Genesis 17

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty^[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.

Când Avram avea nouăzeci şi nouă de ani, Domnul i S-a arătat acestuia şi i-a zis:

– Eu sunt Dumnezeul cel Atotputernic^[a]. Umblă înaintea Mea şi fii fără pată,

Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

iar Eu voi face un legământ cu tine şi te voi înmulţi foarte mult.“

Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,

Atunci Avram I s-a închinat până la pământ, iar Dumnezeu i-a zis:

“As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.

„În ce Mă priveşte pe Mine, acesta este legământul Meu cu tine: tu vei fi tatăl multor neamuri.

No longer will you be called Abram^[b]; your name will be Abraham,^[c] for I have made you a father of many nations.

Nu te vei mai numi Avram, ci numele tău va fi Avraam^[b], pentru că te-am făcut tatăl multor neamuri.

I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

Te voi face foarte roditor: voi face să iasă multe neamuri din tine, chiar regi vor ieşi din tine.

I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

Voi încheia un legământ veşnic cu tine şi cu urmaşii^[c] tăi după tine, pentru toate generaţiile care vor urma, pentru a fi Dumnezeul tău şi al urmaşilor tăi după tine.

The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”

Eu îţi voi da, ţie şi seminţei tale^[d] după tine, ţara în care locuieşti acum ca străin, toată ţara Canaan, ca pe o proprietate veşnică; iar Eu voi fi Dumnezeul lor.“

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

Dumnezeu i-a mai zis lui Avraam:

– În ce te priveşte pe tine, să păzeşti legământul Meu, tu şi urmaşii tăi după tine, în toate generaţiile care vor urma.

This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

Acesta este legământul Meu cu tine şi cu urmaşii tăi după tine, legământ pe care trebuie să-l respecţi: fiecare bărbat dintre voi să fie circumcis.

You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

Să vă circumcideţi în carnea prepuţului vostru; acesta va fi un semn al legământului Meu cu voi.

For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring.

În toate generaţiile care vor urma, fiecare băiat trebuie să fie circumcis când va avea opt zile, fie că este născut în gospodăria ta, fie că l-ai cumpărat cu argint de la vreun străin, şi nu este dintre urmaşii tăi.

Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

Trebuie să fie circumcişi atât cel născut în gospodăria ta, cât şi cel cumpărat cu argintul tău. Legământul Meu în carnea voastră va fi un legământ veşnic.

Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

Orice băiat necircumcis, adică cel care nu este circumcis în carnea prepuţului său, să fie nimicit din poporul său; el a rupt legământul Meu.“

God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.

De asemenea, Dumnezeu i-a zis lui Avraam:

– În ce o priveşte pe Sarai, soţia ta, să nu o mai chemi Sarai, căci de acum numele ei va fi Sara^[e].

I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Eu o voi binecuvânta şi îţi voi da un fiu prin ea. O voi binecuvânta, astfel încât ea va deveni mama unor neamuri; chiar regi ai popoarelor vor ieşi din ea.“

Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”

Atunci Avraam I s-a închinat până la pământ, a râs şi şi-a zis în sine: „I se poate naşte copil unui om de o sută de ani? Poate Sara, care este de nouăzeci de ani, să aibă un copil?“

And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

Apoi I-a zis lui Dumnezeu:

– Aş vrea ca Ismael să trăiască înaintea Ta!

Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.^[d] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

Dar Dumnezeu i-a răspuns:

– Cu siguranţă Sara îţi va naşte un fiu căruia să-i pui numele Isaac^[f]. Eu voi încheia un legământ veşnic cu el şi cu sămânţa^[g] lui după el.

And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.

În ceea ce-l priveşte pe Ismael, te-am auzit: îl voi binecuvânta şi îl voi face roditor şi foarte numeros. El va fi tatăl a doisprezece prinţi, iar Eu îl voi face un neam mare.

But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.”

Totuşi legământul Meu îl voi încheia cu Isaac, cel pe care Sara îl va naşte la anul, pe vremea aceasta.

When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

Când a terminat de vorbit cu Avraam, Dumnezeu S-a înălţat de la el.

On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.

Chiar în ziua aceea, Avraam i-a luat pe fiul său Ismael, pe toţi cei născuţi în gospodăria sa şi pe toţi cei cumpăraţi cu argintul său, pe toţi bărbaţii din gospodăria sa, şi i-a circumcis în carnea prepuţurilor lor, aşa cum i-a poruncit Dumnezeu.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,

Avraam avea nouăzeci şi nouă de ani când a fost circumcis în carnea prepuţului său,

and his son Ishmael was thirteen;

iar fiul său Ismael avea treisprezece ani.

Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.

Avraam şi fiul său au fost circumcişi chiar în ziua aceea.

And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

Au fost circumcişi împreună cu el şi toţi bărbaţii din gospodăria sa, atât cei născuţi în gospodărie, cât şi cei cumpăraţi cu argint de la străini.
