Verse 1

Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute.

Галаадитянин Иефтах был могучим воином. Его отцом был Галаад, а матерью – блудница.

Verse 2

Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.”

Жена Галаада тоже родила ему сыновей, и когда они выросли, они выгнали Иефтаха.

– Ты ничего не унаследуешь в нашей семье, – сказали они ему, – потому что тебя родила не наша мать.

Verse 3

So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.

Иефтах убежал от своих братьев и поселился в земле Тов, где вокруг него собрались изгои, которые вместе с ним совершали набеги.

Verse 4

Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel,

Некоторое время спустя, когда аммонитяне пошли войной на Исраил,

Verse 5

the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

старейшины Галаада пошли, чтобы привести Иефтаха из земли Тов.

Verse 6

“Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”

– Приходи, – сказали они, – и будь нашим военачальником, чтобы нам воевать с аммонитянами.

Verse 7

Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”

Иефтах сказал им:

– Разве не вы возненавидели и выгнали меня из дома моего отца? Зачем же вы приходите ко мне сейчас, когда вы в беде?

Verse 8

The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.”

Старейшины Галаада сказали ему:

– И всё же, мы обращаемся сейчас к тебе: пойдём с нами, чтобы воевать с аммонитянами, и ты будешь главой всех жителей Галаада.

Verse 9

Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”

Иефтах ответил:

– Допустим, вы вернёте меня, чтобы воевать с аммонитянами, и Вечный отдаст их мне – стану ли я и вправду вашим главой?

Verse 10

The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.”

Старейшины Галаада ответили:

– Вечный – свидетель между нами! Мы непременно сделаем, как ты говоришь.

Verse 11

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.

Иефтах пошёл со старейшинами Галаада, и народ поставил его над собой вождём и военачальником. Иефтах повторил все свои слова перед Вечным в Мицпе.

Verse 12

Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: “What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?”

Затем он отправил послов с вопросом к царю аммонитян:

– Что ты имеешь против меня, что напал на мою страну?

Verse 13

The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.”

Царь аммонитян ответил послам Иефтаха:

– Когда Исраил шёл из Египта, он захватил мою землю от реки Арнона до реки Иаббока и Иордана. Итак, верни её добровольно.

Verse 14

Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king,

Иефтах ещё раз отправил послов к царю аммонитян

Verse 15

saying:

“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.

сказать ему:

– Вот что говорит Иефтах: Исраил не захватывал ни земель Моава, ни земель аммонитян.

Verse 16

But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea^[a] and on to Kadesh.

Ведь когда они шли из Египта, Исраил прошёл через пустыню до Тростникового моря^[a] и пришёл к городу Кадешу.

Verse 17

Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Give us permission to go through your country,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

Исраил отправил послов к царю Эдома, говоря: «Позволь мне пройти через твою страну». Но царь Эдома не стал слушать. Исраил посылал и к царю Моава, но и тот отказал. И Исраил оставался в Кадеше.

Verse 18

“Next they traveled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.

Затем он странствовал по пустыне, обошёл земли Эдома и Моава, пришёл к восточной стороне земель Моава и поставил лагерь на другой стороне реки Арнона. Он не вошёл в землю Моава – ведь Арнон и был границей моавитян.

Verse 19

“Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Let us pass through your country to our own place.’

Исраил отправил послов к Сигону, царю аморреев, который правил в Хешбоне, и сказал ему: «Позволь нам пройти через твою страну к себе».

Verse 20

Sihon, however, did not trust Israel^[b] to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.

Но Сигон не доверял Исраилу и не дал пройти через свою землю. Он собрал всех своих воинов, разбил стан в Иахаце и напал на Исраил.

Verse 21

“Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country,

Тогда Вечный, Бог Исраила, отдал Сигона и всех его воинов в руки исраильтян, и они разбили их. Исраил завладел землёй аморреев, которые жили в той стране,

Verse 22

capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.

захватив её целиком, от Арнона до Иаббока и от пустыни до Иордана.^[b]

Verse 23

“Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over?

Итак, раз Вечный, Бог Исраила, прогнал аморреев от Своего народа, Исраила, то какое у тебя право владеть ею?

Verse 24

Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us, we will possess.

Разве тебе не довольно владеть тем, что дал тебе твой бог Хемош^[c]? А мы будем владеть всем, что дал нам Вечный, наш Бог.

Verse 25

Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?

Чем ты лучше Валака, сына Циппора, царя Моава? Разве он когда-нибудь ссорился с Исраилом или воевал с ним?

Verse 26

For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time?

Исраил жил в Хешбоне, Ароере, прилегающих к ним поселениях и во всех городах по Арнону триста лет. Что же ты не захватил их за это время?

Verse 27

I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”

Я не провинился перед тобой, а ты причиняешь мне зло, идя на меня войной. Вечный – судья. Пусть Он решит сегодня тяжбу между исраильтянами и аммонитянами.

Verse 28

The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.

Но царь аммонитян не послушал слов Иефтаха.

Verse 29

Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

Тогда Дух Вечного сошёл на Иефтаха. Иефтах прошёл через Галаад и Манассу, прошёл через Мицпу, что в Галааде, и оттуда двинулся на аммонитян.

Verse 30

And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands,

Иефтах поклялся перед Вечным:

– Если Ты отдашь аммонитян в мои руки,

Verse 31

whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

то любое существо, которое выйдет из дверей моего дома мне навстречу, когда я вернусь с победой, будет принадлежать Вечному, и я принесу его в жертву всесожжения.

Verse 32

Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands.

Иефтах переправился, чтобы сразиться с аммонитянами, и Вечный отдал их в его руки.

Verse 33

He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.

Он опустошил двадцать городов от Ароера до предместий Миннита и до самого Авель-Керамима. Так Исраил покорил аммонитян.

Verse 34

When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

А когда Иефтах вернулся к себе домой в Мицпу, то кому же и было выйти ему навстречу, как не его дочери, танцующей под звуки бубнов! Она была его единственным ребёнком. Кроме неё, у него не было больше ни сына, ни дочери.

Verse 35

When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”

Увидев её, он разорвал на себе одежду и закричал:

– О! Моя дочь! Ты сразила меня! Ты стала причиной моего несчастья, ведь я дал Вечному клятву, которую не могу нарушить.

Verse 36

“My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.

– Мой отец, – ответила она, – ты дал Вечному слово. Сделай со мной то, что ты обещал, ведь Вечный дал тебе отомстить твоим врагам, аммонитянам.

Verse 37

But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”

Но исполни одну мою просьбу, – сказала она. – Дай мне два месяца срока, чтобы мне пойти и погулять в горах, поплакать с моими подругами о том, что мне уже никогда не суждено выйти замуж.

Verse 38

“You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry.

– Иди, – сказал он и отпустил её на два месяца.

Она вместе с девушками пошла в горы и плакала о том, что ей уже никогда не суждено выйти замуж.

Verse 39

After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.

From this comes the Israelite tradition

Когда же два месяца прошли, она вернулась к своему отцу, и он сделал с ней то, о чём поклялся. Она умерла девственницей.

Отсюда и происходит исраильский обычай,

Verse 40

that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

что каждый год молодые женщины Исраила выходят на четыре дня оплакивать дочь галаадитянина Иефтаха.
