Ezekiel 20

In the seventh year, in the fifth month on the tenth day, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat down in front of me.

エホヤキン王が捕らえ移されてから六年後の第五の月、イスラエルの長老たち数人が、主に伺いを立ててほしいと尋ねて来て、私の前に座っていました。

Then the word of the Lord came to me:

その時、主はこのようなことばを私に与えました。

“Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Have you come to inquire of me? As surely as I live, I will not let you inquire of me, declares the Sovereign Lord.’

「人の子よ、イスラエルの長老たちに、神である主はこう語ると言いなさい。よくも助けを求めに来られたものだ。わたしは決して語らない。

“Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Then confront them with the detestable practices of their ancestors

さあ、人の子よ、彼らをさばき、責めなさい。先祖の時代から今日まで、この国の人々が行ってきた、すべての罪を教えてやりなさい。

and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore with uplifted hand to the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hand I said to them, “I am the Lord your God.”

神はこう語ると告げるのだ。わたしがイスラエルを選び、エジプトでわたしが神であることを示した時、彼らとその子孫とにこう誓った。彼らをエジプトから連れ出し、彼らのために探しておいた、乳とみつが流れる最良の地に導くと。

On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.

And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

それから、こう命じた。『すべての偶像を捨てよ。わたしこそ、おまえたちの神、主だ。エジプトの神々を拝んで身を汚すようなことをしてはならない。』

“‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.

だが彼らは、わたしに背いて、いっこうに聞こうとしなかった。偶像を除くことも、エジプトの神々を捨てることもしなかった。それで、彼らがまだエジプトにいる時、わたしは彼らに怒りを注ごうと思った。

But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.

しかし結局、そうはしなかった。イスラエルの神は自分の民を守ることもできなかった、とエジプト人にあざ笑われることがないように、わたしの名誉を守ろうとしたからだ。それで、エジプト人の目の前で、わたしの民をエジプトから連れ出し、荒野へ導き入れたのだ。

Therefore I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.

I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.

そして、その荒野で、彼らにおきてを与えた。そのおきてを守ることによって、彼らが生きるためだった。わたしのおきてを守るなら、だれでも生きる。

Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.

わたしは彼らに安息日（毎週七日目の休息日）を与えた。それは彼らとわたしとの間で、彼らを選び分けて、ほんとうに神の民とするのは、このわたしであることを思い起こさせるしるしだった。

“‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and destroy them in the wilderness.

それなのに、イスラエルはわたしに逆らった。あの荒野で、わたしのおきてに従うことを拒んだのだ。わたしの定めを守るなら真のいのちが与えられるのに、それを守ろうとはしなかった。安息日も悪用した。それで、わたしは怒りを爆発させ、荒野で彼らを滅ぼしてしまおうと考えた。

But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.

しかし、わたしの名誉を守るために、またも思いとどまった。エジプトから彼らを連れ出すのを見ていた国々の民に、主は民を守ることができず滅ぼすことになってしまったと言わせないためだ。

Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands—

そこでわたしは彼らに、一度は与えようと思った選ばれた地、乳とみつの流れる地に、彼らを導き入れないことにすると告げた。

because they rejected my laws and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts were devoted to their idols.

わたしのおきてを鼻であしらい、わたしの願いを無視し、安息日を守らなかった報いだ。彼らの心は偶像に引き寄せられていたのだ。

Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy them or put an end to them in the wilderness.

それでも、わたしは彼らを惜しんで、荒野で滅ぼすことはしなかった。

I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents or keep their laws or defile yourselves with their idols.

わたしは彼らの子どもたちに警告した。『親と同じ罪を犯してはならない。偶像礼拝で身を汚すな。

I am the Lord your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

わたしこそ、あなたがたの神である。わたしのおきてを守り、わたしの命令に従え。

Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.”

安息日を特別な日として、身も心もきよく過ごすのだ。安息日は、わたしがあなたがたの神、主であることを思い起こさせるために、わたしたちの間に立てた契約のしるしなのだから。』

“‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws, of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

しかし、子どもたちもまた、わたしに逆らった。わたしのおきてを守るなら、正しく生きることができるのに、それを拒んだ。安息日も汚した。そこでわたしは言った。『もう限界だ。今すぐ、この荒野で、あなたがたに怒りを注ぎ出す。』

But I withheld my hand, and for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.

それでもなお、わたしは彼らを罰せずにおいた。エジプトから彼らを連れ出したわたしの力を見た国々の中で、わたしの名が傷つけられないためだ。

Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries,

だが、彼らが荒野にいた時、はっきり言い渡した。わたしのおきてを守らず、それをあざ笑うかのように安息日を破り、父たちが拝んだ偶像を慕ったので、地の果てにまで彼らを散らす、と。

because they had not obeyed my laws but had rejected my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths, and their eyes lusted after their parents’ idols.

So I gave them other statutes that were not good and laws through which they could not live;

わたしは、彼らが愚かな習慣や教えを取り入れるのを見ても、好きなようにさせておいた。そんなものを守っても、いのちを得ることなどできない。

I defiled them through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the Lord.’

