And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.

The Philistines Capture the Ark

Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek.

И когда Шемуил говорил, весь Исраил слушал.

Филистимляне захватывают сундук соглашения

Исраильтяне выступили, чтобы сразиться с филистимлянами. Они расположились станом при Эвен-Езере, а филистимляне – при Афеке.

The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield.

Филистимляне выставили свои силы навстречу Исраилу, и в битве исраильтяне были разбиты филистимлянами, потеряв на поле сражения около четырёх тысяч человек.

When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”

Когда воины вернулись в стан, старейшины Исраила спросили:

– Почему Вечный отдал нас сегодня на поражение филистимлянам? Давайте принесём из Шило сундук соглашения, чтобы он^[a] был с нами и спас нас от руки врагов.

So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Народ послал в Шило несколько человек, и они принесли сундук соглашения Вечного, Повелителя Сил, Который восседает на херувимах^[b]. А двое сыновей Илия, Хофни и Пинхас, пришли вместе с людьми, нёсшими сундук Вечного.

When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook.

Когда сундук соглашения был доставлен в лагерь, все исраильтяне подняли такой громкий крик, что земля откликнулась эхом.

Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?”

When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp,

Услышав шум восклицаний, филистимляне спросили:

– Что значит этот крик в еврейском лагере?

Узнав, что в лагерь доставлен сундук Вечного,

the Philistines were afraid. “A god has^[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before.

филистимляне испугались.

– Боги пришли^[c] в их лагерь, – говорили они. – Мы попали в беду! Ничего подобного до сих пор не случалось.

We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

Горе нам! Кто избавит нас от руки этих могучих богов? Это же те боги, которые поразили^[d] египтян в пустыне всяческими наказаниями.

Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!”

Крепитесь, филистимляне! Мужайтесь, чтобы не быть рабами у евреев, как они были у вас. Будьте мужественными и сражайтесь!

So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.

Филистимляне сразились, и исраильтяне были разбиты, потерпев большое поражение. Все разбежались по своим шатрам. Исраил потерял в сражении тридцать тысяч пеших воинов.

The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Death of Eli

Сундук Аллаха был захвачен, а двое сыновей Илия, Хофни и Пинхас, погибли.

That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head.

В тот же самый день один вениамитянин бежал с места сражения и пришёл в Шило. Его одежды были разорваны, а голова покрыта пылью.^[e]

When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

Когда он пришёл, Илий сидел у обочины и смотрел на дорогу, потому что его сердце волновалось за сундук Аллаха. Когда человек вошёл в город и рассказал, что случилось, весь город поднял вопль.

Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”

The man hurried over to Eli,

Услышав это, Илий спросил:

– Что это за шум?

Вениамитянин поспешил прийти к Илию,

who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see.

которому было девяносто восемь лет и чьи глаза померкли настолько, что он не мог видеть.

He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”

Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”

Вениамитянин сказал Илию:

– Я только что с места сражения, я бежал оттуда сегодня.

Илий спросил:

– Что случилось, сын мой?

The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

Вестник ответил:

– Исраил бежал перед филистимлянами, войско понесло тяжёлые потери. Двое твоих сыновей, Хофни и Пинхас, мертвы, а сундук Аллаха захвачен.

When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led^[b] Israel forty years.

Когда он упомянул о сундуке Аллаха, Илий упал навзничь со своего сиденья у ворот. Он сломал себе шею и умер, потому что был стар и грузен. Он был судьёй^[f] в Исраиле сорок лет.

His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains.

Его невестка, жена Пинхаса, была тогда беременна и скоро должна была родить. Когда она услышала о том, что сундук Аллаха захвачен, а её свёкор и муж умерли, она согнулась от боли, потому что у неё начались схватки, и родила.

As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.

Когда она умирала, женщины, которые ухаживали за ней, говорили:

– Не бойся, ты родила сына.

Но она не отвечала и ни на кого не обращала внимания.

She named the boy Ichabod,^[c] saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.

Она назвала мальчика Ихавод («бесславный»), говоря: «Слава покинула Исраил», потому что сундук Аллаха был захвачен, а её свёкор и муж погибли.

She said, “The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

Она сказала:

– Слава покинула Исраил, потому что сундук Аллаха захвачен.
