Job 1

In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

В земле Уц жил человек по имени Аюб. Этот человек был непорочен и праведен, жил в страхе перед Всевышним и сторонился зла.

He had seven sons and three daughters,

У него было семеро сыновей и три дочери.

and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

Он владел семью тысячами овец, тремя тысячами верблюдов, пятьюстами парами волов и пятьюстами ослицами, а ещё великим множеством слуг. Он был самым знатным и самым уважаемым человеком среди всех жителей Востока.

His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Его сыновья сходились, чтобы пировать по очереди в домах друг у друга, и приглашали трёх своих сестёр, чтобы есть и пить вместе с ними.

When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

Когда время пиров истекало, Аюб посылал за ними и совершал ритуал очищения. Рано утром он возносил за каждого из них всесожжение, думая: «Быть может, мои сыновья согрешили и в сердце своём оскорбили Всевышнего». Так Аюб поступал постоянно.

Сатана клевещет на Аюба

One day the angels^[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan^[b] also came with them.

Однажды ангелы^[a] пришли, чтобы предстать перед Вечным^[b], и с ними пришёл сатана^[c].

The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

Вечный спросил сатану:

– Откуда ты пришёл?

Сатана ответил Вечному:

– Я скитался по земле и обошёл её всю.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

Вечный сказал сатане:

– Приметил ли ты Моего раба Аюба? Нет на земле такого человека, как он: непорочного и праведного, кто живёт в страхе перед Всевышним и сторонится зла.

“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied.

– Разве даром Аюб боится Всевышнего? – ответил Вечному сатана. –

“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

Разве не Ты оградил его самого, его домашних и всё его добро? Ты благословил дело его рук, и его стада и отары заполонили землю.

But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

Но протяни руку и порази всё, что у него есть, и он проклянёт Тебя прямо в лицо.

The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Вечный сказал сатане:

– Хорошо. Всё, что у него есть, в твоих руках, но на него самого руки не поднимай.

И сатана ушёл от Вечного.

Первое испытание Аюба

One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,

Однажды, когда сыновья и дочери Аюба пировали и пили вино в доме у старшего из братьев,

a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

к Аюбу пришёл вестник и сказал:

and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

– Волы пахали и ослицы паслись неподалёку, когда напали севеяне и угнали их. Они предали всех слуг мечу, и я – единственный, кто спасся, чтобы рассказать тебе об этом!

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

Он ещё говорил, когда пришёл другой вестник и сказал:

– Огонь Всевышнего пал с небес и сжёг овец и слуг, и я – единственный, кто спасся, чтобы рассказать тебе об этом!

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

Он ещё говорил, когда пришёл третий вестник и сказал:

– Халдеи собрались в три отряда, набросились на стадо твоих верблюдов и угнали их. Они предали всех слуг мечу, и я – единственный, кто спасся, чтобы рассказать тебе об этом!

While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,

Он ещё говорил, когда пришёл ещё один вестник и сказал:

– Твои сыновья и дочери пировали и пили вино в доме у старшего брата,

when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

как вдруг страшный вихрь примчался из пустыни и сотряс дом. Дом рухнул на них, и все они погибли, а я – единственный, кто спасся, чтобы рассказать тебе об этом.

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship

Тогда Аюб встал и в скорби разорвал на себе одежду и обрил голову. Он поклонился, пав лицом на землю,

and said:

и сказал:

In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Во всём этом Аюб не согрешил и не обвинил Всевышнего в несправедливости к нему.
