Genesis 16

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;

主の約束にもかかわらず、サライとアブラムには、なかなか子どもができませんでした。そこでサライは、ハガルというエジプト人の女の召使を、

so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”

Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

アブラムにそばめとして与えました。「主はいつまでたっても子どもを授けてくださらないので、あなたが私の召使を迎え入れるしかないと思います。もし子どもが生まれたら、私の子ということにしてください。」アブラムは同意しました。こうしてカナンの地に来てから十年後、

So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

アブラムはハガルを迎え、やがて彼女は妊娠しました。ところが、そのことがわかると、ハガルはとたんに傲慢になり、女主人のサライに横柄な態度をとるようになったのです。

Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”

サライはアブラムに申し立てました。「召使が私を見下げるなんて、みんなあなたのせいですよ。ハガルはいったいだれのおかげで、子どもを身ごもったと思っているのでしょう。こうなったら、どちらが正しいか、主に決めていただきましょう。」

“Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

「まあまあ、そこまで言わなくても。あの娘をおまえの好きなように罰したらいいではないか。」それならと、サライは召使ハガルにとてもつらく当たりました。我慢できず、ハガルは逃げ出しました。

The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

ようやく彼女が、シュルに通じる道のわきにある砂漠の泉のそばまでたどり着いた時、神の使いが彼女を見つけました。

And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

「サライの召使ハガルよ。どこから来て、これからどこへ行くつもりですか。」

「女主人のところから逃げ出して来たのです。」

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”

「それはいけない。戻って従順に仕え、務めをきちんと果たしなさい。心配はいりません。あなたには男の子が生まれるから、イシュマエル〔「神は聞いてくださる」の意〕と名づけなさい。あなたの子孫は大きく増え広がります。主があなたの苦しみを聞き届けられたからです。その子は野生のろばのように荒々しく、思うままにふるまう暴れ者となって、すべての人を敵に回し、ほかの人たちも彼に敵意を抱きます。彼はまた、親族の者とも敵対するでしょう。」

The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

The angel of the Lord also said to her:

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen^[c] the One who sees me.”

そののちハガルは、主のことをエル・ロイ（「私を顧みてくださる神」の意）と呼ぶようになりました。彼女の前に現れたのは、実は神ご自身だったのです。「私は神様を見たのに死にもせず、こうして、そのことを人に話すこともできる」と、彼女は言いました。

That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi^[d]; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

のちにその井戸は、ベエル・ラハイ・ロイ（「私を顧みてくださり、生きておられるお方の井戸」の意）と名がつきました。それはカデシュとベレデの間にあります。

So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.

やがて、ハガルはアブラムの子どもを産み、アブラムはその子をイシュマエルと名づけました。

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

その時、アブラムは八十六歳でした。
