Deuteronomy 19

When the Lord your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses,

Исраил, когда Вечный, твой Бог, истребит народы, землю которых Он отдаёт тебе, и когда ты прогонишь их и поселишься в их городах и домах,

then set aside for yourselves three cities in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

тогда отдели три города, расположенные посередине земли, которую Вечный, твой Бог, отдаёт тебе во владение.

Determine the distances involved and divide into three parts the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that a person who kills someone may flee for refuge to one of these cities.

Проложи к ним дороги и раздели на три части землю, которую Вечный, твой Бог, отдаёт тебе как наследие, чтобы всякий, кто убьёт кого-либо, мог туда убежать.

This is the rule concerning anyone who kills a person and flees there for safety—anyone who kills a neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought.

Вот правило о человеке, который совершит убийство и убежит туда, чтобы спасти свою жизнь, о всяком, кто убьёт человека неумышленно, не питая к убитому ненависти.

For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life.

Например, человек пойдёт в лес с кем-нибудь, чтобы нарубить дров. А когда он замахнётся на дерево топором, топор слетит с топорища, ударит другого и убьёт его. Такой человек может убежать в один из этих городов и спасти свою жизнь.

Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought.

Иначе, если расстояние слишком велико, мститель за кровь может погнаться за ним в гневе, настигнуть и убить. Хотя тот и не заслуживает смерти, потому что убил неумышленно, не питая к убитому ненависти.

This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities.

Вот почему я повелеваю тебе отделить три города.

If the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as he promised on oath to your ancestors, and gives you the whole land he promised them,

Когда Вечный, твой Бог, расширит твои владения, как Он клялся твоим предкам, и даст тебе всю землю, которую обещал им,

because you carefully follow all these laws I command you today—to love the Lord your God and to walk always in obedience to him—then you are to set aside three more cities.

если ты будешь прилежно следовать всем повелениям, которые я даю тебе сегодня, – любить Вечного, твоего Бога, и всегда ходить Его путями, – то выбери ещё три города.

Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.

Сделай это, чтобы в твоей земле, которую Вечный, твой Бог, даёт тебе в наследие, не проливалась невинная кровь, и чтобы ты не был виновным в кровопролитии.

But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor, and then flees to one of these cities,

Но если человек из ненависти к ближнему, устроит ему засаду, нападёт на него и убьёт, а потом убежит в один из этих городов,

the killer shall be sent for by the town elders, be brought back from the city, and be handed over to the avenger of blood to die.

то старейшины его города должны послать за ним, чтобы вернуть его из города-убежища и передать мстителю за кровь. И пусть он умрёт.

Show no pity. You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that it may go well with you.

Не жалей его. Ты должен искоренить в Исраиле грех пролития невинной крови, чтобы в дальнейшем у тебя всё было благополучно.

Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you receive in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

Witnesses

Не передвигай межу ближнего твоего, установленную твоими предшественниками в наследии, которое ты получил в земле, которую Вечный, твой Бог, отдаёт тебе во владение.

Свидетели

One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

Чтобы осудить человека, обвиняемого в каком бы то ни было преступлении или проступке, одного свидетеля недостаточно. Любое обвинение должно подтверждаться показаниями двух или трёх свидетелей.

If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse someone of a crime,

Если свидетель встанет, чтобы обвинить человека в преступлении,

the two people involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time.

то двое участников тяжбы должны предстать перед Вечным, священнослужителями и судьями, которые будут в те дни.

The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite,

Судьи должны тщательно расследовать дело, и если свидетель окажется лгуном, дающим ложное показание против своего брата,

then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party. You must purge the evil from among you.

то вы должны сделать с ним то, что он хотел сделать со своим братом. Вы должны искоренить зло из своей среды.

The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you.

Остальной народ услышит об этом и испугается, и впредь такое зло никогда не повторится.

Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Не поддавайся жалости: жизнь за жизнь, глаз за глаз, зуб за зуб, рука за руку, нога за ногу.
