, acei bărbaţi i-au luat de mână pe el, pe soţia lui şi pe cele două fiice ale sale, i-au scos şi i-au lăsat în afara cetăţii, pentru că Domnului I-a fost milă de el.

As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

Imediat ce i-au scos afară din cetate, Unul dintre ei a zis:

– Fugi, ca să-ţi scapi viaţa; nu te uita înapoi şi nu te opri nicăieri în câmpie. Fugi la munte, căci altfel vei fi distrus.

But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,^[b] please!

– Nu, Stăpâne, Te rog, I-a^[c] răspuns Lot.

Your^[c] servant has found favor in your^[d] eyes, and you^[e] have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die.

Slujitorul Tău a găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine, iar Tu Ţi-ai arătat îndurarea^[d] faţă de mine, salvându-mi viaţa; nu pot fugi însă la munte, pentru că dezastrul mă va ajunge din urmă şi voi muri.

Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”

Această cetate este destul de aproape ca să pot fugi în ea şi este mică: dă-mi voie să fug acolo. Nu-i aşa că este mică? Astfel, viaţa îmi va fi salvată!

He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of.

– Bine, i-a zis El, îţi împlinesc şi această cerere şi nu voi distruge cetatea despre care ai vorbit.

But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.^[f])

Grăbeşte-te, fugi acolo, pentru că nu pot face nimic până când nu ajungi acolo.

De aceea cetatea a fost numită Ţoar^[e].

By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land.

Răsărea soarele pe pământ când a intrat Lot în Ţoar.

Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens.

Atunci Domnul a făcut să plouă foc şi pucioasă din cer de la Domnul, peste Sodoma şi Gomora.

Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

Astfel, El a distrus acele cetăţi, toată câmpia, toţi locuitorii cetăţilor, precum şi ceea ce creştea pe pământ.

But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Dar soţia lui Lot, care se afla în spatele acestuia, s-a uitat înapoi şi a fost transformată într-un stâlp de sare.

Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.

Avraam s-a sculat dis-de-dimineaţă şi s-a dus la locul unde a stat înaintea Domnului.

He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

S-a uitat în jos spre Sodoma şi Gomora şi spre tot ţinutul câmpiei şi a văzut un fum gros ca fumul unui cuptor de ars, ridicându-se de pe pământ.

Lot şi fiicele sale

So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Lot and His Daughters

Atunci când a distrus cetăţile din câmpie, Dumnezeu Şi-a adus aminte de Avraam şi l-a scos pe Lot din mijlocul nenorocirii care a căzut peste cetăţile în care acesta locuise.

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave.

Lot a ieşit din Ţoar şi a locuit pe munte împreună cu cele două fiice ale sale, pentru că se temea să rămână în Ţoar; a locuit într-o peşteră împreună cu cele două fiice ale sale.

One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth.

Cea mai mare dintre ele i-a zis celei mai mici: „Tatăl nostru este bătrân şi nu este nici un bărbat prin împrejurimi care să intre la noi, aşa cum este obiceiul pe tot pământul.

Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

Haide să-l facem pe tatăl nostru să bea vin şi să ne culcăm cu el, pentru ca să avem copii de la tatăl nostru.“

That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

Astfel, ele l-au îmbătat pe tatăl lor în noaptea aceea, iar cea mai mare s-a dus şi s-a culcat cu tatăl ei; el n-a ştiut nici când s-a culcat ea, nici când s-a sculat.

The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”

În ziua următoare, cea mai mare i-a zis celei mai mici: „Noaptea trecută eu m-am culcat cu tatăl meu; să-l îmbătăm şi în noaptea aceasta, apoi tu te vei duce şi te vei culca cu el, pentru ca să avem copii de la tatăl nostru.“

So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

Ele l-au îmbătat pe tatăl lor şi în seara aceea, apoi cea mai mică s-a dus şi s-a culcat cu el. El n-a ştiut nici când s-a culcat ea, nici când s-a sculat.

So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

Astfel, cele două fiice ale lui Lot au rămas însărcinate de la tatăl lor.

The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab^[g]; he is the father of the Moabites of today.

Cea mai mare a născut un fiu şi i-a pus numele Moab^[f], care este strămoşul moabiţilor de astăzi.

The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi^[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites^[i] of today.

Cea mai mică a născut şi ea un fiu şi i-a pus numele Ben-Ami^[g], care este strămoşul amoniţilor de astăzi.
