Job 38

“Who is this that obscures my plans
    with words without knowledge?

– Кто ты, что Мой замысел омрачаешь
    словами, в которых нет знания?

Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.

Препояшь себя, как мужчина;
    Я буду спрашивать, а ты отвечай.

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.

Где ты был, когда Я землю утверждал?
    Если ты знаешь, то отвечай Мне.

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
    Who stretched a measuring line across it?

Кто определил ей предел? Конечно, ты знаешь!
    Кто протянул над ней мерную нить?

On what were its footings set,
    or who laid its cornerstone—

На чём покоится земное основание,
    и кто заложил её краеугольный камень,

while the morning stars sang together
    and all the angels^[a] shouted for joy?

когда вместе пели все звёзды утра,
    и ангелы^[a] ликовали от радости?

“Who shut up the sea behind doors
    when it burst forth from the womb,

Кто запер воротами море,
    когда оно исторглось, как из чрева,

when I made the clouds its garment
    and wrapped it in thick darkness,

когда сделал Я тучи его одеждой
    и обвил его пеленами мглы,

when I fixed limits for it
    and set its doors and bars in place,

когда Я назначил ему рубежи
    и поставил ему ворота с запорами,

when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
    here is where your proud waves halt’?

когда Я сказал: «До этого места дойдёшь, но не дальше;
    здесь предел для гордых твоих валов»?

“Have you ever given orders to the morning,
    or shown the dawn its place,

Случалось ли тебе приказывать утру
    и указывать место заре,

that it might take the earth by the edges
    and shake the wicked out of it?

чтобы она охватила края земли
    и стряхнула с неё злодеев?

The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
    its features stand out like those of a garment.

И земля обретает своё лицо, как глина под тяжестью печати,
    и расцвечивается, как риза^[b].

The wicked are denied their light,
    and their upraised arm is broken.

Но у злодеев отнят их свет,
    и поднятая рука их сломана.

“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
    or walked in the recesses of the deep?

Доходил ли ты до истоков моря
    и ступал ли по дну пучины?

Have the gates of death been shown to you?
    Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?

Открывались ли тебе двери смерти?
    Видел ли ты врата смертной мглы?

Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
    Tell me, if you know all this.

Обозрел ли ты широту земли?
    Скажи Мне, если всё это знаешь.

“What is the way to the abode of light?
    And where does darkness reside?

Где путь к обители света?
    Где пребывает тьма?

Can you take them to their places?
    Do you know the paths to their dwellings?

Ты, верно, в пределы её входил
    и знаешь путь к её дому?

Surely you know, for you were already born!
    You have lived so many years!

Конечно же знаешь, ведь ты тогда уже родился
    и прожил так много лет!

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
    or seen the storehouses of the hail,

Входил ли ты в кладовые снега
    и видел ли хранилища града?

which I reserve for times of trouble,
    for days of war and battle?

На смутное время Я их берегу,
    на дни войны и битвы.^[c]

What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
    or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?

По какому пути разливается свет,
    и мчится на землю восточный ветер?

Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
    and a path for the thunderstorm,

Кто устроил проток для ливня
    и путь проложил грозе,

to water a land where no one lives,
    an uninhabited desert,

чтобы землю безлюдную оросить,
    пустыню, где нет людей,

to satisfy a desolate wasteland
    and make it sprout with grass?

дикую степь напитать водой
    и взрастить из земли траву?

Does the rain have a father?
    Who fathers the drops of dew?

Есть ли отец у дождя?
    Кто капли росы рождает?

From whose womb comes the ice?
    Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens

Из чьей утробы выходит лёд?
    Кто на свет производит небесный иней,

when the waters become hard as stone,
    when the surface of the deep is frozen?

когда воды, как камень, крепнут,
    и твердеет лицо морей?

“Can you bind the chains^[b] of the Pleiades?
    Can you loosen Orion’s belt?

Властен ли ты затянуть узел Плеяд
    и развязать пояс Ориона?

Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons^[c]
    or lead out the Bear^[d] with its cubs?

Можешь ли ты созвездия вывести в срок
    и вести Большую Медведицу с её детёнышами?

Do you know the laws of the heavens?
    Can you set up God’s^[e] dominion over the earth?

Известны ли тебе уставы небес?
    Можешь ли ты их власть утвердить на земле?

“Can you raise your voice to the clouds
    and cover yourself with a flood of water?

Можешь ли ты возвысить свой голос к тучам,
    чтобы они дождь на тебя пролили?

Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
    Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?

Велишь ли ты молниям в путь пойти,
    скажут ли они тебе: «Мы готовы»?

Who gives the ibis wisdom^[f]
    or gives the rooster understanding?^[g]

Кто ибиса мудростью наделил?
    Кто дал разумение петуху?^[d]

Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
    Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens

Кто настолько мудр, чтобы сосчитать облака?
    Кто может сосуды небес опрокинуть,

when the dust becomes hard
    and the clods of earth stick together?

чтобы пыль превратилась в топь,
    и комья земли слиплись?

“Do you hunt the prey for the lioness
    and satisfy the hunger of the lions

Ты ли ловишь добычу львице
    и насыщаешь молодых львов,

when they crouch in their dens
    or lie in wait in a thicket?

когда они прячутся в своих логовах
    или лежат под кустом в засаде?

Who provides food for the raven
    when its young cry out to God
    and wander about for lack of food?
