Genesis 33

Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.

やがて、向こうから、エサウが四百人の供を引き連れて来るのが見えました。ヤコブは、今度は家族を幾つかのグループに分けました。二人のそばめとその子どもたちを先頭に、レアとその子どもたちを次に、そしてラケルとヨセフを最後に置きました。

He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.

He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.

そして自分は、一番先頭に立ちました。エサウとの距離はどんどん縮まります。ヤコブは、立ち止まっては深々と頭を下げ、また少し行ってはおじぎをするというぐあいに、七度もくり返しました。

But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.

それを見たエサウは走り寄って出迎え、弟をきつく抱きしめると、愛情を込めて口づけをしました。感激のあまり、二人は涙にくれるばかりです。

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.

Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”

エサウは女と子どもたちを見て尋ねました。「あの連れの者たちは？」

「私の子どもです。」

Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down.

まず二人のそばめが子どもたちといっしょに進み出て、ていねいにおじぎをしました。

Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.

次にレアと子どもたち、最後にラケルとヨセフがあいさつしました。

Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”

“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,” he said.

「ここに来る途中、たくさんの家畜の群れを見たが、あれは何かな。」

「私から、ご主人である兄さんへの贈り物です。ほんの心ばかりのものですが、ごあいさつ代わりに。」

But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”

「ヤコブ、私は家畜なら十分持っているよ。わざわざ贈り物をくれなくていい。自分で持っておきなさい。」

“No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.

「そんなことを言わず、受け取ってください。兄さんのにこやかな笑顔を見て安心しました。兄さんに会うのが怖かったのです。神様の前に出る時のように。

Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.

遠慮しないで、気持ちよく納めてください。神様のおかげで、私も多少は財産を持てる身になったのですから。」ヤコブがしきりに言うので、とうとうエサウは贈り物を受け取りました。

Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”

「さあ、そろそろ出かけよう。道案内はわれわれが引き受けるよ。」

But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.

「ありがとう、兄さん。でもせっかくですが、ごらんのとおり、小さな子どもや生まれたばかりの家畜もいるものですから。あまり急がせたら、群れは死んでしまうでしょう。

So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”

ですから、兄さんは先に行ってください。私たちはあとからゆっくり行きます。兄さんのいるセイルでまたお目にかかりましょう。」

Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”

“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

「わかった、それでは手伝いに何人か残していくから、道案内にでも使ってくれ。」

「それには及びません。ご厚意は十分に受けましたし、私たちだけでも何とかなりますから。」

So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.

エサウはその日、セイルに向けて出発しました。

Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.^[a]

ヤコブ一家はスコテまで行くとテントを張り、家畜の群れには囲いを作りました。そこがスコテ〔「小屋」の意〕と呼ばれるのはそのためです。

After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,^[b] he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.

こうして、無事カナンのシェケムに到着し、町の外にテントを張りました。

For a hundred pieces of silver,^[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.

その土地を、ヤコブはシェケムの父ハモルの家から銀貨百枚で買い取り、

There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.^[d]

祭壇を築いて、エル・エロヘ・イスラエル〔「イスラエルの神のための祭壇」の意〕と名づけました。
