Genesis 42

When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”

ところでそのころ、ヤコブの一家はどうしていたでしょう。やはり食べるに事欠く毎日でした。聞くところによると、エジプトへ行けば穀物が手に入るということです。ヤコブは息子たちに言いました。「みんな、お互いに顔を見合わせていたってしかたない。

He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

エジプトには穀物があるといううわさだ。さあ、ぐずぐずしている暇はない。すぐ買いに行ってくれ。このままではみな飢え死にだ。」

Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

ヨセフの十人の兄は、こうして、エジプトへ穀物を買いに行くことになりました。

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.

しかしヤコブは、ヨセフの弟ベニヤミンだけは、どうしても行かせませんでした。〔ヨセフの時のように〕ベニヤミンの身にも何か悪いことが起こるといけないと思ったのです。

So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.

イスラエル（ヤコブ）の息子たちは、ほかの国からの大ぜいの者たちに混じってエジプトへ行きました。カナン地方のききんも、どこにも劣らないくらいひどかったからです。

Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the person who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

ヨセフの兄たちは、エジプトの総理大臣であり、穀物を売る責任者に会いに出かけました。まさかそれが、弟のヨセフだとは思いもよりません。顔を地につけんばかりに深々と頭を下げました。

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

ヨセフはひと目で兄たちだとわかりましたが、わざとそ知らぬふりをし、きびしく問いただしました。「おまえたちはどこから来たのか。」

「カナンからまいりました。穀物を少し分けていただきたいと思います。」

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

兄たちはまだ気づきません。ヨセフはふっと少年時代に見た夢を思い出し、荒々しく問い詰めました。「おまえたちはスパイに違いない。わが国がききんでどんなに苦しんでいるか、調べに来たのだろう。」

Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

“No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.

「とんでもないことです。ほんとうに食糧を買いに来ただけです。

We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”

私どもはみな兄弟で、正直な者です。スパイだなんてありえません。」

“No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

「いや、スパイだ。そうに決まっている。われわれがどのくらい弱ったか見に来たのだ。」

But they replied, “Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

「恐れながら申し上げます。私どもは十二人兄弟で、父親はカナンの地におります。末の弟は父の家に残りました。もう一人は死んでしまいましたが……。」

Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!

「それがどうした！　何の関係もない。やはりスパイに違いない。

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.

もしおまえたちの言うとおりなら、その末の弟を連れて来なさい。それまではエジプトから一歩たりとも出ることは許さない。

Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”

だれか一人が行って、弟を連れて来なさい。あとの者は全員、拘束させてもらう。そうすれば、おまえたちの申し立てがほんとうかどうかわかる。もし弟がいなければ、おまえたちは間違いなくスパイだ。」

And he put them all in custody for three days.

こうしてヨセフは、一同を三日間、監禁しました。

On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

三日目にヨセフは彼らに言いました。「私は神様を恐れる人間だ。もしおまえたちが潔白なら、それを証明する機会を与えよう。

If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.

一応おまえたちの申し立てを信じるから、一人だけここに残れば、あとの者は穀物を持って帰ってよい。

But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

ただし、末の弟を連れて来るのだ。おまえたちが正直者かどうか、確かめなければならないから。うそでないとわかれば、いのちは助けよう。」

一同は言われたとおりにすることにしました。

They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”

彼らは互いに言いました。「昔、ヨセフにひどいことをしたからなあ。こんなことになったのもその罰だろう。あいつは怖がって必死で助けを求めたのに、おれたちは知らん顔をして、耳を貸そうともしなかった。」

Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”

ルベンが口を開きました。「だからやめろと言ったんだ。それをおまえたちときたら、全く聞こうともしなかった。おかげで今は、自分たちが死ぬはめになったというわけだ。」

They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.

もちろん彼らは、そこに立っているエジプトの総理大臣がヨセフで、話がつつ抜けになっているとは夢にも思いません。それまでは通訳付きで話をしていたからです。

He turned away from them and began to weep, but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

ヨセフはいたたまれなくなり、部屋を出て一人きりになれる場所を探して泣きました。ひとしきり泣くと、また戻り、兄たちの中からシメオンを選んで、みなの見ている前で縛り上げました。

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,

それから召使たちに、一同の袋に穀物をいっぱい詰めさせ、支払った代金をそれぞれの袋の口のところにこっそり戻しておくよう指示しました。そのうえ、旅行に必要な食糧まで取りそろえさせたのです。

they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

一同はろばに穀物を背負わせて帰途につきました。

At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.

その夜、一人がろばに餌をやろうと穀物の袋を開けてびっくりしました。口のところに、払ったはずの代金があるではありませんか。

“My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

「いったいどういうことか。おれの袋に銀が入っているぞ。」彼らは身を震わせました。「きっと神様がこうなさったんだ。だが、どういう意味なのだろう。」

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said,

やがて、彼らはカナンの地の父ヤコブのもとへ帰り、一部始終を報告しました。

“The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.

「総理大臣というのがとても恐ろしい人でね、われわれをスパイだと言ってきかないのです。

But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.

そこで、『とんでもない。私たちはまじめな人間で、スパイなんかではありません。

We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’

全部で十二人兄弟ですが、一人は死に、末の弟はカナンの地で父といっしょにいます』

“Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.

と説明すると、その人は言いました。『うそをついているかどうか調べなければならん。一人だけここに残り、あとは穀物を持って家へ帰るがよい。

But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade^[a] in the land.’”

ただし、末の弟を連れて来なければならない。そうすれば、おまえたちがスパイかそれとも正直な人間かがわかる。おまえたちの言ったとおりなら、人質も返してやるし、何度でも穀物を買いに来てよろしい』と言うのです。」

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.

彼らが袋を空にしようとすると、みなの袋に、それぞれの代金がそっくりそのまま入っていました。彼らは恐ろしくなりました。父も同じです。

Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

しばらくしてヤコブが叫びました。「おまえたちのおかげで、私は子どもをなくしてしまった。ヨセフは出かけたまま戻らず、シメオンも捕らえられてしまった。今度はベニヤミンを連れて行きたいだと？　私をどれだけ苦しめれば気がすむのだ！」

Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

その時、ルベンが言いました。「お父さん、もしベニヤミンが戻らなかったら、私の二人の子どもを殺してかまいません。責任は私が負います。必ずベニヤミンを連れて帰ります。」

But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

しかし、ヤコブは聞き入れません。「あの子は絶対エジプトへはやらない。兄のヨセフはすでに死に、同じ母親の子はあれしかいない。あの子に万一のことがあれば、私も死ぬ。」
