1 Kings 18

After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”

So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.

Now the famine was severe in Samaria,

and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord.

и Ахав призвал Авдия, распорядителя его дворца.

While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)

Когда Иезевель истребляла пророков Вечного, Авдий спрятал сто пророков в двух пещерах – по пятьдесят в каждой – и снабжал их пищей и водой.)

Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”

So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.

As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”

– Ты ли это, Ильяс, мой господин?

“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”

– Я, – ответил он. – Иди, скажи хозяину: «Ильяс здесь».

“What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?

– Чем я согрешил, – спросил Авдий, – что ты отдаёшь твоего раба в руки Ахава на казнь?

As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.

Верно, как и то, что жив Вечный, твой Бог, – нет ни такого народа, ни царства, куда мой господин ни посылал бы искать тебя. И всякий раз, когда в том царстве или в народе говорили, что тебя там нет, он брал с них клятву, что они не смогли тебя отыскать.

But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’

А теперь ты говоришь: «Пойди, скажи хозяину, что Ильяс здесь».

I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth.

Я уйду от тебя, а Дух Вечного унесёт тебя, не знаю куда. Я приду и скажу Ахаву, он тебя не найдёт и убьёт меня. А я, твой раб, чту Вечного с юности.

Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.

Разве моему господину не рассказывали, что я сделал, когда Иезевель убивала пророков Вечного? Я спрятал сто пророков в двух пещерах, по пятьдесят в каждой, и снабжал их пищей и водой.

And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”

А теперь ты говоришь мне пойти к моему хозяину и сказать: «Ильяс здесь». Да он меня убьёт!

Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”

Elijah on Mount Carmel

Ильяс сказал:

– Верно, как и то, что жив Вечный, Повелитель Сил, – я непременно предстану сегодня перед Ахавом.

Ильяс и пророки Баала на горе Кармил

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Авдий отправился навстречу Ахаву и всё рассказал ему. Тогда Ахав пошёл навстречу Ильясу.

When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

Увидев его, он сказал:

– Это ты навёл беду на Исраил?

“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals.

– Не я навёл беду на Исраил, – ответил Ильяс, – а ты и дом твоего отца. Вы оставили повеления Вечного и пошли за статуями Баала.

Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

Пошли же людей и собери народ со всего Исраила ко мне на гору Кармил. И приведи четыреста пятьдесят пророков Баала и четыреста пророков Ашеры, которые едят со стола Иезевели.

So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

Ахав послал известить всех исраильтян и собрал пророков на гору Кармил.

Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

Ильяс вышел к народу и сказал:

– Сколько ещё вы будете пытаться усидеть на двух стульях? Если Вечный – это Бог, идите за Ним, а если Баал, то идите за ним.

Народ не отвечал ему ни слова.

Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.

Тогда Ильяс сказал им:

– Из пророков Вечного остался я один, а у Баала пророков – четыреста пятьдесят человек.

Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.

Пусть нам приведут двух быков. Затем пусть они выберут себе одного, разрежут его на куски и положат на дрова, но не поджигают их. Я подготовлю другого быка, положу его на дрова, но не подожгу их.

Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

И тогда вы призовёте имя вашего бога, а я призову имя Вечного. Бог, Который ответит огнём, и есть истинный Бог.

И весь народ сказал:

– Хорошо.

Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”

Ильяс сказал пророкам Баала:

– Выберите одного из двух быков и приготовьте его первыми, раз вас так много. Призывайте имя своего бога, но не зажигайте огня.

So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

Они взяли быка, которого им дали, и подготовили его. Они призывали имя Баала с утра до полудня.

– Баал, ответь нам! – кричали они.

Но отклика не было, никто не отвечал. И они скакали вокруг сделанного ими жертвенника.

At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”

В полдень Ильяс начал насмехаться над ними.

– Кричите громче! – говорил он. – Он же бог! Наверное, он задумался, или отошёл по нужде, или путешествует. А может быть, он спит, и его нужно разбудить.

So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

Они кричали громче и, по своему обычаю, резали себя мечами и копьями, пока не полилась кровь.

Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

Миновал полдень, а они продолжали неистовствовать до времени вечернего жертвоприношения^[a]. Но ни отклика, ни ответа, ни отзыва не было.

Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.

Тогда Ильяс сказал народу:

– Подойдите ко мне.

Они подошли к нему, и он восстановил разрушенный жертвенник Вечного.

Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”

Ильяс взял двенадцать камней – по числу родов, произошедших от Якуба, которому Вечный сказал: «Твоё имя будет Исраил».

With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs^[a] of seed.

Из этих камней он сложил жертвенник во имя Вечного и выкопал вокруг него ров вместимостью в пятнадцать литров^[b].

He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

Он разложил дрова, разрезал быка на части и положил его на дрова.

“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.

“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.

Затем он сказал:

– Наполните четыре больших кувшина водой и вылейте её на жертву всесожжения и на дрова.

– Повторите, – сказал он.

И они повторили.

– Сделайте это в третий раз, – сказал он.

И они сделали это в третий раз.

The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

Вода лилась вокруг жертвенника и даже наполнила ров.

At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.

Когда пришло время жертвоприношения, пророк Ильяс подошёл и сказал:

– Вечный, Бог Ибрахима, Исхака и Якуба^[c], пусть откроется сегодня, что Ты – Бог в Исраиле, а я – Твой раб и совершил всё это по Твоему слову!

Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

Ответь мне, Вечный, ответь мне, чтобы этот народ узнал, что Ты, Вечный, – Бог, и что Ты вновь обращаешь их сердца.

Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

Тогда сошёл огонь Вечного и пожрал жертву всесожжения, дрова, камни и почву, и поглотил воду во рву.

When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”

Увидев это, весь народ пал лицом на землю и закричал:

– Вечный есть Бог! Вечный есть Бог!

Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

А Ильяс приказал им:

– Схватите пророков Баала! Смотрите, чтобы ни один не скрылся!

Они схватили их, а Ильяс отвёл их к реке Кишону и там предал их смерти.^[d]

And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”

Ильяс сказал Ахаву:

– Иди, ешь и пей, потому что вот он, шум ливня!

So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.

И Ахав пошёл есть и пить, а Ильяс поднялся на вершину Кармила, опустился на корточки и положил своё лицо между колен.

“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.

“There is nothing there,” he said.

Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

– Пойди, посмотри в сторону моря, – сказал он слуге.

Тот пошёл и посмотрел.

– Ничего нет, – сказал он.

Семь раз Ильяс говорил: «Иди снова».

The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”

So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”

На седьмой раз слуга сказал:

– С моря поднимается облако, размером не больше ладони.

Ильяс сказал:

– Пойди и скажи Ахаву: «Запрягай колесницу и поезжай, чтобы тебя не застал дождь».

Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

Тем временем небо потемнело от облаков, поднялся ветер, начался сильный ливень, и Ахав поехал в город Изреель.

The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

А на Ильяса сошла сила Вечного, и, заправив плащ под пояс, он бежал всю дорогу до Изрееля перед Ахавом.
