These are the nations the Lord left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan

the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath.

They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

They took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

Othniel

The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

Исраильтяне совершили в глазах Вечного зло: они забыли Вечного, своего Бога, и служили статуям Баала и Ашеры^[b].

The anger of the Lord burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim,^[a] to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.

Гнев Вечного вспыхнул на Исраил, и Он отдал его в руки Кушан-Ришатаима, царя Месопотамии^[c], и исраильтяне служили ему восемь лет.

But when they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them.

Но когда они воззвали к Вечному, Он дал им избавителя, Отниила, сына Кеназа, младшего брата Халева, который спас их.

The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge^[b] and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.

Дух Вечного сошёл на него, он стал судьёй Исраила и отправился воевать. Вечный отдал Кушан-Ришатаима, царя Месопотамии^[d], в руки Отниила, который одержал над ним победу.

So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

И земля покоилась в мире сорок лет, пока Отниил, сын Кеназа, не умер.

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel.

Исраильтяне вновь совершили в глазах Вечного зло, и из-за этого Вечный сделал Эглона, царя Моава, сильнее Исраила.

Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.^[c]

В союзе с аммонитянами и аморреями Эглон нанёс Исраилу поражение и завладел городом Иерихоном.

The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.

Исраильтяне служили Эглону, царю Моава, восемнадцать лет.

Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

Они вновь воззвали к Вечному, и Он дал им избавителя – Ехуда, левшу, сына вениамитянина Геры. Исраильтяне послали его с данью к Эглону, царю Моава.

Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a cubit^[d] long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.

А Ехуд сделал обоюдоострый меч, длиной в полметра^[e], и укрепил его под одеждой у правого бедра.

He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.

Затем он принёс дань Эглону, царю Моава, который был очень полным.

After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it.

После того как Ехуд поднёс дань, он отпустил людей, которые её несли.

But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.”

The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.

Но сам он повернул назад у каменных статуй, что близ Гилгала, и сказал:

– О царь, у меня есть для тебя тайная весть!

Царь сказал:

– Тише! – и все его слуги удалились.

Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace^[e] and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose from his seat,

Ехуд приблизился к нему (а тот сидел один в верхней комнате своего летнего дворца) и сказал:

– У меня для тебя весть от Всевышнего.

Когда царь поднялся,

Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly.

Ехуд протянул левую руку, выхватил меч, который был у него на правом бедре, и вонзил царю в живот.

Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it.

Даже рукоять ушла вслед за лезвием, и жир закрыл весь меч. Ехуд не вытащил меча и покинул комнату^[f].

Then Ehud went out to the porch^[f]; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

Выйдя в переднюю, Ехуд закрыл за собой двери верхней комнаты и запер их.

After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the palace.”

Когда он ушёл, слуги обнаружили двери верхней комнаты запертыми. Они сказали: «Должно быть, он справляет нужду во внутренней комнате дома».

They waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.

Они ждали, пока не начали беспокоиться, и видя, что никто не отпирает дверей комнаты, взяли ключ и отперли их. Там слуги увидели, что их господин лежит на полу мёртвый.

While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah.

Пока они медлили, Ехуд скрылся. Он прошёл мимо идолов и спасся в Сеире.

When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.

Придя туда, он затрубил в рог в нагорьях Ефраима, и исраильтяне спустились вместе с ним с нагорий. Ехуд возглавил их.

“Follow me,” he ordered, “for the Lord has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands.” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over.

– Идите за мной, – приказал он, – потому что Вечный отдал моавитян, ваших врагов, в ваши руки.

И они пошли за ним, захватили броды у реки Иордана, которые вели к Моаву, и не позволяли никому переправляться.

At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped.

Они сразили около десяти тысяч моавитян, всех сильных, крепких воинов; скрыться не удалось никому.

That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years.

Shamgar

В тот день Моав стал служить Исраилу, и земля покоилась в мире восемьдесят лет.

Шамгар

After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.

После Ехуды пришёл Шамгар, сын Аната, который сразил шестьсот филистимлян пастушьей тростью. Он также спас Исраил.