わたしは彼らに、自分のやっていることがどんなに恐ろしいことかを知らせ、また、わたしだけが神であることに気づいてほしいと思い、わたしが与えた非常に良いもので、彼らが自分の身を汚すのをそのままにさせた。彼らは、最初に生まれた子どもを偶像にささげて、焼き殺したのだ。

“Therefore, son of man, speak to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In this also your ancestors blasphemed me by being unfaithful to me:

人の子よ、神である主がこう語ると、彼らに告げよ。あなたがたの先祖は、約束の地に導き入れられてからも、高い丘や木の下で、所かまわずいけにえをささげ、香をたいて、いつもわたしを裏切り、冒瀆してはばからなかった。彼らが神々にいけにえをささげた時、わたしの怒りは燃え上がった。事もあろうに、偶像に香をたき、ぶどう酒を注いだからだ。

When I brought them into the land I had sworn to give them and they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, made offerings that aroused my anger, presented their fragrant incense and poured out their drink offerings.

Then I said to them: What is this high place you go to?’” (It is called Bamah^[a] to this day.)

Rebellious Israel Renewed

そこで、『おまえたちがいけにえをささげに行く場所は何なのだ』と問いただした。それで、そこは今も、『いけにえの高台』と呼ばれている。

刷新される反逆のイスラエル

“Therefore say to the Israelites: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves the way your ancestors did and lust after their vile images?

神、主は、知りたがっている。あなたがたも先祖のように身を汚し、偶像を拝み続けるつもりなのか。

When you offer your gifts—the sacrifice of your children in the fire—you continue to defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. Am I to let you inquire of me, you Israelites? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will not let you inquire of me.

現に今、偶像へのささげ物として幼児を焼き殺し、灰にしているのに、イスラエルよ、どうしてあなたがたの願いを聞いて、助けることができるだろうか。」

神である主は語ります。「わたしは生きている。いくら願っても、わたしは何も答えない。

“‘You say, “We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will never happen.

いくら、回りの国々を見ならって木や石の偶像を拝もうとしても、それはできない。

As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will reign over you with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.

わたしが鉄のこぶしを振り上げ、大きな怒りをこめて、おまえたちを治めるからだ。

I will bring you from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered—with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.

憤りをこめた強い力で、散らされていた国々からあなたがたを連れ出し、

I will bring you into the wilderness of the nations and there, face to face, I will execute judgment upon you.

荒野にあるわたしの法廷に集め、そこであなたがたをさばく。あなたがたをエジプトから連れ出したあと、荒野でした時のように、反逆者を取り除く。

As I judged your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, declares the Sovereign Lord.

I will take note of you as you pass under my rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.

あなたがたを念入りに数え上げ、ほんの一握りの者だけをイスラエルに戻す。

I will purge you of those who revolt and rebel against me. Although I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

残る大部分の者は、わたしに反逆して罪を犯しているので、みなの間から取り除く。彼らは捕らえられている国から連れ出されるが、イスラエルには入れない。このとおりのことが起こる時、あなたがたは、わたしが神であることを知るようになる。」

“‘As for you, people of Israel, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you! But afterward you will surely listen to me and no longer profane my holy name with your gifts and idols.

ああ、イスラエルよ。神である主はこう語ります。「そんなにも偶像を拝みたければ拝むがいい。だが、そうするなら、わたしにささげ物を持って来るようなことはしてはならない。そのようなことをして、わたしの聖なる名を汚すようなことはやめよ。」

For on my holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord, there in the land all the people of Israel will serve me, and there I will accept them. There I will require your offerings and your choice gifts,^[b] along with all your holy sacrifices.

主はこう語ります。「わたしの聖なる山エルサレムで、全イスラエルはわたしを礼拝する。その所で、わたしはあなたがたを喜んで迎え、いけにえと最上のささげ物を求めよう。

I will accept you as fragrant incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will be proved holy through you in the sight of the nations.

わたしがあなたがたを捕囚から連れ戻す時、あなたがた自身がわたしにささげられた良い香りとなる。諸国の民はあなたがたの心に大きな変化が起こったことを知る。

Then you will know that I am the Lord, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land I had sworn with uplifted hand to give to your ancestors.

さらに、わたしが約束した地に連れ戻す時、あなたがたはわたしが主であることを知るようになる。

There you will remember your conduct and all the actions by which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil you have done.

その時、自分が犯した罪をことごとく思い起こし、その悪のゆえに自分自身を忌みきらうようになる。

You will know that I am the Lord, when I deal with you for my name’s sake and not according to your evil ways and your corrupt practices, you people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

Prophecy Against the South

その悪にもかかわらず、あなたがたを祝福することによって、わたしの名誉を守る時、イスラエルよ、あなたがたはわたしが主であることを知るようになるのだ。」

エルサレムとネゲブへの預言

The word of the Lord came to me:

さらに、このようなことばが主からありました。

“Son of man, set your face toward the south; preach against the south and prophesy against the forest of the southland.

「人の子よ、エルサレムの方へ顔を向け、エルサレムとネゲブの森に、

Say to the southern forest: ‘Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to set fire to you, and it will consume all your trees, both green and dry. The blazing flame will not be quenched, and every face from south to north will be scorched by it.

こう預言せよ。神のことばを聞け。ああ、森よ。わたしはおまえに火をつける。生木も枯れ木も、木という木をすべて焼き尽くそう。その燃えさかる炎は消されず、国中を焼け野原とする。

Everyone will see that I the Lord have kindled it; it will not be quenched.’”

そしてすべての国々は、主であるわたしが火をつけたことを知るだろう。その火が消されることはない。」

Then I said, “Sovereign Lord, they are saying of me, ‘Isn’t he just telling parables?’”^[c]

そこで、私は叫びました。「おお主よ。彼らは私のことを、『なぞをかけるようにしか語らない者』と言っています。」
