Genesis 42

When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”

Когда Якуб узнал, что в Египте есть зерно, он сказал сыновьям:

– Что вы смотрите друг на друга?

He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”

И продолжил:

– Я слышал, что в Египте есть зерно. Идите и купите его там для нас, чтобы мы выжили и не погибли.

Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

Десять братьев Юсуфа отправились в Египет, чтобы купить зерна,

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.

но Вениамина, брата Юсуфа, Якуб не отпустил с остальными, потому что боялся, как бы с ним не случилось беды.

So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.

Так среди многих других и сыновья Исраила пришли покупать зерно, потому что в земле Ханаана был голод.

Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the person who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

Юсуф правил всей страной; он и продавал зерно народу по всему Египту, и когда братья Юсуфа пришли, они поклонились ему лицом до земли.

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

Как только Юсуф увидел братьев, он сразу узнал их, но притворился незнакомцем и заговорил с ними сурово.

– Откуда вы пришли? – спросил он.

– Из земли Ханаана, чтобы купить еды, – ответили они.

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

Юсуф узнал своих братьев, но они не узнали его.

Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

Он вспомнил свои сны про них и сказал:

– Вы шпионы! Вы пришли высмотреть уязвимые места в нашей земле.

“No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.

– Что ты, господин, – ответили они, – твои рабы пришли купить еды.

We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”

Мы все сыновья одного отца. Твои рабы честные люди, не шпионы.

“No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”

Он сказал им:

– Нет, вы пришли высмотреть, где в нашей земле уязвимые места.

But they replied, “Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

Но они ответили:

– Рабов твоих было двенадцать братьев, сыновей одного отца, который живёт в земле Ханаана. Младший и сейчас с отцом, а одного больше нет.

Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!

Юсуф сказал им:

– Я же сказал, что вы – шпионы!

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.

И вот как я вас проверю: клянусь жизнью фараона, вы не уйдёте отсюда, пока не придёт сюда ваш младший брат.

Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”

Пошлите одного из вас за братом, а остальные будут сидеть в темнице. Так я проверю ваши слова – правду ли вы мне говорите. Если нет, то верно, как и то, что жив фараон, – вы шпионы!

And he put them all in custody for three days.

И он отдал их всех под стражу на три дня.

On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

На третий день Юсуф сказал им:

– Сделайте, что я скажу, и будете жить, потому что я боюсь Всевышнего.

If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.

Если вы честные люди, пусть один из вас останется здесь в темнице, а остальные пойдут и отнесут зерно вашим голодающим семьям.

But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

Но вы должны привести ко мне вашего младшего брата, чтобы ваши слова подтвердились, и вы остались в живых.

Так они и сделали.

They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”

Они сказали друг другу:

– Ясно, что мы терпим наказание за нашего брата. Мы видели его отчаяние, когда он умолял нас, но мы не стали слушать, и вот нас постигла эта беда.

Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”

Рувим ответил:

– Я же говорил вам – не грешите против мальчика, но вы не послушали! Теперь наступает расплата за его кровь.

They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.

Они и не думали, что Юсуф понимает их, потому что он говорил с ними через переводчика.

He turned away from them and began to weep, but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

Он отвернулся от них и заплакал, потом снова повернулся и заговорил с ними. Он взял от них Шимона и связал его у них на глазах.

Возвращение в Ханаан

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,

Юсуф приказал наполнить их сумки зерном, положить серебро каждого из них обратно ему в мешок и дать им запасов на дорогу; так и было исполнено.

they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

Они погрузили зерно на ослов и отправились в путь.

At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.

Когда они остановились на ночлег, один из них развязал мешок, чтобы взять корм для осла, и увидел в отверстии мешка своё серебро.

“My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

– Моё серебро вернулось! – сказал он братьям. – Вот оно, в моём мешке.

Сердце у них замерло; они в страхе повернулись друг к другу и сказали:

– Что это сделал с нами Всевышний?

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said,

Придя к своему отцу Якубу в землю Ханаана, они рассказали ему обо всём, что с ними случилось. Они сказали:

“The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.

– Человек, который правит той землёй, говорил с нами сурово и принял нас за шпионов.

But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.

Но мы сказали ему: «Мы честные люди, не шпионы.

We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’

Нас было двенадцать братьев, сыновей одного отца. Одного больше нет, а младший сейчас с отцом в Ханаане».

“Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.

Тогда человек, который правит той землёй, сказал нам: «Вот как я узнаю, честные вы люди или нет: оставьте одного брата здесь со мной, возьмите еды для ваших голодающих семей и идите своей дорогой;

But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade^[a] in the land.’”

но приведите ко мне вашего младшего брата – так я узнаю, что вы не шпионы, а честные люди. Тогда я отдам вам вашего брата и позволю торговать^[a] в этой земле».

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.

Разбирая мешки, каждый обнаружил там свой узелок с серебром. Увидев серебро, и они, и их отец испугались.

Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

Якуб сказал им:

– Вы лишили меня детей. Юсуфа больше нет, и Шимона больше нет, а теперь вы хотите взять Вениамина. Всё обернулось против меня!

Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

Рувим сказал отцу:

– Предай смерти обоих моих сыновей, если я не приведу его назад к тебе. Поручи его моей заботе, и я приведу его обратно.

But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

Но Якуб ответил:

– Мой сын не пойдёт туда с тобой; его родной брат мёртв, из детей Рахили он остался один. Если в пути с ним случится беда, то этой скорбью вы сведёте мою седую голову в могилу^[b].
