Genesis 18

The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.

アブラハムがマムレの樫の木のそばにテント（天幕と呼ばれる移動式住居）を張っていた時、神は再び彼に現れました。そのいきさつは次のとおりです。

夏のある暑い日の午後でした。アブラハムはテントの入口に座っていました。

Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.

ふと目を上げると、三人の人がこちらに向かって来ます。アブラハムはすぐさま立ち上がり、走って行って、喜んで出迎えました。

He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord,^[a] do not pass your servant by.

「まあまあ、そんなに先を急がないで、どうぞゆっくりこの木陰でお休みください。水をお持ちしますから、足でも洗ってさっぱりなさるといいですよ。

Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.

Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”

“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”

大したものもありませんが、食事でもいかがですか。元気がつきますよ。しばらく休んで、それから旅を続けられたらよろしいでしょう。」

「ありがとう。おっしゃるとおりにさせていただきましょう。」

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs^[b] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”

アブラハムはさっそく、テントの中にいるサラのところへ駆け戻りました。「さあ、一番上等の粉で、大急ぎでパンケーキを作っておくれ。お客様が三人お見えだ。」

Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.

次は家畜のところに走って行って、群れの中から太った子牛を選ぶと、召使に急いで料理するよう言いつけました。

He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

まもなく、チーズとミルクと子牛のあぶり肉が運ばれ、食卓が整えられました。客が木の下で食事をしている間、アブラハムはそばに立っていました。

“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him.

“There, in the tent,” he said.

「ところで、奥さんはどちらにおられますか？」と三人が尋ねるので、「テントの中です」と答えました。

Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”

Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.

三人のうちの一人（実は神だった）が言いました。「来年の今ごろわたしがまた来る時、あなたとサラの間に、男の子が生まれている。」サラはうしろのテントの入口で一部始終を聞いていました。

Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.

この時、すでにアブラハムもサラもすっかり年をとり、サラは子を産める時期はとうの昔に過ぎていたので、

So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

彼女は笑いをかみ殺すのがやっとでした。そして、「私みたいな老いた者が、赤ん坊を産むだなんて」と、彼女はおかしそうにつぶやきました。「それに主人だってもうかなりの年だし……。」

Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’

神はそれを聞きとがめ、アブラハムに言いました。「なぜ、サラは笑ったのか。なぜ『私みたいな老人に赤ん坊なんか産めるわけがない』とつぶやくのか。

Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

神にできないことは何もない。あなたに言ったとおり、来年の今ごろまた来る時には、必ずサラに男の子が生まれている。」

Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”

But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

サラはあわてて否定しました。「笑っただなんて、とんでもないことです。」しかし、どうなることかと、怖くてたまりません。必死になってごまかしましたが、神はご存じでした。

アブラハムのとりなし

When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.

このあと三人の客は腰を上げ、ソドムに向かいました。アブラハムは彼らを見送ろうと、途中までいっしょに歩いて行きました。

Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?

その時、主は考えました。「わたしの計画をアブラハムに隠しておいていいだろうか。

Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.^[c]

アブラハムの子孫は大きな国になるのだし、世界中の国々が彼のおかげで祝福を受けるのだ。

For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

わたしは彼を選んで、主を敬う、正しく善良な者たちを彼の子孫から起こそうとしている。その約束は果たさなければならない。」

Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous

そこで主は、アブラハムに打ち明けました。「ソドムとゴモラの住民は、すっかり悪に染まってしまったという。ずいぶんひどいことをしているようだ。

that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

今、その知らせがほんとうかどうか調べに行くところなのだ。向こうに着けばはっきりわかるだろう。」

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.^[d]

ほかの二人は、そのままソドムへ向かいましたが、アブラハムはなお主の前に立っていました。彼は恐る恐る神に近づいて言いました。「お尋ねしてもよろしいでしょうか。あなたは正しい人も悪人も同じように殺してしまうおつもりですか。

Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare^[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?

もしあの町に正しい人が五十人いたとしても、それでも滅ぼされますか。その人たちのために町を救おうとはなさらないのですか。

Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

だとしたら、正義はどこにあるのでしょう。悪人も正しい人もいっしょに殺してしまうなどということを、あなたがなさるはずはありません。もしも、もしもそんなことをされるなら、正しい人も悪人も全く同じ扱いをされることになってしまいます。あなたは決してそんなことはなさらないでしょう。全地をさばかれる方は、公平でなければならないのですから。」

The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

「わかった。正しい人が五十人見つかったら、彼らのために町全体を救うことにしよう。」

Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,

「ありがとうございます。こう申し上げる私自身が、ちりや灰にすぎない者だということは、よく承知しております。ですが、もう少しお尋ねしてよろしいでしょうか。

what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

もし正しい人が四十五人しかいない時にはどうでしょう。五人足りないだけで、町をすべて滅ぼされますか。」

「四十五人いれば滅ぼすまい。」

Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

「では、四十人しかいなかったら？」

「四十人でも。」

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

「どうぞお怒りにならないでください。あえてお聞きするのですが、三十人ではいかがですか。」

「やはり滅ぼすまい。」

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

「許されるなら、もう少し続けさせてください。もし二十人だけでしたら？」

「よろしい。その二十人のために滅ぼさない。」

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

「神様、お怒りにならないでください。もうひと言だけ、これが最後です。もしも、たった十人だったら、いかがでしょう。」

「もうよい。その十人のために町を滅ぼすことはしない。」

When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

主はアブラハムと話し終えると、去って行きました。アブラハムは自分のテントに帰って行きました。
