Verse 1

When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he answered.

イサクは年をとり、目がほとんど見えなくなりました。そんなある日、長男のエサウを呼びました。

「エサウかい？」

「はい。何ですか、お父さん。」

Verse 2

Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.

「私ももう年だ。いつお迎えが来るかわからない。これから鹿を取って来てくれないか。私の好きな鹿肉料理を知ってるな。あの、実にうまい、何とも言えない味の料理だ。あれを作って持って来てくれ。そして、死ぬ前に長男のおまえを祝福したいのだ。」

Verse 3

Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”

Verse 5

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back,

ところが、二人の話をリベカが立ち聞きしていたのです。

Verse 6

Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

エサウが鹿を取りに出かけてしまうと、彼女は次男ヤコブを呼び、一部始終を話しました。

Verse 7

‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’

Verse 8

Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:

「さあヤコブ、言うとおりにするのです。群れの中から上等の子やぎを二頭引いておいで。それで私がお父さんの好きな料理を作るから、お父さんのところへ持ってお行き。食べ終わったら、お父さんは亡くなる前に、エサウではなく、おまえを祝福してくださるでしょう。」

Verse 9

Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.

Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.”

Verse 11

Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man while I have smooth skin.

「だけどお母さん、そんなに簡単にはいきませんよ。だいいち、兄さんは毛深いのに、僕の肌はこんなにすべすべです。お父さんがさわったら、すぐにばれてしまいます。そのあげく、お父さんはだまされたと思って、祝福するどころか、のろうに決まってます。」

Verse 12

What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing.”

Verse 13

His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go and get them for me.”

「もしそんなことになったら、私が代わりにのろいを受けます。今は言うとおりにしなさい。さあ、何をぐずぐずしてるの。早く子やぎを引いておいで。」

Verse 14

So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.

ヤコブは言われたとおりにしました。連れて来た子やぎで、リベカは夫の好物の料理を作りました。

Verse 15

Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

それから、家に置いてあったエサウの一番良い服を出して、ヤコブに着せました。

Verse 16

She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.

また、やぎの毛皮を手にかぶせ、首の回りにも毛皮を巻きました。

Verse 17

Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

あとは、おいしそうなにおいのしている肉料理と焼きたてのパンを渡して、準備完了です。

Verse 18

He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”

ヤコブは内心びくびくしながら、それらを持って父親の寝室に入りました。

「お父さん。」

「だれだね、その声はエサウかい？　それともヤコブかい？」

Verse 19

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”

「長男のエサウです。お父さんのおっしゃるとおりにしました。ほら、お父さんが食べたがってたおいしい鹿の肉ですよ。起き上がって、座って食べてください。そのあとで、僕を祝福してください。」

Verse 20

Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,” he replied.

「それはまた、ずいぶん早く鹿を捕まえたものだな。」

「ええ、主がすぐ見つけられるようにしてくださったのですよ。」

Verse 21

Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

「それはそうと、こちらへおいで。おまえがほんとうにエサウかどうか、さわって確かめよう。」

Verse 22

Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

そばへ行ったヤコブをイサクは手でなで回しながら、ひとり言のようにつぶやきます。「声はヤコブそっくりだが、この手はどう考えてもエサウの手だ。」

Verse 23

He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him.

イサクはすっかりだまされてしまいました。そして、エサウになりすましたヤコブを祝福しようとしました。

Verse 24

“Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

「おまえは、ほんとうにエサウかい？」

「ええ、もちろん私ですよ。」

Verse 25

Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.

「では鹿肉料理を持っておいで。それを食べて、心からおまえを祝福しよう。」

ヤコブが料理を持って来ると、イサクは喜んで食べ、いっしょに持って来たぶどう酒も飲みました。

Verse 26

Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

「さあここへ来て、私に口づけしてくれ。」

Verse 27

So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.

ヤコブは父のそばへ行き、頬に口づけしました。イサクは息子の服のにおいをかぎ、いよいよエサウだと思い込みました。「わが子の体は、主の恵みをたっぷり頂いた大地と野の快い香りでいっぱいだ。主がいつも十分な雨を降らせ、豊かな収穫と新しいぶどう酒を与えてくださいますように。たくさんの国がおまえの奴隷となるだろう。おまえは兄弟たちの主人となる。親類中がおまえに腰をかがめ、頭を下げる。おまえをのろう者はみなのろわれ、おまえを祝福する者はすべて祝福される。」

Verse 28

May God give you heaven’s dew
and earth’s richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.

