Genesis 32

^[a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

ヤコブの一行は旅を続けました。すると神の使いたちが彼に現れました。

When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim.^[b]

ヤコブはその姿を見ると、「神様はここにおられる」と叫び、そこをマハナイム（「神の陣営」の意）と名づけました。

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

さてヤコブは、セイルの地エドムにいる兄のエサウに使いをやり、こう言わせました。

He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.

「兄さん、おひさしぶりです。ヤコブです。長い間ごぶさたしましたが、お変わりありませんか。私は最近まで伯父のラバンのもとに身を寄せていました。

I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’”

ようやく、牛やろばや羊や奴隷を持てるようになったので、帰国することにしたのです。だれよりもまず、私の主人である兄さんに、そのことをお知らせいたします。どうか快く迎えてくださいますように。」

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

使いが戻りました。エサウは四百人の供を引き連れて、出迎えに来る途中だといいます。

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,^[c] and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

恐れていたとおりです。手を打たなければなりません。ヤコブは気が動転しながらも策を練りました。自分たちの一行を、家畜の群れやらくだも全部、二つに分けました。

He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,^[d] the group^[e] that is left may escape.”

「もしエサウが一方に攻撃をしかけても、もう一方は助かるだろう」と考えたのです。

Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’

やるだけのことはしました。あとは主に祈るだけです。「祖父アブラハムも信じ、父イサクもお従いする神様。国へ帰れと私に命じ、必ず祝福すると約束してくださった神様。

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.

神様はいつもお約束どおり、私に恵みを与えてくださいました。そんな資格は私には全くありませんのに。実家を出た時、私は杖しか持っていませんでした。しかし、今は違います。あの二つに分けた財産はみな、私のものです。

Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.

神様、どうかお助けください。兄はどんな手荒なことをするかわかりません。私たち一家を皆殺しにするかもしれないのです。考えただけでもぞっとします。

But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

神様は、私を祝福し、子孫を海辺の砂のように多くしてくださる、と約束されました。今そのお約束を思い出してください。」

He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:

その夜はそこに泊まり、彼は兄エサウへの贈り物を用意しました。雌やぎ二百頭、雄やぎ二十頭、雌羊二百頭、雄羊二十頭、乳らくだ三十頭とその子、雌牛四十頭、雄牛十頭、雌ろば二十頭、雄ろば十頭。

two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”

ヤコブは召使たちに、ひと足先に群れを追って行くように指示しました。また、それぞれの群れの間に距離を置くようにも言いました。

He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’

先頭の群れを追う男たちには、特に念を押しておかなければなりません。兄エサウと出会ったらきっと、「どこへ行くのか。主人はだれで、この家畜はだれのものだ」と聞かれるだろうから、

then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”

「エサウ様ですね。これはみな、あなた様のしもべヤコブのもので、ご主人のあなた様に差し上げる贈り物でございます。ヤコブもすぐあとからまいります」と答えるように、と言い含めました。

He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

あとに続くグループにも同じようにし、同じことを言うように指示しました。

And be sure to say, ‘Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”

顔を合わせる前にまず贈り物をして、エサウをなだめようというのです。「こうすれば、いくら兄さんでも手荒なことはしないだろう。」

So Jacob’s gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

贈り物を持って行かせたあと、その夜はテントで寝ることにしました。

That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

しかし、やはり心配でなかなか眠れません。まだ夜中だというのに起き出し、二人の妻と二人のそばめ、十一人の子どもたちを連れてヨルダン川を越えました。全員が無事にヤボクの渡しを渡り終えるのを見届けると、ヤコブは一人で、もう一度テントに戻りました。もう全く一人きりです。と、そこへ一人の人が現れ、二人は明け方まで格闘を続けました。

After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

なかなか勝負がつきません。その人はヤコブに勝てないとわかると、ヤコブの腰を打って関節をはずしてしまいました。

Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

「もう行かせてくれ。じきに夜が明ける。」その人が頼みました。

しかしヤコブは、はあはあと息を切らせながら答えました。

「私を祝福してくださるまでは絶対に放しません。」

The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

「あなたの名前は何というのか。」

「ヤコブです。」

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[f] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

「いや、もうヤコブではない。神と戦い、人と戦って強さを示したのだから、イスラエルと変えるがいい。」

Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

「よろしければ、お名前を聞かせてください。」

「いや、それはできない。」そう答えると、その人はその場でヤコブを祝福しました。

So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

ヤコブはそこをペヌエル〔「神の顔」の意〕と名づけました。彼が、「神様と直接お会いしたのに、死なずにすんだ」と言ったからです。

The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,^[h] and he was limping because of his hip.

さあ、出発です。日も昇りました。しかし、腰の関節がはずれていたので、足を引きずらなければなりませんでした。

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

イスラエル人が今でも腰のすじ肉を食べないのは、ここに由来があります。
