Verse 1

In the eleventh year, in the third month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:

エホヤキン王が捕囚となって十一年目の第三の月の一日、次のような主のことばがありました。

Verse 2

“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:

“‘Who can be compared with you in majesty?

「人の子よ、エジプトの王とその全国民に告げよ。
おまえはかつての大国アッシリヤと同じく、
まるでレバノン杉のようだ。
枝を大きく張って涼しい木陰を作り、
その先端は高く雲にまで達している。

Verse 3

Consider Assyria, once a cedar in Lebanon,
with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest;
it towered on high,
its top above the thick foliage.

Verse 4

The waters nourished it,
    deep springs made it grow tall;
their streams flowed
    all around its base
and sent their channels
    to all the trees of the field.

根は地下深く伸びて、枝はよく生い茂り、
水を回りの木々にも供給していた。

Verse 5

So it towered higher
    than all the trees of the field;
its boughs increased
    and its branches grew long,
    spreading because of abundant waters.

どの木よりも高くそびえ立ち、
根から十分に水分を吸収して枝も大きく伸び、
こんもりと茂っていた。

Verse 6

All the birds of the sky
    nested in its boughs,
all the animals of the wild
    gave birth under its branches;
all the great nations
    lived in its shade.

枝には鳥が巣を作り、木陰で家畜が子を産んだ。
このように世界の大国がみな、その木陰に住んだのだ。

Verse 7

It was majestic in beauty,
with its spreading boughs,
for its roots went down
to abundant waters.

木はたくましく、美しかった。
深く根を張り、十分に水分を吸収していたからだ。

Verse 8

The cedars in the garden of God
    could not rival it,
nor could the junipers
    equal its boughs,
nor could the plane trees
    compare with its branches—
no tree in the garden of God
    could match its beauty.

神の園の中にも、
この木より高くそびえるものはなかった。
糸杉もこの木の枝とは比べようがなく、
その美しさにはかなわなかった。

Verse 9

I made it beautiful
with abundant branches,
the envy of all the trees of Eden
in the garden of God.

わたしが与えたその雄姿を、
エデンのすべての木がうらやましがった。」

Verse 10

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height,

しかし、主はこう語ります。「エジプトは思い上がって、尊大になった。雲にまで達するほど自分を高くして、他を見下した。

Verse 11

I gave it into the hands of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside,

その罰として、わたしはエジプトを大国の手に渡して滅ぼす。わたしがエジプトを切り倒すのだ。

Verse 12

and the most ruthless of foreign nations cut it down and left it. Its boughs fell on the mountains and in all the valleys; its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth came out from under its shade and left it.

国々から恐れられているバビロンからの軍隊を侵入させ、その木を切り倒して、地に投げ捨てさせる。枝はエジプトの山や谷や川に散らされる。その木陰に身を寄せていた者はみな、倒れたエジプトを見捨てて出て行く。

Verse 13

All the birds settled on the fallen tree, and all the wild animals lived among its branches.

いろいろの鳥が、倒れた木の小枝をむしり取り、野獣が枝の間に住みつくようになる。

Verse 14

Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined for death, for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead.

どんな国も、雲より高くそびえても、その繁栄を鼻にかけて思い上がってはならない。すべてのものは滅びるからだ。それらはみな、世界中のおごり高ぶる者とともに、地獄に落とされる。」

Verse 15

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Because of it I clothed Lebanon with gloom, and all the trees of the field withered away.

主は語ります。「エジプトが滅んだ日に、わたしは大海原を喪に服させ、その潮の満ち干を止めてしまった。レバノンに喪服をまとわせ、その木々を嘆き悲しませた。

Verse 16

I made the nations tremble at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to the realm of the dead to be with those who go down to the pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, the well-watered trees, were consoled in the earth below.

エジプトがくずれ落ちる大音響で、多くの国を恐れさせた。エジプトと同罪の国々をも、いっしょに地獄に投げ込んだからだ。エデンでおごり高ぶっている他のすべての木々、レバノンのえり抜きの大木、根を深く下ろして水分を吸い上げた木々は、エジプトが共に地獄にいるのを見て慰められる。

Verse 17

They too, like the great cedar, had gone down to the realm of the dead, to those killed by the sword, along with the armed men who lived in its shade among the nations.

エジプトの同盟国も、いっしょに滅ぼされる。その木陰に宿っていた国々も、共に下界に下って行った。

Verse 18

“‘Which of the trees of Eden can be compared with you in splendor and majesty? Yet you, too, will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth below; you will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.

“‘This is Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

ああ、エジプトよ。おまえはエデンの木々、すなわち世界の国々の中で、その偉大さと栄光を誇っている。だが、他のすべての国々とともに地獄の穴に投げ込まれてしまう。おまえが見下していた国々のように、剣で切り殺されるのだ。」これがエジプト王とその大軍の運命だと、主は語ります。
