Genesis 26

Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar.

ところで、そのころ、国中がひどいききんに見舞われました。アブラハムの時代にあったのと同じような大ききんです。それでイサクは、ペリシテ人の王アビメレクが住むゲラルの町に移りました。

The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.

神はそこでイサクに現れました。「エジプトへ行ってはいけない。

Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

この国にとどまりなさい。わたしがついているから心配はいらない。あなたを祝福しよう。あなたの父アブラハムに約束したとおり、この地をあなたとその子孫に与えよう。

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring^[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[b]

あなたの子孫を空の星のように増やし、この地をすべて与える。彼らは世界中の国々の祝福のもととなる。

because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”

アブラハムがわたしの命令とおきてに従ったからだ。」

So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

イサクはゲラルに滞在することにしました。

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

しかし、リベカのことを町の男たちに何と説明したらいいでしょう。思案のあげく、イサクは「彼女は妹だ」と言うことにしました。もし妻だと言えば、だれかが彼女に目をつけ、手に入れたいと思った時、自分が殺されるかもしれないからです。それほどリベカは美しかったのです。

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

しかし、それからしばらくして、ペリシテ人の王アビメレクは、たまたま、イサクがリベカを愛撫しているのを窓越しに見てしまいました。

So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

アビメレク王はすぐさまイサクを呼びつけました。「あの女はおまえの妻ではないか。なぜ妹だなどとうそをついたのだ！」

「いのちが惜しかったのです。だれかが私を殺して妻を奪おうとするのではないかと、心配だったものですから。」

Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

「全く、よくもあんなうそがつけたものだ。もしだれかがあなたの妻と寝たら、どうするつもりだったのか。そうなったら、さばかれるのはわれわれのほうなのだ。」

So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

そこでアビメレク王は布告しました。「イサクとその妻とに危害を加える者は死刑に処す。」

Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him.

その年、イサクの畑は大豊作でした。まいた種の百倍も収穫があったのです。まさに神からの祝福です。

The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

それからは裕福になる一方で、たちまち資産家になりました。

He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

羊ややぎのおびただしい群れ、ばく大な数の牛、そして大ぜいの召使、全部イサクのものでした。ペリシテ人はおもしろくありません。

So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.

それで、いやがらせに、彼の井戸を片っぱしから埋めてしまいました。彼の父アブラハムの使用人たちが掘った井戸すべてを埋めたのです。

Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”

アビメレク王はイサクに、この国から立ち去ってほしいと頼みました。「どこかよその土地に行ってくれないか。あなたは非常に裕福で、今ではもう、われわれなど歯が立たないほどの力を持っている。」

井戸をめぐる争い

So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.

イサクは町を出て、ゲラルの谷間に住みつきました。

Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

そして父アブラハムの井戸、父の死後ペリシテ人が埋めてしまったあの井戸を、もう一度掘ったのです。井戸の名前も、父親が以前つけたのと同じ（ベエル・シェバ）にしました。

Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

イサクの羊飼いたちも、ゲラルに新しい井戸を一つ掘り、勢いよく水があふれる水源を発見しました。

But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,^[c] because they disputed with him.

すると、土地の羊飼いたちが来て、井戸は自分たちのものだと主張しました。「ここはおれたちの土地だ。だから井戸もおれたちのものだ」と、イサクの羊飼いたちに言いがかりをつけたのです。イサクはその井戸を、「エセク」〔「言い争いの井戸」の意〕と名づけました。

Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.^[d]

イサクの羊飼いたちは別の井戸を掘りましたが、その井戸の所有権をめぐって、また争いが起きました。今度はそれを「シテナ」〔「怒りの井戸」の意〕と名づけ、

He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,^[e] saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

あきらめて、また新しい所で掘りました。今度は、土地の者たちとの争いがありませんでした。そこで彼らはそれを「レホボテ」〔「広々とした場所の井戸」の意〕と名づけ、言いました。「とうとう主は、広々とした場所を与えてくださった。もう大丈夫だ。これからはここで繁栄していくのだ。」

From there he went up to Beersheba.

さて、イサクがベエル・シェバに行った時のことです。

That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

その夜、主が現れて言いました。「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神である。恐れてはいけない。わたしはあなたとともにいてあなたを祝福する。子孫を増やし、大きな国にしよう。わたしに聞き従ったアブラハムに約束したとおりに。」

Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

イサクは祭壇を築き、主を礼拝しました。そして、そこに住むことにし、彼の使用人たちは井戸を掘りました。

アビメレクとの契約

Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.

ある日、イサクのところにゲラルから客が来ました。アビメレク王が、顧問のアフザテと軍の司令官ピコルとを連れて来たのです。

Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”

「どういうご用ですか。あんなひどい仕打ちをして、私を追っ払ったのに、どうしてここまで来たのですか。」

They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you

「まあ、そう言わないでください。ほかでもありません、あなたは実に恵まれた人だ。神様に祝福されていることがよくわかります。それで、お互いに条約を結びたいと思ったわけです。

that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”

私たちに危害を加えないと約束してください。私たちも今まで、あなたに危害を加えなかったし、むしろ好意的にしてきたつもりです。あの時だって、武力をふるったわけではないし、納得のうえで国を出てもらいました。それはそれとして、今、あなたは神様に祝福されているのです。」

Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

そこでイサクは、ごちそうを作って一行をもてなしました。食事を共にするのは、契約を結ぶ備えでもあったのです。

Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

翌朝起きるとすぐ、彼らは不可侵条約を結び、厳粛な誓いを交わしました。こうして一行は、イサクに見送られて国へ帰りました。

That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!”

ちょうどその日、イサクの使用人たちが来て、「ようやく水が出ました」と報告しました。井戸を掘っているところだったからです。

He called it Shibah,^[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.^[g]

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

そこでイサクは、その井戸を「シブア」〔「誓いの井戸」の意〕と名づけました。そこにできた町も「ベエル・シェバ」〔「誓い」の意〕と呼ばれるようになり、今もその名のままです。

エサウの結婚

When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

ところで、エサウは四十歳でヘテ人ベエリの娘エフディテと結婚し、またヘテ人エロンの娘バセマテも妻にしました。

They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

この結婚は、両親のイサクとリベカには悩みの種となりました。