Verse 29

May nations serve you
    and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
    and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed
    and those who bless you be blessed.”

Verse 30

After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting.

イサクがヤコブを祝福し、ヤコブが部屋を出て行くのと入れ替わるように、エサウが狩りから戻って来ました。

Verse 31

He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”

彼もまた父の好物の料理を用意し、急いで持って来たのです。「さあさあ、お父さん、鹿の肉を持って来ましたよ。起き上がって食べてください。そのあとで、約束どおり私を祝福してください。」

Verse 32

His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.”

「何だと？　おまえはいったいだれだ。」

「ええっ？　私ですよ。長男のエサウですよ。」

Verse 33

Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!”

なんということでしょう。イサクは見る間にぶるぶる震えだしました。「では、ついさっき鹿の肉を持って来たのはだれだったのだ。私はそれを食べて、その男を祝福してしまった。いったん祝福した以上、取り消すことはできない。」

Verse 34

When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me—me too, my father!”

あまりのショックに、エサウは気が動転し、激しく泣き叫びました。「そんな、ひどいですよ、お父さん。私を、この私を祝福してください。ね、どうかお願いします、お父さん。」

Verse 35

But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”

「かわいそうだが、それはできない。おまえの弟が私をだましたのだ。そして、おまえの祝福を奪ってしまった。」

Verse 36

Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob^[a]? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing!” Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

「ヤコブときたら、全く名前どおりだ。『だます者』〔ヤコブという名には『つかむ人』（25・26）以外に、この意味もある〕とは、よく言ったものだ。あいつは長男の権利も奪った。それだけでは足りず、今度は祝福までも盗んだってわけか。お父さん、念のため聞きますが、私のためには祝福を残してくれていないのですか。」

Verse 37

Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

「すまんが、私はあれを、おまえの主人にしてしまった。おまえばかりではない。ほかの親類の者もみな、あれの召使になるようにと祈った。穀物やぶどう酒が豊かに与えられるとも保証してしまったし……、ほかにいったい何が残っているというのだ。」

Verse 38

Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.

「それでは、私にはもう何一つ祝福が残っていないとおっしゃるのですか。あんまりだ、お父さん。何とかならないのですか。どうか、どうか私も祝福してください。」

イサクは何と言ってよいかわかりません。エサウは声を上げて泣き続けました。

Verse 39

His father Isaac answered him,

“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew of heaven above.

「おまえは一生苦労が絶えないだろう。自分の道を剣で切り開いていかなければならないのだから。ただ、しばらくは弟に仕えることになるが、結局はたもとを分かち、自由になるだろう。」

家を出るヤコブ

Verse 40

You will live by the sword
    and you will serve your brother.
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.”

Verse 41

Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

このことがあってからエサウは、ヤコブのしたことを根に持つようになりました。「お父さんも先は長くはない。その時がきたら、ヤコブのやつを必ず殺してやろう。」

Verse 42

When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.

ところが、このたくらみは感づかれてしまいました。直ちに、母リベカのところにその報告がきました。リベカは急いでヤコブを呼びにやり、エサウがいのちをねらっていることを教えました。

Verse 43

Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Harran.

「いいね、ハランのラバン伯父さんのところへ逃げるのです。

Verse 44

Stay with him for a while until your brother’s fury subsides.

ほとぼりが冷めるまで、しばらくお世話になるといいわ。

Verse 45

When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I’ll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

そのうち兄さんも、あなたのしたことを忘れるでしょう。そうなったら知らせるから。一日のうちに息子を二人とも失うなんて、とても耐えられません。」

Verse 46

Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”

そして、夫のイサクにうまく話を持ちかけました。「私はこのあたりの娘たちには我慢なりません。もういやけがさしました。もし、ヤコブがこの土地の娘と結婚することになったら、生きているかいもありません。」
